  • The choice between Clipless pedals and flat bike pedals has been an ongoing debate in the EMTB community for some time now, but maybe there's a new way of thinking about this debate!? There's no denying pedal choice is extremely personal, but if you're after battery saving gains and maximising wattage then maybe there might be a better choice of pedal for you!? Join Chris Smith for an afternoon of pedal testing to find out! 🎬

    You should have had someone who was used to riding clipped in to do this test, for instance, I find technical trails easier with clips as I can use both legs to keep me moving, with flats I'd just not have quite enough leg power to get the bike moving again when the wheels jamed on an obstacle. In short you have to be confident in clips to use them properly.

    i don't see how you can say that clipless pedals are less efficient concerning battery use, you said that you went almost a minute faster, so you have to scale the power consumption, its about the same. BUT it uses less if your power !, that is what you should have measured YOUR average power, not the bike !

    It’s all in the mind. I ride clips, always have, I feel safer and more in control when it’s slippy as I am one with the bike. The only time I unclip is when on high consequence rock gardens. I use SPD with the release tension at minimum and multi release cleats, I can still unclip and dab a foot in time if I need to. I really don’t think there is much time delay between dabbing with cleats or flats. Mud clearance I have never found to be an issue but I don’t put my foot down or stop on most rides and if I do I chose a spot that’s not muddy.

    Clips for me, road, gravel, MTB & EMTB. Been riding with them for 25+ years and hate riding without them. Rode throughout the winter this year in the Surrey Hills in thick mud & never had a problem with them. If I want to release my foot I simply remove it, it’s second nature to me so never feel trapped even on tricky stuff.

    Clips for me for the past 20 years since I had a knee operation. Clips allow me to relieve the pressure from the knee. I am an average rider, not fast but try to go very regular on speed. I don't have an e-bike but planning to buy one shortly. Very interesting comparison. Thank you very much.

    Best of both worlds for me: Clips with the bindings very loose. I don't have to think to unclip, and I get the added power. It's rare with the loose settings that I pop off the pedals if I don't want to. Another benefit with clips is that I always feel I'm in the right position on the bike.

      I find being able to move my feet to 'english' different areas of my flat pedal really expands the kind of riding I can do and actually get away with.....I can't imagine being locked into one position.

    Pre e-mountain bike I always used clip type and cage's before clips were available. Went to flat when I went over to ebiking. I'm probably staying with flats least ways for now. For serious maximum efficiency once the up pedal muscles are developed clips have got to be the more efficient way. Cheers from Northern California!!

    Rode clipless pedals for several years when my riding was more cross country-ish. Certainly great for tech climbing and for sure footedness when descending through techy rocky rooty stuff. And for keeping feet in the optimal spot on the pedals.
    But despite these upsides, I changed to flats when I got onto more challenging tech descents, particularly for coping with having to clip back in on the fly after bad rock strikes or emergency foot dabs. That led to some serious crashes due to gunk in the cleats or simply not having enough time to clip back in before the next drop, corner, or whatever. Unclipping was never a big problem, except during the learning phase of course.
    Flats have got me out of some serious grief. All non-ebike of course, but I doubt an ebike would make me want to change back to clips. Still have them in the cupboard so always there to experiment with I guess.

  • @jokermtb
    @jokermtb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If being that connected to the bike is so important, why aren't there also clip-less gloves, to keep you hands attached to the handlebars? By using the same rationale, having one's hands clipped in the handlebar grips would allow much more efficient use of brake and shifters without needing such a death grip in technical terrain.....and maybe a clipless seat/pants interface for gravel riders?

    On my e-bike I use flats with safety shoes because they have a nice and hard bottom so your feet don’t hurt.

    The acceleration on clips is amazing when you pull up hard. However they are bloody dangerous if you aren't a practiced user, I also noticed that I was completely knackered the day after doing a long ride in the Peak District. I guess that's because I was using muscles I don't normally use. My conclusion is, that it's a risky strategy.

    Ditched the clip-in pedals in the late 90's and never looked back. Foot freedom is way more valuable than being locked in place - you can body english the bike so much better, and as I'm a bit duck footed, it's way more ergonomic for me than my clip ins ever were. Clip in pedals may be 'faster', but they're definitely not more fun.

    I'll put the SPD's/Shimano shoes on if I'm planning a long, non technical trail ride. But 95% of the time it's the V12's and I bike in a synthetic pair of boots in case I have a mechanical I can't repair and need to walk- I don't do bike parks I live in the Cairngorms and most of the fun of the e-bike is attempting silly climbs that I'd never have managed on a regular bike, so the ability to get the foot down is important rather than falling into what appears to be soft heather but is hiding a rock underneath and breaking a bone....!!

  • @nomad-pq4yw8iy7v
    @nomad-pq4yw8iy7v 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    So many factors the rider the style and size of your flats and clips for some a tech climb is easier in clips. I suck at riding clipless but clipping back into a set of shimano style clips that are setup right on the flat and you didn't step in something almost always go right in after you've been riding them a while. There are all kinds of direction one could go with this for instants clips with a small platform or no platform less pedal strike or Crankbrothers clipless pedals that don't have the mud and snow issue so much. That' was just a few things on the clipless side of the equation. In some cases the answer is as clear as well.... mud!

    Anyone that doesn't know they can benefit from angling on a flat pedal is getting NOTHING out of clipless. It is true that clipless will help a good spinner more on a torque sensing e-bike than on a traditional bike. If you always remember to ankle. The slower cadence pedal mashers will get more out of their motors, but use a great deal more battery than a spinner.

  • @hangnrashr
    @hangnrashr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's a reason 95% of EWS and UCI DH riders use clips. They're just better. The only reason I can imagine you would want flats, is incase you need a quick dab or jibbing. With clips, you simply dab less, it makes you keep your feet on and ride tidier (if that makes sense). Perfect foot position every time, no slipping pedals in rough sections and tearing your shins or calves up. Just don't use Shimano type cleats, they cake up with muck and are difficult to clip in and out of. Time pedals for the win.

    Don't use 'Clip' and 'Clipless' pedal interchangeably. They are Clip or Clip-in pedals. Clipless means no clips as in your not attaching your self to the pedal.
    Clip or Clip-in pedals should not be confused with the ye olde Strap-in or Toe Clip pedals.
    Comparing the two pedal types should have been with a rider that was completly compretant and comfortable using either as they will be more effective at push/pull. Given that it is a pedal assist motor. The motor management system will respond to the power and cadence you input into the system and drive the motor that little bit harder and so you will consume more power. Saying that flats are more efficent or or saying they use less power is so far fetched It's un beleavable. You need to consider P=W/t.

    I used clipped pedals I didn't hate them but... I like flats because of a previous knee injury. I want to protect my knees/ankles/hips from twisting forces in a crash and just poor body movement. I wouldn't think tying 11kg skis to each foot, doing a cartwheel is a good idea.
    For racing maybe but I'd really recommend EMBN make a video with sports doctor who can explain the injury that may occur from using them everyday. Even a video with a sport doctor just to explain the common injuries mtbers suffer and how to avoid them could be good (esp as MTB demographic is older now)
