Forrest Fenn's Treasure at Auction

  • On November 11 Heritage Auctions announced it would be selling off the Forrest Fenn treasure. Bidding started that day, and will end on December 12. This video explores how we can locate particular lot items in photographs from The Thrill of The Chase, published in 2010--as well as pictures outside the memoir. We can now bid on coins, gold, and artifacts we saw in Scrapbooks, read about in the memoir, and saw inside the chest when Jack discovered it and took pictures as proof for Forrest. These items are valuable; I still think an estimate of about $550,000 is appropriate for the melt value of the gold alone. But there are many other items not accounted for in this figure. And of course each item now has in its pedigree that it was included in the most famous treasure hunt in the world. The most personal item in the chest--and now the most alluring in the auction--is the sealed glass jar in which Forrest put his autobiography. But what version of his story? What secrets are inside?

      Hey, Dan. I hope you're doing well. I'm not sure how you folks survive up there near the north pole, but hang in there. Only 7 more months of winter, right? How are you feeling about things going up for auction?

      @@smellthesunshine4425 Hey, Matt. It was a balmy 9 degrees last night, Ugh. I am already missing those warm summer afternoons when I was out for a long run. I originally had my eye on that coin with the rust until I realized it no longer had the rust. Then I found something with a special personal meaning to me. Having said that if it sells for way over a realistic value, I will just be happy with all the things I currently have, like that signed map by Jack. I hope you and your family are well. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

      @@copperdan7667 My dictionary has a different definition for "balmy" ;) Must be a southern dictionary. I feel exactly the same way about the auction items. At first I just couldn't help it, and I bid on dozens of things. Now I'm being a little more focused. But if I lose them to a higher bidder, so be it. I have some mementos that mean a lot to me, and also the memories. Keep up the running!

    Didn't Forrest say he got the Jade from a Chinese official? Strange how they ended up being neither Chinese nor Jade.

    • @smellthesunshine4425
      @smellthesunshine4425  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I had forgotten that. Where did Forrest mention it? By the way, I reached out to Heritage and asked what the Olmec faces are made of (you can click on a link under any item, and send a question via email). They responded this morning, and said they had updated their listing with measurements. Oops. I suppose "jade" is a "stone" (the term they use); but maybe they don't use the term "jade." It's a little problematic--refers to jadeite and other materials historically.

      @smellthesunshine4425  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I totally relate to the bittersweet feeling. The last 2+ years have felt that way. Considering the post-find alternatives, I'd say this is probably the best outcome. (It could have been stored away and that fact never shared; sold piecemeal already; acquired by a museum that puts it in storage forever; or even melted down.) This way people will likely get to view everything in a week or two, and a lot of searchers will get mementos.

      @@smellthesunshine4425 Yes Matt, beyond any doubt. There was a strong case before any of the Redditt stuff came out, (you may recall I laid out my version of the case to you back then), but it became hard to deny after Redditt. I am eternally grateful to Rudy Greene for proving what we already strongly suspected and providing us an exact location. What he did was remarkable. I would not be surprised if there are some things about Jack and the exact circumstances around his find that we don't know and may never know, but regardless, I feel 9MH is a given. I don't think we can fully appreciate what it must have been like around 1945 when Forrest's brain became permanently impressed by his "secret" place. Can you imagine "owning" Yellowstone in 1945 and what it must have been like? The new "Yellowstone: One-Fifty" series on Fox Nation with Kevin Costner sort of strikes a similar nostalgic theme, I think, reminding us of what it was like before it was filled with millions of people. Of course, I was stupid and only realized all that after the fact. I think for many of us, a post analysis of the chase becomes quite fascinating, including evaluating our own personal thought processes. May I suggest making a video about 9MH from Forrest's perspective as a child, similar to what was done with Fishing Bridge, if you get bored. Your videos are frankly better than a perfect day at the amusement park - they are so well done.
      Only one thing left to do. Try and get the ultimate souvenir! Good luck to you always, Matt.

      @@mustlistengood3346 Of course I recall! We were circling the area. It first came up in our group on a livestream we did in late December 2020. We figured it was somewhere between the watering hole and Seven Mile Bridge after Odious Soul's "paraphrasing" of Jack's email. The specific mention in R&R (only one person could "go alone in there"); Doukopil's piece; the California Sunday Magazine slip-up; the history of that area for trout (still posted on a park services sign nearby). I kept going back to Jack's "wheelbarrow" video. There's no bigger wheelbarrow than the Madison. There weren't too many "creeks" to choose from. Learning the history of the place was not helpful in terms of the changing landscape, but definitely good support for 9MH's significance and notoriety. I kept your email and read a portion in the field out loud to our group. But we were essentially where Jack was on Day 1 of 25, and a little discouraged about the prospect of a grid search sans metal detector. When the Reddit stuff broke, it just let us know that we were at the right "section of forest." The big debate was which creek, wet or dry. Back home, in August of last year, I began thinking more seriously about the 200- and 300-foot comments. I ended up with a rectangle on a map, about the size of a football field. I've thought about doing a 9MH video, which would basically be a solve video. Might be good to make that one my last. If I do, you'll be the first to know, because I'll want to get reacquainted with those foundational texts you shared with us.

Forrest hesitated when he got to the figurines; he didn't seem too sure about that 12k number. Earlier in the interview he says he always paid too much for the collectibles he wanted, never paid fair market price. He's just being funny, I think. And it really doesn't matter now. A: "Maybe they will, but probably not. . . . It was in my autobiography until I removed it for personal reasons." It could be that he removed ALL references to the hiding spot to eliminate legal trouble if it came to that. Those reasons are personal! Or it could be that he held a memory of something very dear to him, but later deemed it too private, or thought it might upset family members. I'm sure we could speculate all day. He could have removed the explanation, but still mentioned the location, I think. "Dear finder: Welcome to a place very dear to me, known to the locals as . . . ." Thanks for the correction, Lisa.

      Your prediction has been noted! I've been doing my own predictions, and I'm a little more confident than you. The lowest priced gold items have already exceeded spot value. Maybe that's an indicator of where winning bids for coins/nuggets will go across the board--perhaps not by the same measure, but nevertheless above spot. We still have many gold coins that were in Forrest's treasure with winning bids parked at about $100. I think some of those numbers are meaningless at this point. On the final day, I don't think I'll be able to resist buying any and all coins and nuggets if they're going for under melt value! Thankfully (for my bank account and my marriage) I think there are a thousand other people with the same thought. Maybe more: this auction has been advertised heavily in the collecting world. The game changed after Jack began answering questions. Then it became: Reddit posts, court documents, photographic analysis, etc. All signs point to one location. If you're going to reverse engineer a solve of the poem, a good starting point is to meditate on the lines of the poem that the author interpreted for us. It's a window into his thinking. It should give you interpretive guidelines for the rest. I heard many fanciful interpretations of "tarry scant with marvel gaze" over the years. I heard doctoral theses on the plethora of ideas hidden in these lines, and all the permutations that arrive when you dissect every enigmatic syllable. But the author interpreted it; and that points the way to interpreting the rest.

    Interesting note - None of the gems were present when the treasure chest was opened with Jack, or Dan. He mentioned more than once the two ceylon sapphires, and the hundreds of rubys. It seems odd that the family decided to keep just the gems. Also, with regard to the olive jar - all intellectual property belongs to the Fenn Estate. So whoever wins it, cannot publish what is contained within. This makes me wonder why - Is there a secret in there they don't want revealed?

    • @TheSchmidt62
      @TheSchmidt62 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, thinking even more deeply - why would the intellectual property be protected? That implies that someone may know the content of that autobiography?

    • @smellthesunshine4425
      @smellthesunshine4425  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Forrest told everyone in the Scrapbook that he removed the cosmetic “gems” from the chest. In the memoir, he had mentioned those (genuine) jewels as being part of the dragon bracelet. His descriptions later were technically correct about the chest including sapphires, rubies, and diamonds, but again they were all on the bracelet. Likewise they were present for Jack’s and Dan’s inventories; the bracelet is visible in the photographs. As for the autobiography, what a fascinating legal imbroglio that would make-but I hope it never comes to that. And maybe it’s not a secret but merely a concern about the unknown. We shall see (at least I really hope so).

      @@willaware3583 That was always my assumption--same autobiography, different vehicles. But I'm not sure. What I don't understand is why anyone would worry about the copyright issue. Pick up any nonfiction book off your shelves, flip through it. It will be FULL of direct quotations of previously copyrighted material. You can quote whole paragraphs--multiple paragraphs. It's kind of the essence of scholarship to engage another's research. You can make money on a work that quotes heavily from another copyrighted source. You can't write a book called, "What Was In The Jar," and reproduce it word for word. But you absolutely can write a book called, "My Thoughts on What Was In The Jar," and engage it for entertainment or education. Fair use covers that. You don't even have to obtain permission. These legalities apply to the jar and bells equally. I honestly think the only gray area is if you were to acknowledge the source and then proceed to read it word for word on a livestream. I don't think the laws have caught up with the technology. So you have people watching copyrighted TV together on monetized livestreams. Gamers play copyrighted video games on Twitch all day long. In between they play copyrighted music. The olive jar and the "book" inside was created for the finder, and Forrest gave them title to it. He expected them to possess it and read it. And one of the things we do with books is read them aloud, share them. You can't pass off the content as your own, or reproduce the work in whole. But a reading? I think it can be done. I don't think it even qualifies as a book. I think you could make a convincing argument that this is more of a message in a bottle, rather than a copyrighted book.

How much more do you need? I was caught up in conspiratorial thinking in the summer of 2020, but then the evidence started coming out. Even recently (the latest FOIA); we have a Yellowstone higher-up looking for cause to restrict access to Nine Mile Hole less than a week before Jack was outed. It makes sense that one of the attorneys thought they should know, since they had the agreement from August. And bottom line: Don't you trust Forrest? He was your friend.

When legal counsel from the Department of Interior subpoenas you, I have to image you don't sleep well in the days leading up to that meeting. They hold all the cards. And yes they could have made an example of Forrest. It was probably discussed. I'm sure his age came into consideration. They could have sued him, and it would have been tied up in court even now. Instead they went with a pragmatic approach--gave both parties their marching orders, and threatened to sue Forrest or his heirs if they didn't comply. Forrest didn't say a word to anyone, even Dal; that's how much of an impact that meeting had on him. And Jack hasn't said a word for nine hundred days and counting. The precedent that's been set is clear: If you leave a trove on government land, you'll be visited by the Chief Ranger and a DOI attorney.

    MATT: This is your claim...."My background is language study, history, philosophy, religion, and interpretation of ancient texts. I like puzzles and games. I'm intrigued by the riddle of the poem."
    Take this with love, Matt... But, for a person who claims the above, your work and productions are lackluster, to say the least. I told you years ago, that I found a book that had undeniable parallels and matches to Fenn's "Memoir" and you've brushed me off every time I brought it up. From what I remember, you didn't even read the book. I also remember you telling me that the book was too "religious" and had too many "dates" in it for Fenn to like it... This is funny because the dates you spoke about are also the postmark days used in Fenn's memoir... I remember you telling me that you thought, Flywater, held all the hints that led Jack to the chest... The funniest part of THIS, and I say funny because it's true, is that Fenn did use the book, and I think you, Doug, and Jack knew so...
    MATT: On page 256 of the BBB, under the visible date of July 23, and the year 1942, which is the postmark for the Flywater chapter, you can clearly read about a love story between Tom and Bessie, who hired a "guide" to help tour overcrowded lands once traveled, continuing the story by telling of a flyfishing trip that the media perceived as a "Romance" which MAY have been brewing between the two (Fenn mentions people using his favorite fishing spots, "...without knowing YES or NO")...
    MATT: Each postmark in Fenn's memoir correlates to a story in the BBB, some of which were historic articles published by "James Swisher" (if you don't know who that is, you really are SUS). The same person who saved Fenn in My War for Me, James Swisher, wrote many an article that paralleled Fenn's memoir stories, for example, a story about Mr. Incognito, who posed as a Marshal for "FOUR" days and was eventually caught (Stouthearted Men) - don't forget that it all happened in a place known for anaphrodisiacs in water (saltpeter) and in an "all-male" territory. It's hard to "MAR" that plan, right MATT?
    Yellowstone was "PROBABLY" the right location, but why, MATT? Did you ever think that maybe Forrest proposed to Peggy there, hence the random thought in Flywater, ("...without knowing YES or NO.") Maybe that's what's in the jar, the "...Wedding Ceremony..." paperwork, documenting the moment Fenn caught the best fish of them all, Peggy, his true "treasure"....?
    MATT: I found so many matches and parallels in the BBB, and I am not a pro like you, therefore I now find you "SUS". If you would've looked a little more in the BBB book you would've noticed that page 130 (BBB chapter, Courthouses) had the same information as Fenn's page 130 in Gold and More. Same with page 15.
    Or, you would've noticed that Bessie was not just a Guernsey Calf, but a person, who lived just over the hill from Guernsey Gulch and Guernsey Creek, and was last seen or heard from on AUG 25 (postmark for "Bessie" and ME)...
    You would be smart to stop pushing me away and start listening to what I tell you. Or, you can just read my book and learn the truth at your own slow pace, it's called, The Catalyst: A Mystery of Indulgence.
    With or without you, the information about Breckenridge and the Parkville Cemetary will be heard. I believe that you need to get on the right side of where the tree is leaning before it falls.
