    A trick to get the face mask to stay put on the nose (and not scratch the bags under the eyes, for us older people) is to cross/flip the elastic straps, so the upper strap goes under the ear, and the lower strap goes above the ear. The face mask will then match the nose angle and facial contours better.

    I actually had a real heart attack whilst wearing the watch last week. I took 2 measuments at the time and both came back with 'high heart rate, results inconclusive'. I was smart enough to call an ambulance and I was attended to (and fixed) fairly quickly. Anyhow, I wonder if the Withings team would like to see these scans so they can learn more and then maybe the watch can advise call an ambulance with accuracy?

    For me, the heart rate detection is much better after the first major update they made. That was around November? But I still noticed that once in a while, the heart rate measurement caps at ~90bpm, even though I am clearly at above 120bpm. Increasing the tightness of the watch strap helps.

    Fantastic interview. One really gets that there is a philosophy guiding product design. Still, there are many sophisticated competitors that add small features we miss in the Withings ecosystem. For me, there are things I world like to see:
    -Quick message replies from the watch
    -Music controls
    -The ability to personalise heart rate zones
    -Calories calculated using the heart rate so that there is a difference between light and intense workouts.
    Thank you for your excellent videos

    i love the withings eco system just wish they had more integration within their products, EG: watch and sleep tracker mat work together to get most accurate results.

    Great overview. Looking forward to software updates & updated benchmark.
    I've been using Steel HR for quite a while & bought Scanwatch recently.
    One of the main reasons why I'm stick with Withings is their durability. I bought my Steel HR around 4 years ago and it is still working fine.
    The app changed few times (Withing => Nokia Helath => Withings again), but the hardware and battery life is still ok.
    The only things I'm really looking forward to Withings would do - improve the accuracy of the scanwatch measurements & add the ability to constantly monitor & export data into Apple Health.
    The only reason I swapped watches with my friend and tried to use Apple Watch was the Gyroscope & ability to export data from there.
    BTW, Now I ordered oura ring, so I would try to use a combination of oura & scanwatch for daily tracking.

    Good interview!!
    Clear, but I cannot grasp the Idea that battery life goes over some key features that makes the smartwatch(tracker) worth wile. As we all know: smartwatches use energy and therefore a battery life of 5/7 days is acceptable. Some brands have 18 hours battery life:( , this makes monitoring at night almost impossible and give you gaps in the monitoring.
    Yesterday I bought the scanwatch dispite the passive HR monitoring. Just wondering if the aFib alarm goes of when it checks the HR or on any given time(sensor active/on?)

    • @vladcosminstefan2587
      @vladcosminstefan2587 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have the same question, but i really think it does only those 30/60 seconds every 10 mins cause only in these periods the green flash (i don't know how it is called) is on. I check the back of the watch some times. But even those intervals are not continues to me, sometimes when i check the bpm screen it tells me that the last measure was taken 12, 15 even 18 mins ago. The charging and discharging aren't accurate... almost once a day scanwatch displays me that i have minimum bpm during the day than night.. i can't really trust these product yet... it gives me signs of aifb but no panic, I'm just waiting for the cardiologic visit... they can't allarm people like this and make them spend extra money. I read about the apple watch and their incredible false positive.. no data of these signs for the scanwatch because it is still early. I will make updates after the visit, it could be helpful for someone.

    • @vladcosminstefan2587
      @vladcosminstefan2587 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi guys. I just did the cardiologic visit yesterday an fortunately I'm in good health. Scanwatch did mess those 8 ECGs of signs of aifb in 3 weeks. I know how and when to use it, I have no tatoos, I even shave the area of my arm where the watch is positioned, the tightness is more than right. Don't know what to say. The cardiologist said that it could be a good technology but it is still primordial. I have still one week to give it back but I have to say that the sleep tracking and the respiratory scan works perfect. I did a poly sleepgram a year and half ago and the results of spo2 during night fits perfectly with the scanwatch!

  • @mathsk1081
    @mathsk1081 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I already ordered the second scan watch and I still have accuracy problems. Maybe the most annoying one is that the time is not accurate. If I do not connect it with my phone I am about 3-4 min off (at the last watch er was even worse ~8 min). Second thing is that the pula rate is still not accurate (no comparison to Apple Watch... maybe I share my data if I find some time in the next two weeks). I can’t say anything about SPO2 or EKG accuracy, but I think for most of the people these things are just for fun (maybe the will be relevant in the future when they can measure during activity).
    I also miss the opportunity to measure continuously the BPM or at least at you see def Intervalls. Therefore, I am still not sure if I keep the watch, although I really love the general design and idea of creating such a Watch. I would even spend twice the price if everything works 😉

    Good to be able to interview people from the company but I am still very disappointed with my Scanwatch. It seems hit or miss with measurements and still no measurement of REM sleep.
    My Scanwatch has now developed condensation on the inside of the glass despite never being used with water; I have always been most careful
    I am now wearing my Scanwatch and my Fitbit Charge 3 and my current plan is to bin the Scanwatch and return to the Fitbit, especially when your tests revealed just how inaccurate the Scanwatch is. Many thanks for that interview Rob! Great to better understand their point of view and where they want to take the scanwatch. I'm still a bit baffled how they responded to your question on giving tips related to sleep quality (meaning using advanced metrics like HRV and related measurements I suppose?), they seem clueless about it and the excuse of "medical" credibility doesn't fly for me. I'm quite disappointed with this, as I bought one recently. If your sleep score is 20, you really don't need to watch to realize you didn't sleep well... Would there be a way to use PPG data to develop HRV features? I guess it's only SW development (just like Oura ring). Anyways, thank you SO MUCH for taking the time to reach out to them! Keep it going Rob, you're really making a difference here with your scientific reviews and follow-ups! :)

      Thanks so much Kevin for the kind words! I guess there is a balance to find with giving people actionable advice. You want to make sure that what you are telling people is based on (solid) medical science and make sure that what you are saying is not hurting anyone. However, if you can do that, many people could benefit. In the end it is up to Withings what they feel comfortable doing, though they could be persuaded if they see there is a big demand, I suspect

    • @kevind6006
      @kevind6006 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheQuantifiedScientist Absolutely, I understand their rightful concern of delivering solid data and validated conclusions. It seems to me that there is a lot to gain both in wellness/health and in Fitness when utilizing the power of HRV derivative metrics. What do you think about this? Considering product placement, this would make a lot of sense to me. There's already the "petit bambou" meditation program which touches the topic of cardiac coherence, but proper integration to the scanwatch is missing. If Oura did it, Withings can do it to! I hope they will get to that point and make it THE must have wearable. Thanks again for your work!

    Scanwatch vs Fitbit Sense, which is better for ECG, HR, and SpO2? I'm interested in the sleep tracking but I also have an Oura ring and a Dreem 2 so that metric is secondary. I'm in the US so I'm still waiting for the Scanwatch and I'm becoming somewhat impatient... I greatly prefer the look of the Scanwatch over any of the available smartwatches and all of the non-health tracking features such as replying to messages, taking/making calls, listening to music, paying for things etc are of very little importance to me which is mainly why I've not given up and gone with a Fitbit.
    That being said, is the Scanwatch worth the wait? Or are all of the health metrics as good or better on the Fitbit Sense? I should note, I'm not a big fitness buff. I don't run or swim or bike so I'm more interested in general health metrics rather than workout tracking.

    To overcome the limitations, Scanwatch needs to integrate a ring pulse oximeter and sensors, along with smartphone. i.e. Spot SAT while motionless is useless? They also need integrate with telehealth like Babylon.

    1/2/2021 - any updates please? The watch is on sale just now and I'm so tempted to buy it, but there's no point if it's not accurate. When is/was this new sw supposed to come out?

    I have other problems not mentioned in this interview. My Scanwatch is great. But disconnects from my phone on a daily basis. That forces me to turn on and off airplane mode, which for some reason is even adviced by Withings themselves. Why is this? Every day opening the app, I get this problem, not being able to sync data.

    Hey Rob can you check out and test Somnofy device, if it is true what they claim (80-90% of PSG) it will be the best commercial device out there, currently that spot is held by Dreem but you have to wear it on your head which makes it not ideal.

    Hi, I really like your videos about wearable (medical) devices. However, perhaps you could help me to find hints for converting activity and sleep observations to FHIR 4 (i.e. using Withings DATA API).
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    BTW: I'm an Austrian too. ;-)

    Can you push them to add menstrual cycle tracking to the Health Mate app for women? It’s the only thing keeping me stuck in the Fitbit ecosystem. It’s such a big deal for around 50% of us!
    Aside from that, I’d still love optional continuous HR tracking for people with relevant health issues (especially common after covid!). This could be useful even if it was just for short periods, like when running a test. This philosophy about tracking trends is all good, but as a medical device, there are people like me with tachycardia and suspected POTS who would benefit from more data.
    I eagerly await a fix for the sleep tracking. It’s not even tracking the time properly right now... I have to update it every morning with data from my Fitbit Charge 2.

      The majority of people with Afib have persistent Afib. If it's just episodes then the majority of episodes last on average 20 minutes plus. This is what my Cardiologist told me. I have persistent Afib myself. It sucks.

    • @GreenlifeFin
      @GreenlifeFin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PS-en7wn ok, thanks. I once had few seconds AF in the EKG at the doctor's and have had similar short episodes every now and then before and after. Now I take ECG manually with my Withings when I feel odd, it has not found anything abnormal yet. Maybe I don't have clinical AF, hope so, just normal arythmia.
      Sorry to hear you have it persistent. Good luck and thanks a lot for answering.

    • @GreenlifeFin
      @GreenlifeFin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Hope in my case I just wanted to find out do I have AF or not. It served that - I don't. Otherwise it serves as timer for boiling eggs and as an alarm clock, mostly... 😅 Ok, quite ok with tracking sleep, not always, not excellent. If I had sleep apnea, might be good. For sports or HR, not good. Often loses the HR when I log the sports.
      The app is lousy with HR reporting, you cannot practically see any details.
      Measurements notes don't have muscle %. I want to track muscles too, not only fat % and weight.
      And when I feel and see something is not normal with my heart, having arhythmias, it still shows (as said in the specs) "normal".
      The oxygen saturation I don't trust.
      If I could I would certainly buy an Apple Watch.
