What a gorgeous building! My in-laws honeymooned there for two weeks in 1941, right before he shipped off to WWII. He bid her farewell at the hotel, and asked that she not accompany him to the train station. Fortunately, he returned home safely. They spent 40+ years together!

If people are staying there, as guests, it’s Bc they’re visiting and doing s bunch of stuff including going for walks and jogs in the park. If they live there in the 63 million dollar apartments, they’re gonna be casual sometimes. I understand what you’re saying. Whenever I’m in the general vicinity of the plaza, I’m usually more dressed up. But that’s because if I’m there it’s because I’m going to some event or a dinner or even just a movie at the Paris and I specifically like to always dress up.
Not to sound silly but the hotel costs as little as 500 a night and it's not even the fanciest hotel. You would look out of place dressed up. This isn't Orange County its NYC. Go for a run in the park then eat dinner at the restaurant.

I was curious as to why Alfred Gwynn Vanderbilt wanted to stay at the Plaza, so I looked it up. His parents lived right across from the Plaza in the largest house ever built in New York. Even though his parents' home had 154 rooms, Alfred liked the idea that he could see his parents whenever he wanted, but he could also get away from them when he'd had enough of them.
My husband and I have a similar arrangement: love each other dearly but we're both fiercely independent and enjoy our alone time. We also keep wildly different schedules. I've got the big "together" apartment and he has a separate place nearby where his studio is. A twist is ours being an open marriage so it also keeps things from being awkward for our respective partners though everyone's on the same page about our situation.
Besides the great building, I really enjoyed that the video was shot in one take. I can only imagine the work and planning which must have went into creating this!
I think it reminds me of Cesars Palace in Las Vegas. I love to look in the shops there. Sometimes I even stop gambling (losing) and buy something to bring home. Once I came home with 2 purses and an empty wallet.

Glorious! Such memories! In the summer of 1996 we walked into the Plaza lobby off Central Park pushing our just one year old daughter in a stroller. Such an overwhelming sense of history. She freaked out passersby because she hadn't any hair yet, but she was able to talk to people as we went by. In May of 1999 we toured Versailles with our now ~4yr old and 14 month children and saw the some of the architectural inspirations for the Plaza I believe some of the opening scenes from North by Northwest with Cary Grant take place in the Plaza Hotel and the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade passes right by the Plaza entrance. Iconic indeed! Thanks for the history of the Plaza Hotel.
Makes modernism look so lifeless and boring - variations of squares is mostly what we get today. No roofs, no details, no grand entrances, beautiful stairs ...

My sister works with migrant farm workers in CA, and they do backbreaking labor, live in makeshift conditions (as many per shack as they can pack in) and have no benefits. All so we can have cheap produce. Between what I've seen there , and the cages, I hope they do stop coming--and let us pay $3/apple.

I lived in town in Wisconsin close to where Hildegard grew up. Years back, my mother and aunts used to talk about her all the time having been from the area. Even though that was decades ago I'm sure people that are old enough and still living still talk about her and her success.
Didn't realize this channel was so big but I stumbled across it late in architectural channels out there. I know this may not be representative of all clips but beautiful, seamless camerawork here, along with informative side panels! Just love the narration and seamless transitions in everything! My 1st stay at the Plaza was in 1974. We had a beautiful and very large 1 br suite facing Grand Army Plaza. In the 1980s when I lived in NYC we used to go to the Plaza after the opera for hot chocolate and cake in the Palm Court. I also loved going to the Oyster Bar on the 58th St side for lunch. It was looking pretty sad by the late 1980s but looks wonderful now.

Stayed there in 79 with hubby and his mom and his bros family. Our room had a fireplace. Heavenly time spent there and around the city that Christmas season. Loved every minute. Thot i had died and gone to heaven.
That was one of the most enjoyable things to watch. Informative without going into too much detail covered a whole range of topics and interests. More of these please.

If the world's habitable zone were compressed to this hotel, at least residents would enjoy up to eight accessible spaces of sparklingly unique character. I stayed there in 1999 July with my husband right before we move to Houston. 4 nights, 5 days. First we went to restaurant for brkfst and they said that we need to change our shorts if we want to eat there🙄so we did and actually liked that little rule which makes u understand that at Plaza, still somethings comes from nostalgic times and we respected. It was a wonderful time. 2 years ago I had a wonderful champagne and caviar treat for St Valentine's and again, it was very nice. Now ourdays, everything is so fast consuming and confused with rhe values etc, every once in a while, to experience this novelty is priceless.
Private clubs still maintain these dress codes. I once invited a guest for breakfast at the Union League and they made us leave because she had on trainers, same at the In & Out in London-- and that's only for breakfast! Imagine if we went in for dinner.
Gorgeous and was hoping you'd show that painting of Eloise which I saw there in the late 1960s when I was a fashion illustrator in NYC. I used to hang out there a bit and had to meet a business associate there at one point for a freelance job! I love the Palm Court, fabulous ceiling! I remember Capote's Black and White Ball, that was a big event written up in Women's Wear Daily and other publications! I agree with what someone else said here, the Plaza is no place for scuffy jeans, dirty sneakers, backwards baseball hats and hard hats! Show some class! Dress elegantly when in an elegant place! Even in the 80's if you walked into the Plaza without a coat and tie, you were stopped at the door and politely sent downstairs to Trader Vic's bar...in the basement...but it was nice.

My Mom took me to tea at the Palm Court many times. Incredible space. I seem to remember, however, that the Oak Room was open to Ladies for lunch well before Betty Friedan because I remember being in there once as a teen well before 1969. We also had lunch one time in the Persian Room. One of the things the Plaza did every year was to place a huge, beautifully crafted, chocolate Easter Egg in the lobby.

As a Jaguar XJS specialist and growing up in NY and spending a lot of time in the hotel, I remember several years ago reading that the last guest was an XJS owner and the building had been sold and was being converted to condos. I dined there many times, used the business center and would use the phones around the back near the 57th St. entrance to make business calls making appointments back in the late seventies. Back when the phone booths in Manhattan where the best with a fan that would come on when you closed the door.
I have very fond memories of attending the Russian Nobility Balls at the Plaza Hotel during the 1990's. The hotel was beautifully decorated and the food and service was great.
I went to the Plaza back in the 90’s for tea. We had a great time and walked out to see a wedding party. There were lots of limos plus the bride and groom came to the reception by horse and carriage from Central Park.
Oh My this was a really treat to visit on Christmas 2019!! Thank You for a amazing video of this fabulous building, if those walls could talk, I'm confident they would thrill us with many a sorted stories 😋
Watching this during quarantine is the best armchair travel EVER. I have bad anxiety and my panic attacks are back. Watching these videos make me feel better. Traveling somewhere that I may never get to go.
I love the history of The Plaza. The architecture and the detail of it is actually quite beautiful. While some do not like the way people in the lobby are dressed the hotel does not have a dress code.
I was lucky enough to stay at that two story suite. I got drunk during super bowl and apparently booked a trip for the whole family. We had an amazing time. It’s definitely one of the most grand hotels I have stayed at. I loved the balcony in that two story suite and the office area. The food is also amazing there. The service is top notch. Too bad it’s closed right now. So sad.

As we are on "Lockdown" in Jersey with the CVirus, I felt like I had a mini-trip to "The Big Apple" without violating travel restrictiona! The Visit made my day. Again, many thanks! The first time I went there in the 60's when I was a kid men and women knew how to dress when thy went to a place like the Plaza, now people dress like Disney World tourists.
Are you absolutely insane? Its not the 60s, people don't need to conform to social standards, people can dress how they want. If you are honestly judging people on what they are wearing thats a huge reflection on your personality that you can't even let people live without judging them
There were many parts I quite didn't like and found extremely gaudy, I see historically how this hotel is significant but personally my aesthetic is "trash, but comfortable"
Funny you should compare them to Walt Disney World tourists, as if you look at early photos of Disneyland, you’ll realise just how posh people dressed to go out back in the day. Going to Disney was an event back then, and everyone would put on their Sunday best.
Because people heading out to run in the park, run errands, do laundry, grab lunch and otherwise trudge about the city need to dress to the nines during midday....got it....glad I don't live in your world. I bet you also look down on those who don't dress up to go to the airport. :( :(
Thanks so much for the video. I grew up in NY and passed by and through this hotel daily back in the 70's and 80's (a tough time for the hotel) but I never had much time to look around and never had occasion to stay there. The history is fascinating.
We loved the Plaza last year at Christmas. Excellent all around. The rooms are a little bit basic but the location is wonderful. Can be expensive for food and drinks....I'd go back for the history.

I remember the Plaza back when people dressed up to go there. Not just rich people, everyone did. Even at Trader Vic's, which was the casual tiki bar. Now, like most places after "restoration" a lot of the original details, charm, and idiosyncrasy of the Plaza is gone. At least the architecture survived to offer a glimpse of it's former elegance.

The shops render the classic vibe of the Plaza into a "Mall" type atmosphere. they cheapen the whole "Plaza Experience".

The year that "Home Alone II" was released, I took my little boy for a weekend stay at the Plaza. He still remembers it, decades later.
Love the Plaza. The shops are kind of tacky, though. I would expect Cartier or Christian Dior, not a 50% discount store.

Stayed there in 79 with hubby and his mom and his bros family. Our room had a fireplace. Heavenly time spent there and around the city that Christmas season. Loved every minute. Thot i had died and gone to heaven.
That was one of the most enjoyable things to watch. Informative without going into too much detail covered a whole range of topics and interests. More of these please.

Thanks for this lucid architectural tour! The narrators contrast in timbre, while complimenting each other in content. If the world's habitable zone were compressed to this hotel, at least residents would enjoy up to eight accessible spaces of sparklingly unique character. Detail noting historic, clever conceipts and adapted features much appreciated.

I stayed there in 1999 July with my husband right before we move to Houston. 4 nights, 5 days. First we went to restaurant for brkfst and they said that we need to change our shorts if we want to eat there🙄so we did and actually liked that little rule which makes u understand that at Plaza, still somethings comes from nostalgic times and we respected. It was a wonderful time. 2 years ago I had a wonderful champagne and caviar treat for St Valentine's and again, it was very nice. Now ourdays, everything is so fast consuming and confused with rhe values etc, every once in a while, to experience this novelty is priceless.
Private clubs still maintain these dress codes. I once invited a guest for breakfast at the Union League and they made us leave because she had on trainers, same at the In & Out in London-- and that's only for breakfast! Imagine if we went in for dinner.
Gorgeous and was hoping you'd show that painting of Eloise which I saw there in the late 1960s when I was a fashion illustrator in NYC. I used to hang out there a bit and had to meet a business associate there at one point for a freelance job! I love the Palm Court, fabulous ceiling! I remember Capote's Black and White Ball, that was a big event written up in Women's Wear Daily and other publications! I agree with what someone else said here, the Plaza is no place for scuffy jeans, dirty sneakers, backwards baseball hats and hard hats! Show some class! Dress elegantly when in an elegant place! Keep these coming, loved your great video on the public library as well, another place I used to go to when I lived in NYC many moons ago! Left my heart in beautiful Paris, Rome and NYC and also Boston , love beautiful cities and the first thing I do when I go to any city is study the architectural details!!! One of the first books I got my 3 daughters was the book "Eloise" and I call my cat "Weenie" sometimes like Eloise called her dog or was it her turtle? Love that classic children's book!

Even in the 80's if you walked into the Plaza without a coat and tie, you were stopped at the door and politely sent downstairs to Trader Vic's bar...in the basement...but it was nice.

My Mom took me to tea at the Palm Court many times. Incredible space. I seem to remember, however, that the Oak Room was open to Ladies for lunch well before Betty Friedan because I remember being in there once as a teen well before 1969. We also had lunch one time in the Persian Room. One of the things the Plaza did every year was to place a huge, beautifully crafted, chocolate Easter Egg in the lobby.
I stayed there as a kid in the early 80s. What an adventure running around the place!

As a Jaguar XJS specialist and growing up in NY and spending a lot of time in the hotel, I remember several years ago reading that the last guest was an XJS owner and the building had been sold and was being converted to condos. I dined there many times, used the business center and would use the phones around the back near the 57th St. entrance to make business calls making appointments back in the late seventies. Back when the phone booths in Manhattan where the best with a fan that would come on when you closed the door.
Good times then,I was young though
yah. You could also sneak in and use the bathroom in the basement. Where do go to the bathroom in Midtown has long been an issue.

I have very fond memories of attending the Russian Nobility Balls at the Plaza Hotel during the 1990's. The hotel was beautifully decorated and the food and service was great.

I went to the Plaza back in the 90’s for tea. We had a great time and walked out to see a wedding party. There were lots of limos plus the bride and groom came to the reception by horse and carriage from Central Park.

I love the history of The Plaza. The architecture and the detail of it is actually quite beautiful. While some do not like the way people in the lobby are dressed the hotel does not have a dress code.
Lived there from '66-73. A interesting place. Still is a place to visit when in NYC. Thank you

I was lucky enough to stay at that two story suite. I got drunk during super bowl and apparently booked a trip for the whole family. We had an amazing time. It’s definitely one of the most grand hotels I have stayed at. I loved the balcony in that two story suite and the office area. The food is also amazing there. The service is top notch. Too bad it’s closed right now. So sad.

The first time I went there in the 60's when I was a kid men and women knew how to dress when thy went to a place like the Plaza, now people dress like Disney World tourists.

Are you absolutely insane? Its not the 60s, people don't need to conform to social standards, people can dress how they want. If you are honestly judging people on what they are wearing thats a huge reflection on your personality that you can't even let people live without judging them

There were many parts I quite didn't like and found extremely gaudy, I see historically how this hotel is significant but personally my aesthetic is "trash, but comfortable"
Funny you should compare them to Walt Disney World tourists, as if you look at early photos of Disneyland, you’ll realise just how posh people dressed to go out back in the day. Going to Disney was an event back then, and everyone would put on their Sunday best.
What an unpleasant contrast when you are admiring such exquisite beauty and then shorts, jeans, T-shirts and sneakers cross your view. Ugh.

Thanks so much for the video. I grew up in NY and passed by and through this hotel daily back in the 70's and 80's (a tough time for the hotel) but I never had much time to look around and never had occasion to stay there. The history is fascinating.

We loved the Plaza last year at Christmas. Excellent all around. The rooms are a little bit basic but the location is wonderful. Can be expensive for food and drinks....I'd go back for the history.

I remember the Plaza back when people dressed up to go there. Not just rich people, everyone did. Even at Trader Vic's, which was the casual tiki bar. Now, like most places after "restoration" a lot of the original details, charm, and idiosyncrasy of the Plaza is gone. At least the architecture survived to offer a glimpse of it's former elegance.
