  • Born a slave, Auntie Alice Brown, at just past 105 years old, thinks the Supreme Court's recent ruling banning segregation is going to cause a lot of trouble "down home." Helping herself to a pinch of snuff, the woman, who well remembers Emancipation Day when her slave parents were freed, said:
"I never had bad treatment in all my years of being a slave. Both of us, my master and his family and me and my family, used good manners. I got knocked around a lot more after we were freed and we had to go out and earn our living. Our master was always good to us colored children,"
Born in Ozark, Alabama, on a spring day in 1819, Auntie Brown left the cabin where she's lived ever since that day of freedom, to come to Akron five years ago.

She is (or, sadly, was) an absolute treasure. It's epically tragic that slavery thrived in 'the land of the free.' Thank you for sharing her with us :)

She was a child living as an enslaved person! She has no idea what her mother, grandmother, aunts, uncles, father, grandfather actually went through as enslaved people! She remembers doing her unpaid childhood work and playing! Certain things the mind won't allow you to remember in order to survive!

She was blessed. I've come across so many various viewpoints of the formerly enslaved - From horrible, horrendous stories to those that felt freedom was worse than slavery - they had no way to eat, live, etc. All need to be preserved.

@@CuyahogaValleyindeed. When you've lived a certain way for so long it's hard to adjust. That's why it pisses me off when people say get over it while at the same wanting us to feel sorry for everyone else who haven't been through half of what our people have been through. The number of lives lost were greater than any Holocaust. That's goes for our Native American and Hispanic brothers and sisters to. No one has suffered like us but tide is changing now. All praises 🙏🏽

I have come across many who are 'too young to be that old' so to speak. I go back and attempt to find records and 9 times out of 10 it doesn't fit. But I came to the conclusion that after the things they went through in life - they deserve to be whatever age they want. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
