  • Classic Images (of Columbia, MD) first created this video titled "Vicksburg: Key to the Mississippi" for the 125th Anniversary re-enactment in summer 1988. Jack Foley and his team did a great job with these videos during the 125th cycle (1986 - 1990).
We hope you enjoy. This is another in a series of postings on our TH-cam channel of a cool New series of Old videos -- featured only on here -- taken from a personal collection of re-enacting films and videos from the 1980s that can't be found anywhere else, or else we've tried to find them for nostalgia's sake, but did our own digging and presenting the results of our treasure hunt here. Some are taken from VHS originals or DVD transfers from those VHS copies. Originals were in Standard Def or Videotaped off of TV when they first aired. Some shot professionally and others by individuals with "portable" home video cameras on their shoulders.
Some Classic Re-enacting videos are already searchable on TH-cam, but we wanted to start a new series of some rarely or never before seen classics that either only aired once or where short lived and available only to a select few at the time. We hope you enjoy. These programs presented in this RE-ENACTING RETRO series are presented for the enjoyment of all and we don't claim them for ourselves.

I checked these videos out from our public library, over 30 years ago, and they and the little piece made by Ken Burns, rekindled my interest in the Civil War. Congrats Jack Foley on the whole series. It remains my personal favorite.
And it inspired me to co-produce my own video documentary on the 1864 Red River Campaign, entitled "The Forgotten March." It was published in VHS, also could be found in libraries, but I don't know how one would find a copy today.

They got McPherson mixed up with Schofield. Schofield did not have a command in Vicksburg campaign.

I'm 14 and reading multiple books on the civil war as I homeschool (The Final Fortress, The Killer Angels) and I thought I'd see if I could find anything interesting on that subject online. Turns out, I could.

minus their slaves, of course...something Grant would not permit...all those prisoners would have presented a burden he did not need...

Nope. They weren't paroled until September. And it meant that the Federal Army got the same number in exchange. Meanwhile, the Federal Army recruited an additional 30,000 USCT from the areas captured. So in total a net 60,000 man gain for the federal army. In 1863, the Confederates were facing off against federal armies. In 1864, they were facing off against federal army *groups* (Armies of the Tennessee, Cumberland, and Ohio in the west, Armies of the Potomac and the James in the east). The Confederates would never again take the field in anything resembling numeric parity.

Should be re-titled to reflect content. The material and Narrator is extremely pro south. Why be like that. Frequently mentions, one way or another, brave rebs, but doesn’t say much about Yankees positively. Little disrespectful, thinking about it. I got a chuckle when I realized that narrator, who starts with Masterful Campaign, and doesn’t refer to it once, throughout. Bumbling Yankees stumble into a win at Vicksburg is the more accurate title. I’m sure everything is true, to an extent, but look elsewhere for more facts.
