Madeyewlook thank you so much for making this video. I used to edit my pictures (not over edited or anything) and every time I edited them, I would get so many compliments. Then I realized, that isn't me. Yes my personality is the same even if I edit my pictures, but it still isn't me. Then it clicked, I would rather people see the real me and not like me, than people liking someone that isn't the real me. You're gorgeous just the way you are, by the way ❤❤ I love your videos so much!

These types of heavily altered and filtered videos can even affect me when I go to take photos or film. Avoiding it is a lot harder than you would believe, and the influence is much larger than you can ever imagine. At the end of the day, all I want is to be me.

This is why I can't stand instagram makeup. When I see someone says that in their look they used, let's say, ELF's black gel liner, and I've used that product, and I KNOW that it's not that pigmented, smooth, or high quality, it makes me feel like I'm doing it wrong. When in reality, the picture's heavily edited to make the eyeliner look 10x darker.

You rock for making this video! As a photographer, nothing is more frustrating than the constant comments about "make me look skinny" or "can you work some magic to make me look better?". I started a project photographing women called the True Beauty Project to show women that our beauty is more than an appearance and it comes from within! You really exemplify that! ❤️Maybe one day I can photograph you for the project! Wishful thinking ☺️
Keep being you and staying true to your amazing spirit!

You make me so happy, I really needed this video, especially today to be honest. I know that what I see online is most likely photoshop, but I see it so often, that I start to actually think that all of these people's faces are almost flawless. It's been making me slightly paranoid because now every little thing on my face and body bothers me so badly. I always see articles on "how to achieve beautiful skin like a model" or "how to look like a VS angel" and it just makes me feel so inadequate because I know I will NEVER look like that. I can count my blessings that I don't have any deformities, I don't have acne as bad as some others, and I don't have huge weight issues. It's just I want to stop obsessing on trying to look as good as people online.

This is a very true and nice video, though I still want to change my face. Not with filters or drastically or anything. I just wish I didn't have oily skin and have bad acne. I can't find products that work, and I was even on meds at one point .-. my acne just makes me self conscious and insecure. Anyone have good face products for oily skin to get rid of acne??

I deleted ALL of my social media since the beginning of this year. I personally didn't post a lot on my Facebook, but I realized it still affected me seeing how many likes a person had or who was commenting. It was unbelievably ridiculous. Looking at how that alone affected me and how I viewed myself was awful. I also am a type 1 diabetic and really started taking care of myself last year. This however caused me to gain weight and be totally unhappy. But no matter what, I saw how much energy I had and knew I had to keep going and not give up. I went on a bit of a tangent, but I just wanted to let you know Lex, that you have inspired me with your makeup and your opinion of self worth. Loving yourself with no "masks" or "filters" is necessary, because it will help you be the best person you can be. You truly are an inspiration and thank you for sharing this with all of us! I myself needed this especially today! Keep being a rockstar chica!!

I really appreciate your maturity even when you were younger, Lex. Most people DID want to look like others when they were younger (guilty..). Sadly, most people aren't happy with themselves because of imperfections and such. If people don't like you with your natural, bare face, then they don't like the real you. Being yourself (and being happy) is what is important.

I was having this same discussion with my husband. I've worked as a digital artist and photographer, and for myself editing had one point: to make someone look like themselves. I agree with you... all this editing, and especially these apps, seem to push the idea that you aren't enough the way you are. You need to be perfect- smaller, thinner, paler, tanner, taller, shorter,... anything and everything but what you are. It even messes with my head sometimes, and I'm mostly ok with myself!
So keep doing what you're doing, Lex. You make important points, and hopefully people can hear that they're just right the way they are, without makeup, without plastic surgery, just the way they are.

Not makeup related BUT IS BEAUTY RELATED. I shaved off all my hair on NYE as a new year resolution so I can get my long curly hair back. I used to dye and bleach it allllll the time to the point it wouldn't get out of a ponytail anymore. I've been thinking about it for over 3 years and I finally did it. Honestly, I kinda feel more confident with my short hair than I did before. Just more proof that I don't need to hide behind something anymore :3

I've been on a journey toward self love and it is so incredibly hard with imagery and thoughts of "perfection" saturating my perception. Every day I come a little bit closer to loving myself which helps me love everyone else more fiercely. Ironically, focusing on other's well-being first only helps my journey along. Empathy, compassion and forgiveness have taken me so far with others and allowed me to feel the same things for myself. Remembering media is fake is hard and I can't imagine being a pre-teen or teen in this age, but when I allow myself to think about and engage with other people, it does get easier!
We love you Lex! Thank you for being YOU. 😊

Good for you, sweetie! This has been an increasing problem in our society for some time and I'm really sad to see it has bled over to TH-cam, as well. As an example, every time you see a mascara ad...the women have lashes that are 2" long. You darn well know that they are wearing falsies, yet people still buy in to the picture, the image, the idea of it. As far as I am concerned, it should be considered false advertising! Well, I just turned 48 yesterday and, in my years, I've seen massive changes; flaws used to be seen as what made you unique, an individual, beautiful. Now they are seen as something to be hidden, disguised, be ashamed of. It kills me when I see all of these young men and women trying to live up to a certain standard of "beauty" (sorry, but thanks, Kardashians) when I wish, so damn wish, that they would look in the mirror and see the beauty before them. The one thing that gives me hope is that I've lived through the insecurity-over-everything stage and, as I've further aged, I have (what I call) grown into being a woman. While I love to do my makeup, review makeup on our channel (my daughter, whom turns Sweet 16 on Jan 11th, and I run a channel, BeautyDaughtMom), I now realize that I am beautiful JUST AS I AM. And if someone else comments that I'm fat, that I'm old, that I have flaws...I. DON' T. CARE. Why? Because, I love myself just the damn way I am. If I could affect one thing in this world it would be to show young men and women exactly how I feel now compared to when I was younger - so they would know that all THIS...doesn't really matter. It's growing into your confidence, your body, your image, and loving who you are that really matters. And FYI, I don't use filters. What you see is what I am. =) Thank you so much, sweetie, for covering this topic; another of the reasons I am so happy that my daughter sees you as her role model (she wants to train to become a FxMUA), along with her Mum, of course. =) Have a beautiful day and, to everyone...love who you are. The saying is oh so true - how can you expect someone else to love you, to respect you, if you don't do the same of yourself FIRST. Much love, Shelbie =) (BeautyDaughtMom) xo

I needed this so bad. I've been struggling with how I look for years, even when I was young. ever since I was in 7th grade I've been wearing a ton of makeup because I want to look like someone else. like you said, I see other people I want to be in the mirror whenever I look, and I have cried over my appearance many times. however, I've been growing more comfortable in my own skin and I haven't cared as much what people think of me, because if I'm ok with how I look, I don't care if they aren't. I saw a girl at Christmas I know from way back. We have been friends on Facebook and I would see her pics and was amazed at how great her skin looked. I saw her in person and she had the same amount of blemishes and lines as me. I thought to myself "what's the point, she's beautiful anyway".

I can not agree more with you. I'm constantly feeling that my face is not attractive. if I don't wear my cover up, literally everyone tells me I look sick/angry/red. it really gets to me. but I'm sick of wearing makeup to please others on how I should look. makeup dries out my face and it's expensive. I can't help my red face. I get what you're saying...my face, his face, and anyone's face is not the problem. it's our eyes that need to get rid of the filter on them. tomorrow I'm not even gonna bother with the cover up. THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO! I think its so important for people to know this, because seeing all the filtered people on social medias, sometimes they're so well done its hard to tell its even filtered. So when young girls, like you said, are starting to go through puberty and get acne all over their faces, it can feel like that's not a normal thing, BUT IT IS. I'm just started to get less acne on my face, and im 17. A lot of my friends stopped getting pimples years ago, and seeing all the pictures everywhere of girls who look my age with perfect skin made me feel so self conscious. So every day i would cake on the makeup. Now ive started wearing makeup less often to school and being more comfortable in who i am. Makeup or not, filter or not, i think everyone should strive to feel comfortable in their own skin, and by choosing to use filters less often, I think it is a very possible future we can have.

Thank you! First we had to live up to images on TV and magazines. Who would have thought those same girls who grew up with this impossible & unattainable standards of beauty (because it isn't real life) would get sucked into continuing that stereotype! It is great for the companies making millions off the younger girls and even us who know better 😳. Can you imagine how much $ they are saving in advertising just by using popular TH-camrs? Ever seen a commercial for Morphe? Sorry, off topic. 😂 I saw an ad for GlamGlow's new firming mask - I commented - what is she (the model in the ad) like 14 years old? I believe in prevention, too, but probably 90% is sun damage and genetics! Get some sunscreen! Most things that penetrate the skin (make a real difference, not visibly reduce the appearance of...) must be FDA approved, like Retin A. I said most. Appreciate you making this video! Getting off my soap box. Must have hit a nerve. 🤔👍🏼👏🏼❤️❤️

But it's seeing all the filtered videos/pictures that do this to the young teens/preteens out there... makes me sad... I pray my sons do ever feel down about themselves.. because they are gorgeous... inside and out. I pride myself on teaching them that... everyone always tells them how cute they are... so I always say "people tell you that because you are a sweet boy,the second that changes and if you ever become mean and nasty.. you will become ugly... they go hand and hand... I work in a shall-remain-unnamed makeup retailer and I get soooooo many girls/young women/even older women coming in with skin + makeup complaints that I myself cannot see. A woman will demand a product for her large pores but I'm like WHAT PORES LITERALLY W H A T P O R E S. I truly cannot see what they are so distressed about most of the time. We see photos online of women with perfect (heavily edited) skin and we think, WTF, my skin doesn't look like that!!! Gotta buy stuff so that it does. :/
Thanks for this vid, not enough youtubers are willing to be this honest

Thank you so much, like seriously. Over the past few months, and even the past year, I've been having a lot of trouble seeing my face as my own or even recognzing the bumb ridden face I have without makeup. Personally, I also use mild correctors for like a pimple, which I see as ok, but I've never been even close to posting a photo bare faced. I had a huge smile all throught this video and it truley made my night to hear these things from someone I admire. I'm also an aspiring makup/sfx artist and would LOVE to do youtube in the near future but am terrified of showing my face naked. Hopefully over time I'll be able to own my face and just do it! Thanks again Lex

Thank you so much for this video Lex! I see people on the Internet that you can tell photoshop pee themselves because you will see them in real life and they don't look like what you saw. To me, it's like a big lie to their viewers. I have friends on instagram that, I'm guessing, photoshop themselves. Sometimes they will add color correctness and change their eye color. It makes me sad that they think they need to change themselves to look good on the Internet. But really all these people are beautiful in their own ways and to see them change themselves to look "better" baffles me. Because like you said Lex, in you Instagram Zombie video, "why be [Insert person] if you can be you?" I hope some of these people see this video and see that they are amazing, and they don't need to change for anyone or anything.

I agree, Photoshop shouldn't be used to "fake looks". I am a graphic designer and use many of the techniques for ads and Photoshop. However, when I use PS, intensively, it's normally in a painting-type fantasy image where everything is obviously PS'ed (including the terrain). Ever tool has a purpose and some are using it as a crutch. I've ran into some models who will not work with me if they do NOT have a MUA and/or filtering done....very odd to me as a designer and photographer

Thank you for this! I remember being younger/naive and starting out with makeup and always being so frustrated with myself because my skin never looked as smooth or poreless as all the mua's I looked up to. Now I know it's impossible to achieve that in real life because it's photoshop. Lots of young girls need to realize this

yes. hunny. preach it. God this is deeply triggering, in that I have experienced it, even as a dude. right now, I look at my own face and I see my too-short chin and my round cheeks, -sigh- scarring under the chin from shaving, dark circles, bulging eyes, etc. I could go on for hours about the things on my face and body that I wish would vanish or wish I could change. makeup allows me to temporarily be the version of myself I want to be that day. costumes help. but if I don't have love underneath it, for every weird fold on my body and every eyebrow hair, and every drop of melanin in my skin, I'll never be happy. Lex, thank you for keeping it all the way real about this. I appreciate it. let them youngins know.

I love everything about you and what was said in this video. I think it was spot on tbh. I see hundreds of faces daily of those from social media who heavily alter their faces using filters or Photoshop. I have been a subscriber for a year or two and watch almost every single video and love all the looks you create and the wisdom you spread. I'm glad you understand it and promote happiness of yourself above all else. You use your platform in a great way. YOU are who the upcoming generations need to look up to. I hope that one day I can meet you because you are incredibly personable and understanding.

when beauty gurus did tutorials back then they did it off their webcam no filter. it does bother me a lot how much TH-cam has changed and wants to show us the filtered things. It's really not just the TH-camrs. It's them being taught and believing that they are to appear a certain way to appeal to their audiences. Which they're audience always reassures with "You look better natural!" But then if the youtuber is to not use these 'beauty' tools it's the whole opposite. A mess; really.

Not only are you creative, talented, beautiful, etc. You're also incredibly intelligent and excellent with words. A lot of the things you say are things I feel but can't articulate, and then you say 'em and I'm like "hey, that's the thing I agree with." That's a skill that I'm sure transcends your TH-cam life and makeup skills, but I'm so glad people like you have the reach and motivation to get valuable messages like this out to those who need to hear it. Thanks for doing what you do. :D

Finally someone who tells there truth about all the "flawless" pic and videos . I think the people sometimes forget they can't wear a filter in rl. Sadly it will never stop because there are to many self conscious people out there not knowing they are even prettier with their scars and acne and all the other things.
Oh and by the way, your makeup skills are amazing but you're also such great inspiration to me . I love you 🔥🔥🔥 you make me wanna go out with no makeup on❤️

This video came at a perfect time for me. I am normally confident about myself & my appearance, and feel strongly about loving yourself no matter what. However, today I had a point of uncertainty & found myself wanting to look like someone else and kind of hating on myself, so seeing this video really helped me get back to appreciating what I have & I wanted to thank you for that. The fact that your videos are more than just incredible body paint & makeup tutorials is a breath of fresh air in this over filtered, under connected world of today.

Lex! You are so amazing! Thank you for making this video. There are so many issues with living in a "filtered world". I see it even in my cute little 5-year old from what she hears from her friends at school. I tell her she is beautiful just the way she is & she smiles & says "I know Mommy". I try so hard to protect my kids but it can be hard. Thank you again for making this!

Thank you so much for this video. I have had acne for 13 years now I'm 23 years old now. I get acne on my face and back. I have acne scars that haven't faded specially on my back. I am embarrassed to wear muscle shirts, strapless shirts, and bathing suits. Our society is so messed up. People who have small lips want lip injections just because they "think" that's beautiful. Or breast implants etc. such a shame :/

Wow I needed to hear this today! But that's who I am and who I wanted to portray myself as. Thanks for the encouragement! I'm gonna do the same makeup tomorrow and feel totally glam :D You're wonderful and your honesty is inspiring and helping so many people.
