When I saw their Instagram post about a k-pop artist branded 100-piece limited edition of Musc Ravageur last week, I felt Frédéric Malle's soul had finally completely left the company. Now, so has his body. I don't hate k-pop, I didn't mind the controversial "Uncut Gems," and in unison with the Acne Studios collaboration, it's clear they are chasing trends-which in itself is the antithesis to Malle's foundational idea behind the brand. This is a day to celebrate for perfumery; instead of rotting away under Estée Lauder, Malle can reclaim his name.
They’ve been trend chasing to be sure, but the brand has managed to retain its essence as much as could reasonably have been expected following the buyout; I feel like Malle was probably the reason they didn’t become an overpriced junk MFK/ Xerjoff brand being shilled by TikTok teenagers, didn’t do rounds of discontinuations, etc. Malle managed to keep the thing relatively intact. Zero doubt it’s gonna go straight down the toilet now. One of my fav brands ever….L’Oréal, Lauder et al. are pure garbage. I’m unable to even articulate how much I hate them lol
This is polarizing. If he is retiring, this is a tragedy for perfume. If he is starting his own thing, this is the best thing to happen to perfume. Let’s hope it’s the ladder. Praying for a Frederic Malle + Antoine lie brand.
Finally get around to listening to this. Yeah, IMHO, it's a clear sign of the times. I agree with you, it's a big deal, even if it's not registering for everyone yet. I managed to pick up my two favorites recently (prior to the news). Monsieur, too late it's been mangled. French Lover, it's also weaker, but I actually like it better, so that's a plus. As for the future, my instinct is it just will be run by committee, let's see...
I hope his brand isn't destroyed by Este Lauder. I hate it when big corps control everything. I bought Magnolia at the new store in Las Vegas last year and loved, loved loved Promise and am going to Vegas at the end of May and was planning to buy Promise at that time. I HOPE they are still there, they just opened last year. PLEASE don't ruin that wonderful brand Este Lauder. Yes I hope he's not ill and will do something in the future. I have six of his scents. I hardly wear anything else anymore.
I love the ones I own too. I'm not sure the brand will be what we've come to expect it to be in the future. I'm sure the counters and stores will remain but I'd expect to see changes with their upcoming releases and a pivot to much more mass appealing fragrances
I will check here in France if I find some info about that but to me since he's not technically a perfumer he will not go to a big House as a perfumer but maybe as an "artistic director"... anyone who checks his biography will learn he spent his childhood surrounded by great names of the perfumery.
I too was shocked to see he's only 61, but 25 years is a long run. Let's hope he has a second wind and new projects around the corner. I think Estee will attempt to keep the spirit of the brand intact, but finding a worthy replacement for him is crucial and maybe impossible. Worst case scenario for me is they don't replace him and it goes on as a headless corporate brand.
Malle has always been adventurous, so doing the same thing once again with a different name doesn't quite fit him in my opinion. I'd like to think he might be onto something bigger, like a fragrance company, a school, something to change perfumery once again, but from a different perspective!
Better buy 'em now, because I get the feeling the Frederic Malle is going to quickly become mediocre crap for top dollar. Regardless, I'm sure he's being well compensated for the sale, and he'll probably have to be sidelined for a couple years. We shall see.

certainly something to do with the restricted freedom he must have felt after the Estée L re purchase imo. He created this brand precisely for the perfumers not to have any limits ...I think the american beauty industry by acquiring major French successes want to acquire a new position but talent is not for sale...My favorites are MR, Vetiver E and Monsieur

It's sad to see the state of corporate perfumery decline, for sure. But great perfume will still be available. It will just be more and more in the domain of the indie and artisan houses: Darren Alan, Clandestine Laboratories, Areej, Les Abstraits, etc. What say ye, Duck?

Well, bigger perfume news: who replaces Olivier Polge, whenever that happens. Anyway, of course this is a big deal. The whole identity of the brand - name aside - was him plus a perfumer working on an idea. Now the whole thing crumbles as a concept.
