hi everyone!! i’m SO excited to be jumping into this long-awaited and highly requested game… and i have to say… i may already be slightly obsessed.
i made the executive decision to begin God of War 2018 completely blind, without watching any previous backstory or playing older games.
while i understand any incoming frustration from long-time fans…
i have not played many old games, and i have never played anything “platform-y,” and knowing myself, i think i will honestly have more buy-in into the story once i’ve experienced the newer games!
i love going into new games and experiences blind, and although i may ask lots of rhetorical questions, i’m sure the pieces will all start to come together naturally as we continue this beautiful journey.
    as always, much love. ❤

Dont worry, its completely fine, the game's story does a great job of explaining Krato's backstory and Ragnarok even more so. And that's what the devs intended, new and old fans can enjoy this game equally

I played this game first only having minimum knowledge about the previous ones and Kratos' story and I still enjoyed it a lot. Plus, it gave me more content to watch on youtube in the form of recaps, summaries, analysis and short stories that connect 3rd game to this one. You won't miss impactful things, maybe just the little details when Kratos is silent or making minimal gestures. There's very subtle hints and references to his past.
Was it gamebreaking or frustrating for me not knowing about them? Not at all, it's still a masterpiece of a game and storytelling.
      Enjoy it!

Well, let's not dehumanize Kratos. Atreus is very explicit with his emotions, but Kratos is much more subtle and Atreus is completely missing all of his father's tells. If you think Kratos isn't deeply affected as much as Atreus is, you've not been paying attention.
As for communication, that's certainly an issue the two have. But the situation is making it especially hard, and Kratos is trying to treat his son like an adult... which he is not.

He has a deep past where anything can happen at any time to him and his son. He not only has to be constantly on go but also his son. It's definitely understandable in his circumstance.

Not necessarily because you have to ( you can play the game as is and it’ll be fine), but because it will make your gaming experience 1000x better and will explain A LOT about why Kratos is the way that he is. By far one of the best year in gaming alongside 2015 where we got Witcher 3, Batman: Arkham Knight, Fallout 4, Undertale, Dying Light, Until Dawn and Just Cause 3 to name a few. Batman: Arkham Knight is 9 years old and still looks better than 90% of modern games released after 2015, Witcher 3 is still stunning to this day as well so you can 100% go back a decade and experience some amazing games that hold up amazingly well.

Regarding viewing recaps, I played the 2018 game blindly and found it enjoyable. But then I watched a recap of the previous games and then played the 2018 one again, and it completely transformed the tale and the experience was far superior.
There is a 3H recap for the old games plot done by a TH-camr named Kaptin Kuba. It's like a movie, and you could even make a video reacting to that recap like a movie reaction video, which would be fantastic. This is especially crucial because Kratos' backstory will be extensively discussed in the upcoming game. So, seeing it now would be much better for you and your entire experience.

Out of curiosity how did you feel about the games playing the newer games first? I ask because I personally started playing GoW back in 2007. And given that I had a different reaction to these games from the beginning. I’m curious about your experience seeing Kratos’ journey.

    • @rubvillaz
      @rubvillaz 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@palerider5716 (SPOILER WARNING)
Okay so the handful of info I knew about Kratos before playing GOW 2018 was-
The Blades of Chaos, Wears the skin of his family, therefore he killed his family, he goes and kills the Gods of Olympus.
So I was no blind player unfortunately with its original epic story, but it still made the experience of 2018 great. To know the significance of his blades as he was picking them up and what he had used them for. Funny enough at the same time, while I knew that, I didn’t know who Athena was.
Fast Forward, (I watched a video, something titled “GOW Has Always Been Deep” whole point was going over the old games and how emotional they were as 2018, when that game came out, critics were saying “Oh GOW FINALLY MATURES” and etc. So I knew, a bit more info as at that point, i figured I watch that video since i probably wasn’t gonna play the old games…that is until-
I was gifted a PSVita and first thing I played was Ghost of Sparta, and it was amazing. Having to play essentially a triple A title on a handful was smooth and looks pretty good. Story was great and it was cool having to fight with a NPC for the final boss. And after losing his brother, camera subtly showing Kratos’s foot near the edge of the cliff was a good call back to the first game. I just love how Kratos doesn’t need to show sadness, you just know he’s damaged by the things he has done and had to endure. Shortly after that, I played the 2 first games.
First game, I ofc was familiar with so I knew about the twist but I didn’t know much about the ending and It started to make sense on why Kratos despises Gods (“You are a god?! You think it be not important to tell me?!” - 2018. Honestly my FAVORITE part of the game is when you have to save your family from…yourself. I was blown away.. like I was just thinking “Man this must’ve been incredible, grown-breaking stuff for a video game back then” I love the stage designs, well…perhaps not the spiky moving pipe you have to climb up twice after dying. Ending was great, it’s so weird how critics said these games never had depth to them when the 1st entry of the series starts and ends with him committing suicide.
2nd game I knew the least about. I love the boss fights for the most part. I remember finishing it very fast so I was definitely enjoying myself. I like how it was more action than puzzles compared to the first game. Crazy to see Zeus for the first time and kills Kratos. I knew about Gaia, so I was kinda suspect of her as she does show up in 3. Story was intriguing as it dealt with time travel to stop Zeus before he killing Kratos. It was a great boss fight and was wild Athena died. I always think about Kratos’s little monologue. “If all of Olympus will deny me, then all of Olympus will die”
I love TC Carson sm as Kratos. I love Judge but I honestly wish people give Carson more credit, to me he did an incredible job. The Cliff hanger was epic and love how 3 picks up directly in that moment.
3 ofc is probably my favorite as the graphics was improved significantly. Gameplay was smoother and it’s just impressive how a game from 2010 looks so modern on PS4 in 2024. Story was epic as you literally fight your way to get revenge. I ofc knew about some of the deaths like Poseidon, Hermes, Helios. I like how this time it didn’t rely on narration anymore and told its story with its visuals. I love the part where Kratos has to find Hope within himself to kill Zeus, leading to call backs from the previous games. Yes I kept spamming the button for like 2 minutes when killing Zeus lol. But I think that moment is important as it makes you realize how Kratos just killed as an indulgence. Sort of reflects back to when Atreus kills Thor’s son. I took some research but it seems like Athena’s spirit was corrupted and explains why she was an asshole in the end. Ngl…my jaw dropped when Kratos stabbed himself. But makes sense as he is releasing hope to the world directly, than giving it back to Athena. Then the game ends and even tho I know Kratos returns, I still was like “THATS HOW IT ENDS ?! “ yes I saw the after credits scene. The blood of Kratos over the image of a Phoenix, symbolizing “reborn” I think. Over time, I grew to enjoy the story more and more.
I honestly hope they remake the original trilogy cuz it’s SUCH A SHAME ppl only know the newer games when I feel the Greek Mythology era of Kratos’s life is SO FASCINATING. It would literally be the coolest Greek mythology movie ever. I know they’re making a show but again it’s focusing on Judge’s Kratos I think.
Quickly: Played Chains of Olympus and it’s sort of my least favorite. Nothing was really wrong with it. It was just surprisingly really short like 4hrs. I played the PSP version so idk if stuff was cut out in that version. Only thing that was important was the name drop of his daughter and when you have to spam circle to push her away. But I would love to replay it again after finishing some games, speaking of that -
As of now I have NOT finished Ragnarok!! I just met with the girl as Atreus and meeting her grandmother. I don’t know how it’s gonna end but considering the MANY times Kratos has died, he probably will die again I assume. Especially cuz you play as Atreus and maybe by the end, you switch to him and your sidekick is either the girl or Sindri. Loving the game so far.
Only game I have not played is Ascension. I think I could stream it on my PS4 but my wifi is terrible. Last time I streamed a game was playin RDR1 for the first time and it felt like playing a scratch up dvd at times…still was blown away by that game tho. I Love RDR Series
Overall, I love those old games, I wish they were more accessible as I feel the story is So intriguing and very important for ppl to understand Kratos more. Like it’s weird to think someone played 2018 and not at all knows why Kratos’s skin is pale white. I hope they do remake the trilogy but only if they bring back TC Carson or still use his voice. But yeah, sorry this is long and took me over an hour to write lol.

The thing about 2018 GoW is that it can totally be played as a standalone game. Since it's a soft reboot of the franchise, even if you know nothing about previous games you can still enjoy it with no issues at all. So I totally respect your decision to go in blind. A lot of people did the same thing.
BUT at the same time, when you really get into the story, it's totally fine if you decide to watch some recap videos that will give you more context about the backstory for the main character. That would surly enhance your experience (especially in the second part of t he game). And watching those recap videos feels like watching a really good movie!
But again, it's up to you. Maybe after this game you will decide to play all of those old games as well. But keep in mind- that's a LOOOOT of games to play. Like at least... 5, if not more.

There was something special about that generation of Sony games. This, Zero Dawn, and Days Gone -- which I only got to experience once they came to PC since I don't do console -- Amazed me with their sheer polish and quality in terms of graphics, voice acting, storytelling, and character development.
And all three in their opening cutscenes, montages, and "tutorial area" gameplay hook you into what's going on better than any other titles I can think of in the past decade.
I only knew "God of War" as console-{extremely insulting expletive omitted} button mashers. Someone got me this on Steam when it dropped for PC, and I was floored at how unbelievably good it was.

This game is fantastic, and absolutely does not require knowledge of previous games for the player to get a complete experience of the story and characters. It is a masterpiece.
With that being said, this franchise in my opinion, is unlike any other. The main character's past is an inssaaaaaaanely well crafted, layered saga in a completely different realm to the realm of this God of War game -
I just wanna emphasise that there are extremely well made, cinematic, well-narrated recap videos (30mins long) that serve not to ruin a blind experience of the future games in anyway, but to get you acquainted with Kratos's history. And knowing his history will let you appreciate certain references and add extra meaning to half the dialogue in this game..
But I also understand that becoming acquainted with who Kratos is/was through a blind play-through of the new games is possible and valid
So regardless, enjoy the game, Im super excited to see u go on this journey!

I've played the entire series and a lot of people would shame for not playing the OG's which give some backstory but I'm happy you jumped in blind. This game gives so much story, back story and lore that you don't NEED to play the other games as this game is completely different from the former. Don't get me wrong the first games were amazing as well but in a different way. I have watched some reactions from other creators and I haven't cried at the first scene since I played the game myself until I watched your genuine reaction to the scene. This and Ragnarök is my favorite game since Skyrim and I play a lot of games. I hope you enjoy the rest of the series someday.

It's worth mentioning that this is one of the first game series, if not the first, that has a 3D environment with a lot of cutscenes where the camera (point of view) never cuts to a different scene, it is ALWAYS in one take, if you notice, which is pretty insane. This was true in the older games of the god of war series but it is more noticeable in this one and in the sequel because of how well executed it is. One take camera, crazy.

A conjunction is a word to combine two parts of a sentence like "but, and, or, if, because", etc. Contractions are two or more words shortened usually using an apostrophe. This is one of the very few games where I disagree with this sentiment -- it is a very legitimate experience to go into it completely blind and then later pretty much treat the previous games as prequels and go back to them. Sure, you'll miss the complete meaning and impact of some stuff, but it's a trade-off for experiencing the journey pretty much like Atreus is and getting stuff revealed to you on the way, and it'll also put a lot of things into perspective when looking back.
I hope she doesn't go back to see any summaries and that she considers playing the previous games after this one is done before moving into Ragnarök.

I have played GOW 2018 4 times from start to finish. I have seen so many youtubers play through the game. Yet i was giddy watching your excitement discovering the game world. GOW and GOWR are truly special and the combination of the voice acting and the background music make the game unputdownable.

Any one who told you not to watch a recap is a fool hahaha. These two games don't actually reveal much about his backstory beyond Kratos telling a story or two in Ragnarok. So if want to know more watch one or don't lol. Up to you. I just hope Sony will release a remake or something of the older games. The only thing I will reveal to you is that the heaviest thing Kratos has lifted was 18.5 million tons. Just so you won't be surprised everytime he picks something heavy up lol. Anyway great video and reaction. I always love when new people play my favorite franchise of all time.

I've seen countless playthroughs of people playing this game. "Look for shiny blue stuff". Yeah most people aren't that bright haha. People usually never get that door with the exploding pot hanging over it.
You are very good for a first time player and are very observant as well, which I appreciate. Looking forward for more eps!

Eralia saying "please don't have choral music this whole time" and then crying before Kratos even lights the pyre.
We're about to be eating good, everyone.
And Eralia? Take your time. Savor it. You want to go in cold, go in cold. I've learned to enjoy watching people get blindsided by this story and these characters.

Found you from your Last of Us (Part 1) playthrough, and was super excited to find someone that hadn't played the first game until very recently, so it was really cool reliving my first playthrough of it when I was 14 when it launched on PS3! Couldn't be more stoked that you're finally getting your hands on GoW, as this was my first GoW game that I finished as well. Such a fantastic game all around, and I can't wait for more!

Damn, falling victim of Eralia a second time. Back in the day casually stumbled upon your first Last of Us: Part 1 video and until you finished the whole thing had to endure looooong months of "HAS ERALIA UPLOADED THE NEXT EPISODE YET?!" and frantically checking my notifications :D In other words - oh boy, here we go again ... :(

Being Norwegian this game is miles above the greek mythology from which Kratos originates. When you first find that lore board with Sküll and Hati, it kind of obscures the meaning of them eating the sun and moon. But growing up learning the Old and New Edda stories, I could immediately draw the connection. Placing the game in norse mythology puts it near and dear to my heart
