A question I cannot seem to solve is what illness she sufferd from after the Crimean war.

I'm part way through the excellent biography "Florence Nightingale' by Cecil Woodham-Smith (published in 1950). She suffered terribly during the war. largely through the efforts of both military and civilian bunglers who were jealous of her popularity and influence, collapsing severa times from exhaustion and suffering what was termed 'Crimean fever'. I'm ony half way through as yet, but the description of her disability after her return home suggests anorexia. Skipping to the end, I see that she was blind and suffering from dementia when she died, although she was still active until her sight failed ten years before her death at the age of 90.
