  • With David Hyman, Israeli professional tour guide. Haifa is Israel's third largest city with close to 300K residents living in many neigborhoods on the slopes of Biblical mount Carmel. Our tour today is to one of the oldest districts, Hadar Ha Carmel. The founders of Hadar purchased land on the ledge above the Haifa port, and planned a modern "Garden City" around the fist university of the country - the Technion. Hadar was an immediate success story, the combination of the port, the train station, the refinery, offered many jobs. The excellent schools both high school and elementary, offered education to all. Commerce was thriving with vendors, shops, boutiques. Cultural events took place in the theatres, and cinemas. Everything was happening in Hadar. It is hard to pinpoint the beginning of the decline, probably in the early 80s, with the building of the first malls. Hadar lost the commerce to the malls, the cinemas also moved out of the city, the stronger population moved up the mountain to the Carmel region and the schools followed. in the 90's the government buildings and court houses moved down to the city near the port. In 20 years, Hadar was drained from all it's assets and declined in to poverty, neglect and crime. Chaneg started a few years ago, when young people were attracted to the low rent options and started to move back to Hadar. Things are picking up in a slow pace, new energy can be felt on certain streets. My video is an effort to capture this new vibe.
