I spent most of this winter in a completely uninsulated van. Granted, temps in my area usually don't drop much below 4C, but, with a good sleeping bag, it's managable. Only reason I'd need insulation is for road noise during those times I'm "forced" to sleep on a relatively busy street (rather not wear earplugs).
You might want to consider wearing external ear protection. It limits your sleeping positions a bit, but it's more comfortable and easier to take on and off than earplugs. I find i t's usually better than trying to sleep with sound in the background.
Thanks for these handy dandy videos. With the deadening on the floor, how do you then fix batten down to take the ply floor? I want to avoid screwing into the base and have seen battens glued directly to metal body but if it has the deadening over will I be able to effectively adhesive the batten onto the foil back sound insulation? Cheers
Wow brilliant there's so much information on insulation and a lot of it conflicting, you've nailed it and given me inspiration by way of knowledge on how to do it right
Hi! Great video, very useful! I was wondering if you had any experience on using Armaflex vs Dodomat, and if so, what made you use Dodomat over Armaflex? Considering using about the same thickness.. Cheers!
I've found that the sound deadening works great, but I abide by the 25% rule; after that it decreases the decibel level but it does not actually deaden the van any further. After the 25% I move over to sound insulating foam - it's lighter, does not deaden but that is already achieved - and decreases the db levels.
Thank you so much! What do you put over the Thermo Fleece as the final layer? Don't you need a moisture barrier? Or do you just place the cladding onto the Thermo Fleece?
Thanks so much for this video. I’ve basically done so much research that I’ve totally lost what order and what product I need and what order to use them! I pick up my van this week and so I feel like this channel might just be the reason I won’t freeze at night! What’s the minimum coverage of the dodo sound deadening. Some people say 30% - 50% but it looks like you’re using as much as you can on the outside wall? Thanks again!
Thank you very much, Ive just started looking into buying a van to convert , With the way you show how to do things is a massive help it has gave me a confidence boost to go ahead. I will be using your links to get materials. kind regards..
My dodo mat just arrived, first vid I watched on application, the guy said you shouldn't use it on the wheel arches, but use a foam based product to actually absorb the sound instead. Everyone else seems to be using it though. Thoughts?
About to deaden/insulate aT5 as a day van. From other videos it seems you are better using a roller to guarantee the Silent Coat is fully bonded to the panels instead of just using hand pressure. Certainly any vehicles I have done in the past I have used a roller. Very informative series of videos, thanks, have subscribed.
Thank you for your kind words. We have used rollers in the past and still do for tricky areas but the adhesive is so good on the silent coat it really isn't necessary.
I watched another youtube video recently and the guy was using your products but used them in the order of Silent Coat, Thermo Fleece and finally Thermo Liner. I believe his theory was that the Thermo liner was best used as the final layer to act as a vapour/moisture barrier to the Thermo Fleece. He also covered the ENTIRE walls in it. Would you recommend this?
Yes thats what I was thinking one should do as well. As most videos include a vapor seal with the reflective material towards inside of the van. I wish you could have mentioned what YT video so as I could view this other method too. Good comment.
i have to agree. I think its good advice to put the moisture barrier as the most inner layer to stop moisture from reaching your insulating layers. This will stop the moisture reaching the outer/colder layers where it would condense and cause water in the bottom the cavity - basically avoiding what he said at the start if the video. i can't understand why these professionals don't follow basic principles for this.
@@athertop So what happens when you get moisture behind the vapour barrier which I believe would be bound to occur at some point however well you think you have done it. It would be trapped and have nowhere to go and rot your van. Ventilation is the key to keeping moisture from condensing and trying to seal a van up is counterproductive. think these videos are really professional and make practical sense but at the end of the day its your vehicle and your choice but just because someone has a different opinion it doesn't make it invalid or unprofessional.
Practical informative video, thanks. I have been hearing great things about the properties of real wool insulation ie, mould suppression, R values and off gassing. Any thoughts.
excellent vid! I have one question, if I may. I really don't want to carpet the interior of my van, what else do you recommend? And don't say woodchip......
Just done the back of my Proace van with 2 x30 boxes of the deadener , doors shut like a roller now , think i will just stuff in the recycled Thermo fleese in now should be better than before also i just carpeted the stock ply panels much nicer inside now so i can use it as a camper as well as work.
Once you add the fiber insulation to the back of the foil you remove it’s radiant properties making it useless except as a vapor barrier. Best to use foam spray and you can spray into cavities. You can’t beat foam for sound and thermal insulation. Check out the costs too.
finally a good video for insulation. I cringe so much when people use Earthwool/fiberglass? Or whatever they use which is dusty as hell and bad for moisture.

Great helpful vid. Just a question. With doing the floor, would you place any sound deadening/ insulation down first and place batons on top, or batons first then sound deadening/ insulation in the gaps to then place floor on top? Thanks
Just a heads up I put insulation in my van that didn't have any, I had carpeted walls. Added insulation for the summer and all it did was change the time the van is hot. Its complete pointless if you are not in very cold areas and as someone who's running a 1500WH battery I'm already avoiding cold climates since I have no real decent way of charging back up with solar.
greats videos. really helping me alot for my upcoming build. my only question is for the bits of metal still showing should i be putting thermal on there then lining carpet on top of it?
Great video! In process on doing my first van now. Just a quick question. Would you just put silent coat sound deadener on ceiling or something on top of it before you carpet it? Thanks
Hi Guys, thanks a lot for sharing the info. I am about to insulate the floor of my T5. I'd like to keep using the origianal floor (it is the soft one, like the one in this video). I was thinking to apply the thermal van liner 7mm directly to the floor and put back the original floor on. My doubts: 1) is this thermal liner compressable since the floor is not rigid? 2) does the original floor will fit back? thankssss
What's the advantage to putting in thermo van liner and then fleece, vs just putting in some fleece/rock wool/mineral wool? I'm guessing it's *additional* sound proofing? but maybe there's some advantage with the closed cell foam?
Hi Robin. The thermo van liner does two jobs as you say. It serves as a great sound barrier (external noise) and sound deadener (panel resonance) as well and thermal properties with the closed cell foam.
Great video i just purchased a t4 would this still work on it and how much would i need as im new to the world of vw transporters never done any think like this before
Brilliant video, quick question though do you put a plastic barrier on after the fleece and before the cards? I'm doing my T25 up and the old insulation had clear plastic between the insulation layer and door cards.
Hello 👋 love the insulation! I want to do exactly the same in my van but I would like to carpet line. Straight on top! Would this work? Also taking in consideration I want to try and carpet line straight on top do I need another vapour barrier on top? Say just some of that bubble wrap stuff? Any help is greatly appreciated! I know you must be super busy! 😊
I'm confused with the self stick insulation. I can understand it with the deadening but with the insulation don't you need to have a vapor barrier between the insulation and the metal of the van?
Good vid cheers Quick one...How much pressure do you need to apply with the roller on sound deadening mats ,,, a quick rligjt oll over or really pressing down with force to ensure it sticks?
Hi 1st off brilliant video!!! I'm just starting a vw crafter and bought 2 of 1mtr x10m 7mm rolls of insulation to start putting on the panels, I'm a novice so can't tell you what brand. On your video you put a 2nd layer of sound insulation in and then the foam stuff. I'v already got this stuff for the 1st layer so may aswell use it but can you recommend which self adhesive soundproofing to use for the 2nd layer and what foam gear used. Regards Christopher
Hi Martin, thanks for your question. I have used lots of different products in the past from different suppliers and found this combination to be most effective for my customers vehicles.
Great video as always! How does this stuff weigh up against the 7mm thermoliner supplied by Harrison trim? You've use two sheets of insulation and soundproofing and then the plastic roll, i think the stuff from HT is 2 in 1? Acoustic and insulation. Cheers.
HT insulation in open cell foam and is susceptible to soaking up moisture. Dodo products are closed cell foam (water resistant) high adhesive and tested/certified fire proof. We use two layers of insulation and foam as there is more than one type of vibration in a moving vehicle, for example road noise vibration and mechanical noise vibration. Having two layers reduces noise levels for more types of vibration.
I’ve fitted the same insulation materials as you and made a great job, van does feel warmer even without heating but driving around it has made it very comfortable. Thank You However, I do have one question if you don’t mind please. Do you think it is necessary to fit some form of vapour barrier over the sides and roof before fitting ply? I’ve seen so much on the Internet advocating both with and without. Thanks
Excellent video love the channel mate very helpful and insightful and makes my mind up which way to go for my insulation just got to find the van 1st 😂... Do You need the foil bubble wrap over the top as I see so many use?
I bought the materials recommended but obviously didn't Co er panels enough as I have loads left over. Must have seen too many videos of small squares rather than almost the full panels being covered. Should I go back and cut lots of little pieces to add more coverage before I add the other layers? I know Combe valley don't usually reply so happy to get opinion from anyone. Really want to do second layer asap
Hi Finn, thanks for the comments. Yes we would advise full coverage, however any thing you place on the panels, over and above what was supplied from the factory, is better than nothing :)
Hi, I want to sound proof and insulate my T6 SWB and wanted to know how much of each product i need, Want to do the floor, sides and roof, great video...
Good job. Question - is this style of insulation and sound proofing as good or better than using a wood frame and paneling which seems a waste of space inside the van.
This may be a long shot and sound totally bonkers but here goes. I hear every single thing my upstairs neighbors do. They are lovely people. Not partying ,, very considerate. Its the building that's the problem. If there was ever any sound proofing in the my ceiling or their floor, It's now gone. Could i use Sound Coat on my ceiling to block out some of the noise?
Folks I don't think you need to cover a whole panel with sound deadening materials, a square patch or 2 is sufficient for it to do it's job, it's both heavy and expensive and you really only need it on large vans and panels.
Agreed, it only to reduces resonance by adding weight to the panel. I also can't really see most wheel arches or floors being worth sound deadening at all. They are heavy gauge metal with usually almost no large flat areas to resonate. Sure it may help a bit but nowhere near as much as as it does on the exterior panels.
Hello, the 6mm is sufficient for the most weather? I see a lot doing some 19mm, why is that? greetings. Nice vieuw with the dodo thermal fleece. Thank you.
hi @ Combe Vally Campers just about to invest in a T5.1 and will be carrying out sound deadening and insulation and carpet lining ! great videos by the way makes doing a conversion less daunting ! just wondering who much of the silent coat do you need to do a SWB T5 ? and do you just need one 10m roll of the thermo van liner ?
Quick question. Is it worth / necessary to put on the first two layers, given that they both have sound deadening qualities? Would the second layer be enough on it's own to deal with the sound? Also, is there a product that deals with both the sound deadening and total thermal insulation in one? Many thanks.
Really silly question but when sound proofing rhe floor do you just put the silent coat and insulation layer inbetween the raised bits or just cover the whole floor?
You don’t need to sound deaden the floor. If its got corrugations that provides rigidity and therefore tempers vibration and is sound deadened anyway. You only need to sound deaden large panels Think of old cars; at certain speeds the whole bonnet would resonate.

In the remaining (internal) metal, carpet is fine
Great video! In process on doing my first van now. Just a quick question. Would you just put silent coat sound deadener on ceiling or something on top of it before you carpet it? Thanks
Love video. Only criticism might be that the music is quite a bit louder than verbal.
Thanks for this video, I'm camperizing my practically new Ford Transit Custom and I will surely order this to insulate my baby.
Thanks Bruno, don't forget to check out our other vids
Hello 👋 love the insulation! I want to do exactly the same in my van but I would like to carpet line. Straight on top! Would this work? Also taking in consideration I want to try and carpet line straight on top do I need another vapour barrier on top? Say just some of that bubble wrap stuff? Any help is greatly appreciated! I know you must be super busy! 😊
I'm confused with the self stick insulation. I can understand it with the deadening but with the insulation don't you need to have a vapor barrier between the insulation and the metal of the van?
Good vid cheers
Quick one...How much pressure do you need to apply with the roller on sound deadening mats ,,, a quick rligjt oll over or really pressing down with force to ensure it sticks?
Those mats are cool. Thanks for the video. I plan on using a roll on sound dampener myself.
Great video thanks. Do you know rough how much weight this adds to the van. Cheers
Sup! Thanks for the video! One question, I noticed the roof had done in strips.. any reason? Cheers!
Have you used the Dodo Dead Mat as an alternative to Silent Coat?
I noticed it's a bit cheaper and slightly thinner.
Im away to convert my newly purchased bongo, on my own, as a perfectionist on a very tight budget... should be interesting 😅
Best of luck!!!
Hi There, Great video. Thanks for the help. Do you put the Woolley stuff on the roof too.
I was wondering if there was enough room?
Thanks
Generally no
I’ve fitted the same insulation materials as you and made a great job, van does feel warmer even without heating but driving around it has made it very comfortable. Thank You
However, I do have one question if you don’t mind please.
Do you think it is necessary to fit some form of vapour barrier over the sides and roof before fitting ply? I’ve seen so much on the Internet advocating both with and without.
Thanks
That's awesome! It makes a huge amount of difference to living in and driving the van. Leigh
I like the spartan look without applying carpet.
Excellent video love the channel mate very helpful and insightful and makes my mind up which way to go for my insulation just got to find the van 1st 😂... Do You need the foil bubble wrap over the top as I see so many use?
Did you manage to find out mate?
@@joshuatimmins2681 no mate didn’t find out think it’s down to Personel preference
is it better to stick the thinner material on the roof to save space or is it ok to go for the larger stuff?
Best vid online for explaining this! Cheers mate!
So can you clad straight over the liner? No need for any more insulation?
Hi, I want to sound proof and insulate my T6 SWB and wanted to know how much of each product i need, Want to do the floor, sides and roof, great video...
Great video, would love to see the next step carpet lining this particular van, thanks
Good job. Question - is this style of insulation and sound proofing as good or better than using a wood frame and paneling which seems a waste of space inside the van.
I'd think the wood frame gives you the basis to fit your cladding, cupboard etc.. rather than something to fit your insulation into.
Did u give the sound coat a go ?,We were renting a ground floor flat with no insulation between the floors was a nightmare,
@@davec1704 Hi Dave! I'm waiting to see if they are moving out. They hinted they might. Then I will approach the landlord with the problem.
Great informative video, this has now given us the confidence to go out there and do it ourselves on our recently purchased Day van. Thanks
You only need to sound deaden large panels
Think of old cars; at certain speeds the whole bonnet would resonate.
