We "people with no pedigree" i.e. civilians with no to little to lots of experience need some starting point. You can't just say "get training" because to "get training", you need a belt, holster secondary, mags, ammo, etc. etc. etc. How did Ben and other great competition shooters get to where he is/they are today? "Gear doesn't matter" Coming from a guy who has had most of his gear issued after rigorous testing for military selection. After a long development process before testing. Then he leaves and probably just buys whatever he was issued. Of course it works, everyone else already did the testing. We civilians don't have that and we have to procure our own equipment for defense, first aid, mechanical work, etc. We also have a different set of requirements from the military, law enforcement, etc.

I think he’s saying to focus on the hard skills of shooting well. Not tactics, not gear. In a conversation about shooting good, pedigree doesn’t need to come up, unless you consider recent match scores or classification a pedigree. He also tries to make the point that if YOU want to talk about pedigree, the guys of his pedigree look to developing hard skills first and foremost. Tactics are the easy part, and the minutiae of gear deserves even less attention. There’s also an element of if someone who is better at the hard skills than you AND has a better pedigree is criticizing you, you kind of can’t win. You don’t have a leg to stand on. The only thing you can say is leave me alone, I’m just doing my own thing. Which is fair enough, but I’d say don’t try to enter the conversation about hard skills OR tactics OR pedigree then.

Aaron Cowan at Sage Dynamics doesn't have Matt's pedigree, but I will put his knowledge of optics against Matt any day. Very few good coaches were world champions or Olympians. I've seen a lot of athletes that were very talented, but crappy instructors because either they couldn't communicate it well or were so ego fed that they were more interested in talking about how great they are. Brass facts, Hop, etc aren't making videos about tactics. But arguing that they can't have a gear opinion is stupid. If you wore a carrier for 3 days and found out the seams were crap or uncomfortable, I don't care if you were in Delta or not. I'm glad you saved me from making a bad purchase. And yeah, I've worn armor professionally, but stuff changes constantly. I appreciate someone giving a current perspective.
@ I think most of his point is 90% of your focus should be on shooting. All the guns and tactical gear are in support of one thing and that’s shooting. Almost everyone in this space is putting disproportionate attention on other stuff. Matt’s philosophy is hard skills first and foremost. Pedigree isn’t relevant for hard skills. It may be for the other stuff, but the other stuff isn’t that important. Matt hangs with plenty of practical shooters who have no pedigree other than being good at shooting. I think he thinks you have nothing to offer if you aren’t good at shooting, don’t have a strong commitment to be good at shooting, but you’re into the tactical scene, and, WITHOUT pedigree. There’s probably a need for gear reviewers, but not a huge need. You can just use common sense to buy a gun (maybe whatever is being issued to your local PD) and get good at shooting. If you really need a plate carrier, you can likewise figure out an okay one to buy in like 30 seconds with some common sense. You don’t really need to watch reviews. Matt’s deal is if it’s not hard skills, it’s not that important. I agree.

It was odd that the Hop was real for a minute and highlighted the exact need for gear channels. The uninformed buyer will not just in fact buy a BCM, T2, Surefire M600 turbo and a trex sling on sheer whim. They’ll buy a 400 dollar radical, a crimson trace green dot and a 20 dollar picatinny laser light combo on amazon, or a DDM4 and a 30 dollar no name dot and red charging handle and safety. Theres a ton of utility in knowing what things are junk and are wastes of money, and what things are valuable and worth spending a bit more to get better quality stuff. Knowing that most people will never need more than a sig romeo5 but that it’ll last them basically forever is great to know. Knowing that holosun magnifier mounts are weak as hell and get stupid loose is great to know. Knowing the AEMS is better for nv use than an aimpoint PRO despite being cheaper than an PRO is great to know. I simply can’t understand why someone would be mad at someone saying “Scope A is the same price as scope B, but this scope B has a way better eyebox and glass clarity”. Or saying “Yeah this chest rig has some annoying features that I found annoying while i walked around outside”. Cool no combat experience, but if you couldn’t wear a pack with a chest rig, and I want a chest rig I can wear a pack with, I don’t care if you got a purple heart wearing it or not. Does a pack have a frame that squeaks? That sucks, won’t buy it. If the second amendment is more than self defense, you NEED kit/gear. And if you need gear, knowing what you can about it makes life easier for everyone who wants to not waste 300 bucks on a shitty plate carrier or optic

Funny thing a d boy first taught me and got me hooked on uspsa, had work ammo and gave me some when I ran out said his CO told him to not come back with it and to make force multipliers out of other people at the match. Dude was insanely good and humble and a good teacher. I tried to be the same in my time in uniform and at the range on my own time. Definitely civilians are part of the 2A.
This stream provided the clearest example I've seen to date of the growing schism between the civilian world and the veteran world. You have people like Hop who represent the civilian attitude toward government-sanctioned super-killers like Pranka, and people like Pranka who think that you need to be a government-sanctioned super-killer to have any kind of relevant opinion. But then you have people like Ben who are sought out by both to become better shooters and he sits there giggling at both. What a time to be alive in America!

He initially downplays military experience, but then butt heads with brass and hop because they never used night vision or gear as a career or normal day to day. In that case it seems from Matt perspective, then all you should do is practice with your ccw constantly. What about having a rifle and gear for SHTF prepping and you can't get away from family or job to go to ThunderRanch for a week but you have to watch youtube in the evening and a Saturday to go to the outdoors?
Matt Pranka is 100% right - shooting on demand is everything, but he seemed super out of touch with reality. Brass and Hop have been instrumental to the community and have helped bring so many into it and deliver crucial information before big purchases. Pranka also contradicts himself so many times about credentials not mattering, but then craps on civilians training… total loser take. The 2A is about the right bear to bear arms and form well regulated militias, which Hop and Brass are huge supporters of and have made a big impact for helping get civs outfitted correctly… nothing wrong with that. I feel this was missed opportunity for two thought leaders to come together with extremely differing backgrounds and make the most of it. SAD!

Hey bruh do you know what you should have on your SHTF rifle? You need a light(surefire m650 dft), you need an optic(preferably capable of passive aiming with nods but also you need magnification for PID), and you need a sling. Matt’s constant appeal to authority (“I do this for a living!!!”) is so hypocritical considering he started the livestream off by saying that we should take retired Mil/LE with a grain of salt because “pedigree doesn’t matter”. I happen to agree with a lot of his points about the community, but he just muddied the waters with everything else he said.
So… my understanding of what the delta dude was saying at first is that if I can’t sink enough time into shooting, to get to the basic shooting proficiency of a delta/grandmaster guy, I shouldn’t even bother learning any tactics? Or even bother to carry a handgun daily?
Pranka’s position is that proficiency and the ability to perform on demand is what matters most; more than tactics. If you look at any shooting/gun fight there is only one constant and that is delivering accurate hits on target at speed, which you can only do with proficiency, not tactics.
@@Vurtne47 I mostly agree w that. But he specifically said needing to be at a grandmaster level of proficiency before moving on to anything else. I work 60+ hrs/week, am married, have 3 kids, and regularly “do stuff” every weekend. I’m not taking time away from my family to get a little better.

You can't just say "get training" because to "get training", you need a belt, holster secondary, mags, ammo, etc. etc. etc. How did Ben and other great competition shooters get to where he is/they are today? Coming from a guy who has had most of his gear issued after rigorous testing for military selection. After a long development process before testing. Then he leaves and probably just buys whatever he was issued. Of course it works, everyone else already did the testing. We civilians don't have that and we have to procure our own equipment for defense, first aid, mechanical work, etc. We also have a different set of requirements from the military, law enforcement, etc.
A lot of ex mil guys arent that intelligent. The fish doesnt know the water he is in.

I think he’s saying to focus on the hard skills of shooting well. Not tactics, not gear. In a conversation about shooting good, pedigree doesn’t need to come up, unless you consider recent match scores or classification a pedigree. He also tries to make the point that if YOU want to talk about pedigree, the guys of his pedigree look to developing hard skills first and foremost. Tactics are the easy part, and the minutiae of gear deserves even less attention. There’s also an element of if someone who is better at the hard skills than you AND has a better pedigree is criticizing you, you kind of can’t win. You don’t have a leg to stand on. The only thing you can say is leave me alone, I’m just doing my own thing. Which is fair enough, but I’d say don’t try to enter the conversation about hard skills OR tactics OR pedigree then.
@scm6545 the problem is, unless you have his pedigree, he thinks you have nothing to offer. Aaron Cowan at Sage Dynamics doesn't have Matt's pedigree, but I will put his knowledge of optics against Matt any day. Very few good coaches were world champions or Olympians. I've seen a lot of athletes that were very talented, but crappy instructors because either they couldn't communicate it well or were so ego fed that they were more interested in talking about how great they are.
Brass facts, Hop, etc aren't making videos about tactics. But arguing that they can't have a gear opinion is stupid. If you wore a carrier for 3 days and found out the seams were crap or uncomfortable, I don't care if you were in Delta or not. I'm glad you saved me from making a bad purchase. And yeah, I've worn armor professionally, but stuff changes constantly. I appreciate someone giving a current perspective.
@ I think most of his point is 90% of your focus should be on shooting. All the guns and tactical gear are in support of one thing and that’s shooting. Almost everyone in this space is putting disproportionate attention on other stuff. Matt’s philosophy is hard skills first and foremost. Pedigree isn’t relevant for hard skills. It may be for the other stuff, but the other stuff isn’t that important. Matt hangs with plenty of practical shooters who have no pedigree other than being good at shooting.
I think he thinks you have nothing to offer if you aren’t good at shooting, don’t have a strong commitment to be good at shooting, but you’re into the tactical scene, and, WITHOUT pedigree.
There’s probably a need for gear reviewers, but not a huge need. You can just use common sense to buy a gun (maybe whatever is being issued to your local PD) and get good at shooting. If you really need a plate carrier, you can likewise figure out an okay one to buy in like 30 seconds with some common sense. You don’t really need to watch reviews. Matt’s deal is if it’s not hard skills, it’s not that important. I agree.

It was odd that the Hop was real for a minute and highlighted the exact need for gear channels. The uninformed buyer will not just in fact buy a BCM, T2, Surefire M600 turbo and a trex sling on sheer whim. They’ll buy a 400 dollar radical, a crimson trace green dot and a 20 dollar picatinny laser light combo on amazon, or a DDM4 and a 30 dollar no name dot and red charging handle and safety. Theres a ton of utility in knowing what things are junk and are wastes of money, and what things are valuable and worth spending a bit more to get better quality stuff. Knowing that most people will never need more than a sig romeo5 but that it’ll last them basically forever is great to know. Knowing that holosun magnifier mounts are weak as hell and get stupid loose is great to know. Knowing the AEMS is better for nv use than an aimpoint PRO despite being cheaper than an PRO is great to know. I simply can’t understand why someone would be mad at someone saying “Scope A is the same price as scope B, but this scope B has a way better eyebox and glass clarity”. Or saying “Yeah this chest rig has some annoying features that I found annoying while i walked around outside”. Cool no combat experience, but if you couldn’t wear a pack with a chest rig, and I want a chest rig I can wear a pack with, I don’t care if you got a purple heart wearing it or not. Does a pack have a frame that squeaks? That sucks, won’t buy it. If the second amendment is more than self defense, you NEED kit/gear. And if you need gear, knowing what you can about it makes life easier for everyone who wants to not waste 300 bucks on a shitty plate carrier or optic

Funny thing a d boy first taught me and got me hooked on uspsa, had work ammo and gave me some when I ran out said his CO told him to not come back with it and to make force multipliers out of other people at the match. Dude was insanely good and humble and a good teacher. I tried to be the same in my time in uniform and at the range on my own time. Definitely civilians are part of the 2A.
This stream provided the clearest example I've seen to date of the growing schism between the civilian world and the veteran world. You have people like Hop who represent the civilian attitude toward government-sanctioned super-killers like Pranka, and people like Pranka who think that you need to be a government-sanctioned super-killer to have any kind of relevant opinion. But then you have people like Ben who are sought out by both to become better shooters and he sits there giggling at both. What a time to be alive in America!
Matt and Ben are good friends. And Matt hangs with plenty of USPSA nerds. And he calls out more people from his own community than he does anyone else. The schism is between people who can shoot and people who can’t.

Matt Pranka is 100% right - shooting on demand is everything, but he seemed super out of touch with reality. Brass and Hop have been instrumental to the community and have helped bring so many into it and deliver crucial information before big purchases. Pranka also contradicts himself so many times about credentials not mattering, but then craps on civilians training… total loser take. The 2A is about the right bear to bear arms and form well regulated militias, which Hop and Brass are huge supporters of and have made a big impact for helping get civs outfitted correctly… nothing wrong with that. I feel this was missed opportunity for two thought leaders to come together with extremely differing backgrounds and make the most of it. SAD!
Pranka also stated when the unit needed subject matter experts on [insert thing here] they went to the 'civilian world' for gear, technique, advice.

Pranka’s position is that proficiency and the ability to perform on demand is what matters most; more than tactics. If you look at any shooting/gun fight there is only one constant and that is delivering accurate hits on target at speed, which you can only do with proficiency, not tactics.
