At first I found the drunk mom book funny but then realised children's books are a powerful tool and can help their emotional development. It's a book to help children with alcoholic parents who can't relate to normal stories of normal parents and used in therapy. I think the authors intention to help these kids is really great and it makes me sad.

alcoholism isn't funny. especially for a child who depends on his/her mother. if only he could have added a serious tone before he through the book down about alanon or other ways of helping people in that situation. i guess he found it funny since his mother isn't a alcoholic.

well yeah, when it clicked in my brain that it wasnt about us just drinking to avoid a bit of stress, but about real alcoholism I didn't find it funny. I think I explained why it was sad pretty clearly

As someone in recovery, I thank God I don't have kids. I have done things while drinking that are so much worse than the mom in this story. I have met many people who's parents drank when they grew up while on my recovery journey and most are still hurting.

The drunk mom book is a therapy book. When I worked as a children's counsellor at a shelter for abused women & children, we had a lot of those books (that exact one, maybe). They were just used as ways for counsellors to approach difficult subjects with children that the children are already dealing with at home. So there were ones about Daddy hitting Mommy, or ones about being homeless, etc. They're just for a very, very specific market, not for bedtime reading!

I think this book would have helped me realizing that there are kids out there that go through the same stuff as I did...

    • @CedarwoodFair

I laughed somewhat tentatively, I guess because it was sort of absurd and out of place. But as someone whose parents really did drink too much sometimes when I was a kid, I did feel pretty sad and uncomfortable at the same time. When I really think about that cake story, it's pretty fucking heartbreaking. Everyone laughing, hiding something really quite destructive. It's like a nightmare, really. I actually thought the illustration captured that super well too.
That's not to say that they shouldn't have had the book on the show or anything. Such is life. It's nice to laugh about dark stuff sometimes. But I do think there was a bit of flippancy there in the way it was handled on the show.
Anyway, it's nice to know there's a book about it, actually, because I didn't even fully appreciate that alcohol/drugs were a big factor in the way my parents acted sometimes until I was much older. I hope it helps some kids, and I know there are plenty out there who have it far worse than I ever did. Sad stuff.

a kid growing up with an alcoholic parent is not something to joke about. it's a very scarring and embarrassing thing that a lot of kids go through. some don't even know it's not a normal thing that parents do until it's too late. that book could help a kid understand that what their parent does isn't normal and that they should talk to someone about it. i know that it would have really helped me when i was younger.

I saw that mom book in school. It was for children living with an alcoholic parent. The child was blameless and had mixed emotions, so it's okay for you to be sad, angry or embarrassed. It also helps teachers identify children who need different supports.
At first glance it's weird to see that title on a children's book, but it's not a Good Night Spoon type of book.

Actually the part where they make fun of the science book is a bit sad to me. As long as the experiments are actually safe (while performed under adult supervision of course), why would you not want your kids to learn firsthand about science?

Ammonium chloride is delicious actually. It's a major component of candy in parts of Europe. Its common name is "salmiak", short for "sal ammoniac".
If "ammonium chloride" sounds scary, consider that table salt is "sodium chloride" :)

Yeah, but it isn't as colloquial. Most people may not even know that there is a difference between ammonia and ammonium.

The drunk mom book is alllll too real for me and really wasn't that hilarious. My mom was a sloppy mess my entire childhood and my friends remember it to this day.

My Nana and I love art books and she actually had some similar to the house rock painting ones, except they are painting animals on rocks. It's actually super fun and cute xD My Nana is one of the best artists I've ever seen
