From what I heard, the IC-705 seems to have the best overall reception.

    The 7300 isn't 'a shack in a box' it's an HF, 6m and 4m transceiver. It doesn't offer 2m, 70 or 23cms. Nor D-Star for that matter.

The IC7300 has audio response filters for both RX and TX that are adjustable. Can adjust bass and treble. I assume can do same on IC705. So can adjust to fit your hearing. I do use an external speaker with my IC7300. I do like having the spkr on the front like the IC705 does. That way can mount in box for protection and dont cover spkr when operating. This video is comparing audio quality only. Lots more to compare on these 2 rigs.

I have a 705 and I will sell it, first of all its wifi module quality is disastrous and many users struggle with packet loss problems. Now it's under warranty because it won't even connect to any WiFi anymore. I observed the sound even with my eyes closed and the 7300 is clearly better, the sibilance and sizzling of the HF band are suppressed in it, with the 705 it is difficult to remove it due to the minimum of controls and I don't enjoy listening to it anymore. In addition, today you can buy a 7300 for half the price of a 705, which does not have a tuner, does not have 100W, has fewer buttons and faulty wifi from the factory. Attractive size and UHF/VHF for some, I drive a portable and do not use VHF/UHF. So for the ridiculous price that a used 7300 has now, the 7300 is a clear choice. It's all about the antenna and the operator anyway, the differences are so small in these simulated tests that it doesn't say much.

I have both radios and I prefer reception on the 705. I think some of the NR algorithms have been updated on the 705 vs the 7300, just my perception.

6:16 yes, hear the difference. And it seems frequency passband ( may be cnhaged ) narrower on 7300 with consequent sound effect .

Note that the SD card icon was flashing throughout the video, because the audio from all three radios was recorded digitally to memory cards. No speakers (facing in any orientation) or mics were used. Hope this helps to clear up the confusion.

  • @gowithgoldstraw

To clarify, the 7300 isn't really what's normally understood as a 'shack in the box' radio. That generally implies something which combines HF and VHF/UHF operation in one unit - ironically, the 705 is nearer to that. QRO versions of a shack in the box would be rigs such as the Kenwood TS2000 and the Yaesu FT857, FT991(a) etc. Everyone and his dog bought a 7300 when they first came out, but it wasn't long before I noticed that many were quickly moving them on too, for some reason, The 705 is a great little radio but I'm not sure that a touch screen is the kind of interface I'd be wanting to manipulate on top of Helvellyn with the wind howling around my ears!

I guess that the waterfall setting on both the IC-7300 and the IC-705 where not completely identical. If they are identical, the IC-705 is an improved and shows more detail. I noticed the audio differences, but is the audio directly fed to the camera or is it recorded via a microphone? As said before by others the speakers are not the same.

Just a suggestion, in the case that you still have the 7300 and the 7100, there is only ONE comparison video on youtube (that I've found) and I'm pretty sure that lots of operators would like to saw them face to face on RX :) Since both radios are in production, some potentials buyers (like me!) might find it very useful Just saying ;)

What SSB filter width was used on the 7100? It sounds wider, hence more noise - but could equally be due to better DSP (so steeper roll-off on the side skirts) on the 705.

I have both radios and have to say I prefer the sound of the 705 compared here. Both are fantastic radios, the scope is such a powerful feature, the 705 has to be the most exciting portable HF (and other bands) portable to date - the new list price is quite high @ £1,299 Jan 2021. Interesting to see if anyone reports any major bugs with it, or whether the price comes down much?

maybe the sound of the 7300 is a bit without discant sound, because the loudspeaker is on its top, and is hidden by the 705...or is the recording directly out of the rx ??

  • @o00scorpion00o
    @o00scorpion00o 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The Elecraft Kx3 from the videos I've seen and all the forums I've read seems to have a much better receiver and noise reduction than the 7300 and I expect the same with the 705.
I got the PTFX-7300 panadapter for the 7300 and connected it to the Airspy HF+ and they audio is much better, I only listen now via the SDR console. So cool having a very large waterfall and noise reduction that works.
I think if I were to splash that kind of cash I would get the KX3 even if it's a much older design without the bling. I don't really know though as I haven't actually tested the KX3 but I have the 7300 and it's a pretty noisy receiver compared to my FT-891 which has amazing audio via headphones and amazing DNR.
The 705 does have cool features, USB audio for digital and GPS to keep the clock in Sync for FT8 and JS8 Call. It has bluetooth and wifi and D-Star but Fusion is way easier to use I think.

  • @InvincibleViolinist

It is very clear that the rx filter settings (DSP bandwidth) are different on these two radios, so the whole comparison makes no sense and this is 0% useful information - especially for someone who might be making his purchase decision from watching this video. The radios sound different because one radio has about 3 khz bandwidth from the settings and the other radio is around 2,4 kHz. But - it was a VERY good idea to make a comparison video about these two. I am sure they will sound identical with similar settings. Keep the videos coming!
