    The "give" in the film advancement is allowed so you can rest your thumb behind it for a more comfortable grip, read that in the instructions manual.

    Regarding the “2 Step” film advance lever you mention; Minolta made it purposely with 30 degree of swing or slack before advancing the 130 total degrees of actual throw. All purpose made, only from the mind of Minoltahhh.

    I bought my XD-11 with the 50mm 1.4 in 1980 and it was my daily shooter until 2001, when I went digital. It was an awesome camera and a joy to use in manual mode. Unfortunately, it got lost when I moved a couple years ago. I sure miss seeing it on my office shelf.

    Still my favourite manual wind SLR. The shutter sound is pure ASMR for camera geeks. Reminds me of my Leica M6 (and that's high praise indeed).

    That gap on advance lever has a reason, if you leave it out in the first step you are faster with advancing the film in hectic situations. You can put your thumb behind it and just go without slipping of or trying to catch a small bit of the lever.

    The times seem the same to you because what you hear is the sound of the mirror, not of the shutter, that camera is special because it can measure the correct exposure and correct that depending on the real light input and not on the theoretical aperture of the lens that may be calibrated differently, so it takes a moment longer and you can't tell the difference when you change the shutter speed. Actually, it is the first camera where you can use aperture priority and at the same time choose the minimum speed when selecting the "green" 125 (you can change that by choosing an other speed in the dial), what the camera does is to use the chosen aperture as long as the speed is not less than the one is set in the dial. lt's actually a program automatic mode.

  • @Caballeroshot
    @Caballeroshot ปีที่แล้ว

    The shutter speed "issue" you're describing is because the camera is on shutter priority mode, the camera is choosing the best shutter speed for the light it's reading. You have to switch to full manual if you want full manual control.

    I respect King Jvpes for doing this video and giving his personal opinions on the Monolta xd11. I have a bunch of cameras and this is the best in terms of shooter experience. The Konica T4 feels great, but does not have the quality or reliability of the xd11. Rollei 35's are an intellectual experience, etc, etc....but I love the xd11.

    The shutter on an XD-11 is so smooth and quiet for an SLR. I've had mine since it was new and the shutter still sounds Sooo Nice. I also have a Nikon F3 and there is no comparison to the shutter sound. Unfortunately the XD 11 does have a few faults like the shrinking leather syndrome. Its not a workhorse like the F3 but have fun with it.

  • @Pyrofries
    @Pyrofries 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yeah; don't see what the big stink about the shutter sound was all about. There's a reason why the shutter speed sounds like that, it's because the camera stops down before opening the shutter to take a light reading (so-called "final check metering system"). There's nothing wrong with the camera; it was designed that way! A 5 minute google search about the camera would have prevented you from wondering if it was just "your copy" LOL

    I'm thinking of getting a Minolta x-700 or a Minolta xd11? Which one do you prefer for a beginner like me? What is the difference between Minolta x 700 and Minolta xd11? Thanks :)

    • @KingJvpes
      @KingJvpes  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      花名前のない the Minolta x-700 has aperture priority, program mode and most importantly manual mode. I'd say the differences are slight but overall game changers. The xd11 has a kayak shutter opposed to the x-700's cloth shutter. It also feels smaller in the hand and has a good reputation for being one of the greates Minoltas ever made. The x-700 on the other hand is designed for the consumer who wants program mode. Also has aperture prioritiy. I'd say the XD11 is a good choice if you know what you're doing! I still like the x-700 more. But the XD11 is deinfielt growing on me.

  • @phoslurperr
    @phoslurperr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I wonder if the shutter sound you are noticing is mainly the mirror slap and because the camera has a very quiet metal shutter and an unusual set up where it stops down before lifting the mirror and then the shutter fires. Maybe the mirror always flips at high speed and you notice it then the shutter itself goes unnoticed? Whereas normally everything happens at once.

    Your XD11 looks beautiful, but it is a mix of 1st and 2nd generation (parts changed) and the leatherette probably is replaced, since it is an early model. Still, the metal Seiko shutter is superb. All these little blades create a wonderful 'release', much smoother than on the X-series. I have a XD7 (11) and a couple of XD5's. Wonderful. My choice of Minolta, together with the X-500/570. X-700 is a happy third, although the XG-M is not bad either.

    The feeling of a two tiered release sensation is a sign of a worn shutter release magnet. Does not effect exposure just slows the shutter action down by a few micro seconds.
    I own a well used and abused copy. I bought mine in 1989 and have been using it since.
    My favorite Minolta SLR was the X570 with motordrive. Not as silky smooth as the XD however

    • @Gabez82
      @Gabez82 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      markwasmer Wrong. The two step he mentioned is purpose made only from the mind of Minolta. The film advance lever has a 30 degree of slack in the 130 degree of total throw. It describes that in their XD literature brochures.

    • @dimitrisxatzis5892
      @dimitrisxatzis5892 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hi guys...i read somewhere that the Minolta xd11 has a special feature at the shutter release. when you press the button the first movement is to close the aperture, then make the light metering and then release the shutter with the appropriate speed. this sequence add this sounds of 2 steps i think. try to observe it without a lens on it. this was added because of the variance of the aperture precision that maybe occur at different lenses

      Luke Probert That's super cool! Do you enjoy the two step film advance or does it bug you? Personally I don't mind it just takes time lol. And also the soft shutter sound is sooooo weird to me loooool

    • @claras_balls
      @claras_balls 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      KingJvpes it's easy once your used to It i keep the advance lever half open and rest my thumb behind it I find it more comfortable then my ae1s and om10s but the shutter does bug me to the point that I think there's something wrong with my camera if I haven't used it for a while, I put a soft release button on there as the feel of the camera works great with the slight delay as your expecting it,

      Michael Tan that's a good camera! They're practically the same as the Minolta SRT 101, which is an excellent beginner camera especially for learning exposure. I'd say be careful cuz some of the light Meyers's tend to die on those cameras.

  • @btrdangerdan2010
    @btrdangerdan2010 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    8:08 that's because this was one of the first or few cameras that Minolta made with a titanium vertical shutter
    Maybe the "two step" thing with the camera is perhaps a double stroke advance lever, where two half strokes for one complete stroke to advance the film. Much like one of the Leica 'S with double stroke.

    • @KingJvpes
      @KingJvpes  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sun and D-970 very much could be! The XD11 I believe was the basis for Leicas R series cameras so maybe some similar designs out into the system! Thanks for the insight! Makes me wanna shoot this thing more and more :)

    • @btrdangerdan2010
      @btrdangerdan2010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      KingJvpes cool. You actually might be right about this camera for Leica's inspiration for their R series, I remember reading about that online

    • @OldCameras
      @OldCameras 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe Minolta did that for ergonomic reasons. Basically when you hold the camera in one hand, your thumb can rest behind the advance lever, so it feels more comfortable, you're less likely to drop it and you can advance the lever faster than if you had to do it from the beginning. So even though it feels like a 2-stroke advance, it's actually just one. The first 30° movement doesn't do anything.

    • @btrdangerdan2010
      @btrdangerdan2010 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Old Cameras interesting. I think this might be the same with my Minolta X-700. Where the lever hangs out a bit for faster advance. I told Kingjvpes about the double stroke thing because I saw that in an old Nikon F2 Japanese commercial where a photographer used two strokes for film advance as he was panning for the delta fleet formation of Harley Davidson motorcycles.

I think I might upgrade the one to a A7000 or A9000 if I can find one in good shape. I like the extra modes and options on the 400si but I actually prefer the older camera in terms of design. I prefer the viewfinder info being at the bottom of the frame. it is way cleaner and less distracting then having it on the left edge. Also the backlight for the viewfinder info is way easier to read at night so if you like doing night photography the older body actually works better in my opinion. Also the 400si has the stupid proprietary hotshoe that was only fixed by Sony in 2012. I also got a 2800AF Minolta flash that was made for the original AF bodies so it was made to work with my A5000. I got it for $7 at the Thrift Store where I got the camera body.

      I have an X-700 and i love it, but it is true that the XD7/11 was the top of the line Minolta for pros.

      The meter is off until you press the shutter button half way down similar to the way digital cameras set exposure and auto focus.

    Don’t know if someone mentioned that before, but 1/30 and 1/500 are basically the same speeds. The difference in exposure then derives from how far the shutter blades are opening.

      The xd is bigger and heavier than the himatic. I prefer the xd because you van see the set and suggested shutter speed in the viewfinder, while the x700 is lacking this feature.

      The XD7/11 was the top of the line Pro camera, i have an X-700 and want an XD7/11 but the X-700 is a perfectly solid camera too and advanced for its time.
