  • Controversy ensued during an August 3, 1989 USAC National Midget event during ESPN's Thursday Night Thunder broadcast.
Rich Vogler was involved in an incident that also collected Jeff Gordon & Don Schilling. From there, commentator Steve Chassey issues his remarks regarding how he saw the accident. Then there was the apology.

turned out for the best, i think, because of the Gary Lee and Larry Rice era that followed

People have been looking for this for years!
...wait, this was enough to get them fired?

Seriously. That was a polite, genteel disagreement over proper racing etiquette.

Bullshit - Rich Vogler was Up on the Inside - Other driver got too close to try to push him back - Rich did his great racing!!!!

Is this the "incident" that got both Nuber and Chassey fired from Thursday Night Thunder? Or was there a different on-air argument that they had?

    • @jamesbowers5946

I don’t know for certain, but I would guess Larry and Steve got fired for something that happened OFF-air, in relation to this incident.
Maybe they had a loud, profanity laced argument in front of other people in the press box, or went after each other physically and had to be separated/restrained.
Again, I don’t know if either of those things happened, but what they said on the air wouldn’t constitute a fireable offense in my view, unless USAC had an issue with commentators showing anything other than the usual neutral, descriptive commentary.
What Nuber and Chassey said was certainly opinionated, but both used a professional tone and didn’t get hostile or aggressive with each other.

@@jamesbowers5946: I was expecting fireworks. I won't speculate on what might have happened behind the scenes, but the on-air dialogue here was downright respectful.

Vogler got what was coming to him the next year, after stuff like this and his Indy 500 bump day theatrics and probably numerous other incidents in his career.

Well you opened your pie hole again about Vogel and that ended your broadcasting career. He took his personal vendetta against Vogler onto the broadcast(s). Reminds of listening to Bobby Unser on the Indy 500 broadcast, unprofessional

All to preserve history. Nothing more. Nobody was harmed when all was said & done on this night. Just an interesting footnote in racing history.
The best part that came out of it was Jeff Gordon’s car owner, Rollie Helmling, scored the Diet Pepsi sponsorship because of this crash.
The next morning after this incident, Helmling (who owned a grocery store), still angry, moved all the Pepsi down off the shelf. Pepsi was an associate sponsor of Vogler at the time.
A distributor came by and wondered why all the Pepsi was moved. Helmling told him exactly why. The distributor asked how they could make it up to him. Helmling said, “well, you could sponsor my team.”
From that, a deal was struck. The first option was for Helmling to run Mountain Dew sponsorship on his car. Helmling refused because of the green superstition in racing. The second offer was for Diet Pepsi. Thus, the famed Diet Pepsi #4 was born. All created by this accident.
