i have two of these kits, the small and the large. i made the small one up using their precut cherry blank, all you have to do is shape the handles. i will make the larger one without the precut!
Don't need one now. Ordered one yesterday. But this kit does look good. Great video on how to make one. Wood By Wright is always right. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Love all your content! You have been a massive inspiration in my woodworking journey so far. It’s been something I’ve been wanting to get into for years, but never had a space to use until recently. So now I’m on my tool-buying journey now that I have space to work. Thank you again for all the time and effort you put into making these videos! It doesn’t go unnoticed. P.S. You call it a “Veritas marking gauge kit” near the end of your video (9:24). I’m still learning, but I’m 99% positive it’s supposed to be “spokeshave kit” lol. I’m also mildly autistic, so things like this stand out for me much easier than most.
Good timing 👍 I bought the Veritas spoke shave kit with the cherry handle blank a couple of weeks ago. I've been trying to get my drill press going again to shape the handle with a sanding drum spindle. Thanks again for the video!
Using a wedding band to keep your bit level is a clever trick. I've seen folks glue spirit levels to their electric drills, but this is the first time I've seen someone use a ring. 🙂.
We attended Arkansas' junk n drive on 65 today. I saw the biggest spokeshave I've ever seen. About 15" long and about 2 inches wide with a very thick, heavy blade. I knew I should have taken a picture.
Oddy I have tapped many things. I have never chucked up a tap in a power drill of any type. The only thing you use the “the yellow device of demons 😉” on is the the tap. 😂 Great project thanks!
What a fun and straightforward build. You are using Rosewood but would most hardwoods be ok? I was thinking of purple heart. It is dense and a challenge to work.
Successfully made this spoke shave after watching the video. Question: In the video you are shown using a router plane that appears to be homemade. Do you have a video or plans available for it?
The video on making that design is here th-cam.com/video/-6WaPXnw9Do/w-d-xo.htmlsi=stCL-FFiaRRkh3Sm But I have made around 10 to 12 different router planes over the years in the channel. All with different designs and kits.
I purchased a wood antic spokeshave like yours. I discovered that the tang is crack off. How can I reattach it. Thanks for all you do, we learned a lot. .... OORAH!!
Thanks for all your hard work on these videos. They are very helpful. I do have a question for you. Do you think if I didn't include the brass wear plate you could turn it into more of a curved bottom spoke shave? I think I will try anyway but interested in your thoughts. Once again, thanks for all the content.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo thank you. I’ll just use some ridiculously hard Aussie hardwood to reduce the wear factor. Or part of the benefit of making your own body is knowing how to make another one. Side note. Love the Dad jokes😀
Hello, I just purchased the same vintage spokeshave and discovered that one of the tangs are cracked off! is there a way of repairing and or welding it back onto the blade? ... please let me know. Thank you, dee
not really. you can try to weld it but as that is a stress point. it will probably just break again. and there is no standard to their size so you can not just get a replacement blade.
Great video. If you like making tools, let me ask you this. Can you take a simple 2 inch chisel and use it in a Krenov style plane to make a cheap smoother? I've seen many vidoes making rabet and grooving planes from a chisel, so how about a Krenov/Chisel/#4?
Hi James, very nice! Love the way that wood finished! Question: What is the purpose of the ring on the drill bit? And what is the meaning of a slotted screw has to be "clocked"? You got my curiosity going 😂😂 Keep up the good work!
Here is a video about the ring trick th-cam.com/video/-0R-R56e7Dc/w-d-xo.html basically it lets me know if the bit is level. Clocking a screw means that they are all pointing the same direction. it is just for aesthetics.
You say --(at 4:33)--that a thick piece of card stock should be able to slide in (between the blade and brass /??)--what size is that gap or clearance ? any dimensions ?as its not shown at all ---and this is the most important gap that allows the shavings to pass through without blocking the mouth /cutting area ---can you show a close up ??
The mouth opening really isn't that important as long as it's larger than the shaving you're wanting to take off. The mouth doesn't have to be crazy tight on this because if the grain is reversing then you just turn it around and go the other direction.
You have so many spokeshaves. Are you what they call a spokesperson?
I made the small version of this kit a little while ago. The result turned out great, and the instructions were easy to follow.

How'd the larger one come out without the blank?

Love it, I was sceptical of the shape of the handle, when you were shaping it, but then once it was all done it looks fantastic well done.

Yep. Slip of the tongue didn't catch until after editing the video.
Good timing 👍

James your mother wanted a spoke shave at the last tool sale, now you have a Mothers Day present for her! and you get to make another one 😀
Definately going to make those! Great idea for off cuts.
I really hate it when you do one of these tools making video. Now I have to buy a kit and try it myself 😄😄😄. Looking forward to trying this kit out.

Sounds like a Cooper's spokeshave. Sometimes the blades on those are over 3 in wide.
I am glad they invented the spokeshave I mean who wants all those hairy wheels?😂
first time I saw you used power tools, Thanks for sharing those tips and the make, well done!
The demon possessed yellow brace comes out from time to time. Usually when metal working.
Nice. I bought the kit and the pre-made wooden blank from Lee Valley. Thanks!
that rosewood sure looks very pretty, James! The kit is affordable too, so it made my wish list!
Happy ! Bought it longtime ago : just did not do it yet … and now you make this video !!
Beautiful work!
That rosewood looks amazing
Beautiful, James! Really amazing work!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Nice handcraft, thanks for sharing.
Excellent Job!
James has spoken. And shaved. ;-)
That looks like a really fun build. and the final result is pretty too!

Now that is purdy!

most any hardwood would be great. PH would be a fantastic choice.
you can get precut cherry blanks from lee valley
Gorgeous!
You are professional👍
Really an excellent video
Can this kit be modified with a curved blade?? Inside, outside would be great.
Nice job! A coffee grinder kit would be very useful for me. any suggestion for a Canadian source?
I might have to look for one of those.
Nice , spoooook shave 😊.

generally you cant. if you weld, braze or solder it back it will just break there again.

Yes. That works great. Most of the old spokes didn't have a wear plate but you'll find that the body wears down relatively quickly then.

11:16 you sold it to me ! It will replace my razor !
What kit would you think is the best james ? The Veritas or the Hock kit ?
The Veritas is £53 here in the UK with the Hock at £38 .
Cheers
William
They each have their pros and cons. They both can do great work.
Great final joke!

@Wood By Wright How To.... Nice Thank you! 😊
Cool.
9:26 how do you use it as a marking gauge?
Lol. I know right.
Comment down below. Beautiful spokeshave.
White oak is jealous 😂
Thankyou for your prompt reply --appreciate --
nice.......
Omg there are linseed oil stalagmites lol
The comment down below!
Spokesperson. 😂
wait, that was custom made just for you.....wouldn't it be a bespoke shave?

No oak but a lot of spoke
Comment down below ;)
Jeff ? --who is Jeff ? Ok ---I tried seven times --no luck----have given up --will import a Stanley 151 !
LOL I had to go back and look at that one. Not sure what voice to text did on that one. It should say "the mouth opening" not "Jeff." Lol
That gap you have not ----not. shown is --- the secret -----to how this spokeshave cuts /shaves! You only mention it quickly !---
So what you're saying is, you need a spokeshave to make a spokeshave?!!! (dumb dad joke)
Exactly!
