  • This video is about the ancient art of servicing the sort of wooden block that have formed the core of traditional rigs for centuries. There's a cracking yarn too about where this particular block came from.

55 comments, Tom Leaves a legacy. I hunger for a simple real life. Truly I say, this is absolutely beautiful, life today is absolutely polluted, I relish everyone of your videos Tom. Your turn of phrase, attitude, understanding of life, you certainly are a wise man and one to watch. I hope I can attain a worthy level of seamanship and help rescue my children from this sick world in which land lovers suffer

Tom is most certainly a highly competent sailor but he’s also an absolutely fantastic presenter. He’s the whole 9 yards wrapped up into one. They don’t get any better than that. He’s probably the best. This is good stuff.

Another great upload Tom. True about the comments by passers by when you own a wooden yacht. Most are terrified by the prospect of upkeep we gain hours of pleasure from 🤣

Speaking as someone from North Yorkshire, Stokesley, that job is a good’un .
How did you....... but that’s another story.
Downs Road Boatyard is making new blocks for Thames Barges and one Cutty Sark. They did the re-rigging post fire and relaid the forpeack .
Nice to see the quality in your life.

    That was lovely. Irreplaceable.
Two chats I'd like to suggest....
1.What's in your pockets or on your belt when you sail? Knives, multi-tools etc. Stuff you'd take on a passage on another boat.
Bet this will spur some yarn digressions.
2.your views on sandwiched hulls. Would you buy one from the 80s or a newish version or steer clear completely.... and why?

Block and tackle while in the Navy as a backup to the electric chain fall for the accommodation ladder we had a 6 to 1 block and tackle with 1 inch nylon to raise the ladder if the chain fall ever crapped out. Once the ladder was down we would remove the electric chain fall and put up the nicely oiled block and tackle. A lot of people really like the look of it. We also used to bring drunken sailors to the main deck.

With a 67 year old sailboat, I constantly get the same "Must be a lot of work..." comment. When did society de-value work? What incredible things are people achieving with all their 'labor saving' devices? Ah well, time to get back to my off-season boat work. Cheers.

Nearly right Ryan. Actually it's a T140 750cc '70s Bonnie. Blew out when I was going for the ton! The other gasket with a hole in is my 1949 4litre Bentley. Don't ask how that happened Mate!

Tom never short sell yourself, your priceless, your testimony with Ros proves that. You may find this channel interesting, friendly jordies, No he doesn't sail, knows nothing about boats, but I think you'll see a bit of grit in him. A young man who has turned into a consumer, if only all of humanity could experience the sea

As long as it is liquid, it goes back into the cleaning diesel jar, with a tap 3 cm above the bottom. And no, nothing works better, that does not harm the metal parts.
