Been watching Marillion live for over 40 years, the last time being November 2023 in London, where they opened with this track, and stopped counting at 100 shows, too many years ago.
They are a class act and are all fine musicians.

Re: the singer controversy. The guy you saw and heard in this video, Steve Hogarth, replaced Fish and has been with Marillion continuously since 1989. He is still referred to as 'the new guy".
Fish had an angry persona, and a bit of a substance abuse problem. He considered himself more of a poet than musician, but he was the main lyricist and composer on the band's first four albums. He was a bold personality and put his anger and angst over his personal failures into his songs to such a degree that critics actually tried to label Marillion as a Punk band.
Hogarth, in great contrast, is a diminutive, gentle man with a fabulous and very distinct voice who is not only mixed up front on most Marillon albums since his arrival, but also the lyricist since 1989, and he is prone to write much gentler and much more empathetic lyrics.
It's such a huge contrast that many fans suggest that this is really two different bands, one with Fish doing the singing and songwriting, and one with Hogarth filling those roles. Under Hogarth, the strength of Marillion's music is its uncanny knack of moving you on an emotional level unlike any other band. They are all great musicians, but they don't try to astound you with technical mastery of their instruments. The emotional impact of the song is what they always try to enhance and compliment. They aren't trying to excite the listener with lightening speed and bombastic compositions. They are trying to move your heart. Anybody looking for a song like Yes' "Sound Chaser" is going to find Marillion to be a bore. I am happy you seemed to understand the band and what they were trying to do. Take the time to examine the lyrics. They are a key component in what these artists are trying to do.
Finally, for now, Marillion is still releasing new CDs and touring, with the highlight of their touring being "Marillion Weekends" where the band sets down in cities around the world and plays three different concerts for their fans Friday through Sunday. In 2023, there will be six such Weekends planned in Holland, Germany, Italy, Canada, and the UK, with a sixth location yet to be announced. I'll be going to Montreal Weekend in mid-May in a few months.
If you enjoy reacting to Marillion, and like the idea of doing a song no other reactor has touched yet, I'd recommend the live version of "Interior Lulu", 14 minutes of sheer prescience about social media seducing young girls away from real life.
    th-cam.com/video/Lx1EUNqDn-I/w-d-xo.html
With Hogarth-era Marillion, always, always, always elect a live version.

@Yesquire0 Thank you so much again for watching, and for all of that awesome information about he band. I appreciate you clarifying about the singer controversy, I wish I would have been able to stick around longer in the live chat during the premiere so I could have better understood what you meant, so thank you for taking the time to fill me in. I also appreciate the recommendation! I have the song "Gaza" next up as far as Marillion reactions go, but I will definitely include "Interior Lulu" onto the list as well! Have a fantastic day!

Great choice with Gaza! So many good songs in the canon, but as people say, “with Marillion, almost always go for the live version”. Also frequent recommendations are The Great Escape and Neverland. You’re so right about Hogarth’s emotional voice - Marillion are the absolute masters of “tension and release”

    • @Yesquire0
      @Yesquire0 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@JonathonThamesMusic You are most welcome! Kudos given for your spirit of adventure in taking a chance with a band that is new to you.
My guess is you will love Gaza. If your patron gave you a link, I hope it is to a live version. There is a good live version on YT.
Walking that thin line between providing come nice info, and dropping spoilers, Hogarth is very involved with the plight of the Palestinians who were driven against their will into enclaves within Israel. He has some sort or role with a children's charity which helps the kids living withiin Gaza. He wrote an epic song as a result. Given the general idea held by many Americans of good Israelis living in the midst of the bad Arab terrorists, Hogarth's effort was a bit controversial. Maybe check out the lyrics beforehand or get them up onscreen simultaneoulsy with the video. The song is the telling of a story, so the lyrics are important.

I was looking for Marillion reactions and I found your channel by this video. It is so nice to see people understanding, enjoying this great band's music and giving the care it deserves. Marillion is us long time fans' great little secret, we're proud of them for sticking together & proud of ourselves for being there with them along the way, almost since the beginnings in 80's. I could write pages long about how I feel about them as humble individuals, their music, their art, their commitment to the profession, the respect they have for their fans, their work ethic, their creativity & musicianship, and the good things I could write about them wouldn't ever end. But I won't bother you too much. Welcome to the family, hope you're listening & enjoying more of their music at the moment. I'll be around here & looking forward to see you react to some more of great songs from their 40+ years history. Thanks & cheers!

Big Marillion fan here, this song was their opening act last time I saw them live in the US Tour. They’re amazing live: brilliant musicians, very theatrical (in a good, Prog way), they leave their hearts on the stage each time.
If you’re up for it, they have 2 concept albums, best enjoyed when listened in their entirety: “Misplaced Childhood” (Fish era) and “Brave” (H era). Both excellent!
Can’t wait your journey through Marillion music, both with H and Fish as lead singers, as they’re both excellent and different.

The thing with Marillion is that, even though the tracks on their 20 or so studio albums (even the band can't decide on how many it actually is) are just brilliant, once they are on stage, they just hit a totally different level. Gaza live will just blow you away, This Strange Engine, The Great Escape, Neverland, Estonia, they're all just amazingly performed and you should only watch the live version. The one exception to this is the song Care off their latest album (An Hour Before It's Dark), and that's only because there aren't any live versions online yet. This is perhaps the greatest song that Marillion have written. It stands as a glowing tribute to health and care workers everywhere

They're one of those bands that sound far better live and the lead guitarist Steve Rothery is incredible, almost on par with Gilmour.

Much of the music criticism that massacred Marillion in the 80s and 90s has now died, become senile or fallen into irrelevance. I'm happy to see that the new generations - free from prejudice and the hateful opinions of unhappy journalists - are appreciating Marillion's music more and more.

Just like with Genesis, there are two eras: the first one with singer Fish ('79-'88) and the second with Steve Hogarth (from '89).
This track is from their album Marbles ('04), a great album!
Check out the first 3 songs (in a row, it's a combo, studio version) from their 4th album Clutching at Straws ('87), the last one with Fish. Note the bass...
    And live with Steve:

As for recommendations, Jonathon...sheesh, I've got at least 50 absolutely essential tracks. Most of the songs previously noted are among their very longest tracks. With good reason, as they do a tremendous job of taking the listener on a journey. Just don't expect to be out of there in 3:05! I'd say dip your toe into the tracks already suggested. If you're not hooked by the time you get through those, you're not going to be. If you are, well, if you are, you'll find more and more gems the deeper you dive.
