Footwork in the Olympics (Serbia VS. USA Part 6)

- In part 6 of the 6 part game breakdown we take a close look at Anthony Edwards who takes traveling to a whole other level. Despite 7 steps, 2 pivot foot changes, and a few foot drags, Ant Man is not called for a violation (right in front of the ref) then proceeds to compliment himself for his great foot work. Of course, Dwayne Wade compliments the foot work as well.
See, this BS right here blows away that “modern players are more skilled” narrative. It takes WAY more skill to score when you have to play within the rules of basketball than it takes when you’re allowed to take SEVEN steps to make your move to the hoop. This is why modern basketball is unwatchable to a lot of people.
💯
I read a comment from a Lebron fan a while back who wrote, "Has Michael Jordan ever hit a step back 3?" I said, NO because that is traveling.
Its the crab dribble double step back into gather step then 2 step lay up.

@@AMPR45 He's right in the sense that that's an NBA player doing it and having no automatic reflex to not do it. Dude, the "highest" I got with basketball was street ball and I physically couldn't do this because my brain and body wouldn't allow me to, even in warmup, you just naturally start dribbling or shooting when you're at the threshold because it's completely embedded after like half a year of holding a basketball, let alone a decade or so. It's utterly telling when you see him being capable of doing this without any pause or confusion.
The FIBA should be embarrassed as well, of course, but not because of him doing it, but because of their referees being blind.

The other day I was balling with an old friend we grew up watching 90s NBA and he tells me that he’s gonna give the NBA the next season then he will stop watching it, he’s tired of millionaires playing basketball with no rules when we mere mortals are playing for fun WITH RULES and nobody’s paying us any money to watch us play, basketball is a circus and the are mostly clowns, with due respect for clowns as they actually are paid to make people laugh!
Watch 3x3, they have a cool league, still call travels there, and the play is physical without succumbing to violence. Obviously more limited in talent and play variance than major basketball leagues, but the refereeing kills way less games (so far I only saw two games in the Olympics tournament slightly affected by inconsistent officiating, and I watched around 30 games).
You’re spot on, I counted 5 hard steps from Edwards on that play. This isn’t basketball anymore, it’s something else.
How does that not get called. Seriously.
Most of these clowns would average double digit turnovers with all of the traveling, dislodging, "gathering", and flopping they do if they were playing in the 90s.
The quickness that even rec leagues would call traveling was crazy. If you look at old footage it looks almost awkward sometimes because that’s the way it goes when you actually have to stop on your pivot, you get stuck - literally.
I can't believe they deleted your amazing 40 minute Olympic video! I am honored to be one of the few who saw it before it was deleted :) YT Is truly anti-free speech.

I saw the 40minute it’s sad to see. The walk and carry they do is crazy.
I was excited about the Olympics to be able to see real bball for once. But then, it's the same as the NBA. I know that there are rule differences, but those differences don't include traveling, double dribbles, preferential treatment for certain players, etc. Being Patriotic doesn't mean not being critical of our team (if they deserve it), but holding them to a higher standard. One that previous US teams have met and played under and won under. Winning by not using the basic fundamental rules of the game, are they even playing bball anymore or should this be called something else? To something like "Basic Bball for the Fundamentally Challenged".
Well said.

@@trollinthedungeon5255Difference is Jordan used to get whistled for it
Good gosh. I grew up playing basketball. I could consistently hit shots from anywhere on the court. It was so great because I'd hear the opposing crowd yell to cover me. I was excellent at losing my defender for a catch and shoot opportunity, but that's what I was on offense. My largest weakness was dribbling, and I knew that. If basketball in the 90's were like it is now, I could've been even better HAHAHA
same. i was no pro, but i played on a small high school varsity team because i was athletic, i played great defense, out rebounded guys with 5 inches on me and could shoot from 3. but man the last thing anyone wanted me to do is try to take someone off the dribble. on the bright side i was a really good passer too, so i got the ball in my hands a lot on the offense, and did a lot of motion to get open Js. couldn't beat a guy off the dribble to save my life, heck, i could dunk better then i could layup, and i couldn't really dunk on a defender, needed a wide open court to do it. (i'm 6' i remember working on my dunk on a hoop with an adjustible rim for years in the summer. started at 8.5' once i could dunk comfortably on that i increased it to 9', got good at that, increased it to 9.5' once i got comfortable on that, up to 10' it went. by the time my senior year was starting i could dunk on 10' as well. but man, i couldn't do it against defense, and i needed 2 good steps to do it.
What i'm trying to say is watching Ant i just get sick to the stumach. i grew up on bird/magic and mj. i worked hard on my game to play it right. i worked hard on every aspect of good bb, from watching kevin mckale footwork in the post, to watching how charles barkley was a rebounding machine and a post juggernaught at just 6'5", i spent a lot of time working on all sorts of aspects of my game. i played a lot of one on one because i knew i needed to be comfortable dribbling to get my shot. and in all those years from my first year of middle school playing bb to my senior year of high school, did i get called once for a travel. because you learn the fucking rules of bb the first time you get your hands on the ball. everything i was learning over those years was learning how to move within the rules of bb.
just imagining what i could have done without traveling rules makes me laugh. the nba is a joke.
@@arizona_anime_fan May be we would've been much better if we were young today haha. There are a lot of people that were like you when it came to dunking. You can dunk on a fast break but it's tough with defenders. I was just under 5'10". I couldn't dunk. I could jump high enough to grab rim and hang from it. I was a two legged jumper too. Like you, I would get a lot of rebounds. As small as I was it worked because I was quick, and I loved the art of boxing out. A technique that is lost today. I didn't really play basketball with the intention of going far with it. I mostly enjoyed football, but I played out of joy. So while I practiced a lot, I didn't work on offense as much other than shooting and being able to dribble enough to be able to find a clear lane to pass when I needed to because I LOVE defense...in every sport. The lack of defense is why it's hard for me to watch pro basketball. I want to see big defensive plays. Anyone can shoot a long 3 pointer, or dunk a basketball at pro level. Well most can.
I saw on another video where someone questioned, why is the phrase, "Defense wins championships," when you score on offense? I said, because defense determines who well the offense needs to play. If the team only gives up 70 points in the game, the offense can make some mistakes. Nowadays, because they quit defense, a team can score 100 points and still lose by 20 to 30 points.
The same happened to me when I saw that travel. What was worse for me is how the U.S.A. bench reacted and how he reacted as a result of how bad he faked the defender out. You didn't fake him out. He jumped because he knew you couldn't go anywhere else, otherwise it'd be traveling. You traveled around Earth's equator, and they gave you the points. Now, this guy is on a highlight, as a player who got faked out, when in fact he didn't. He jumped because of the rules of basketball.
It's interesting and very supportive of the earlier times of basketball when you mentioned the first time you touch a basketball, you first learn to dribble. There were a LOT of kids, especially in rural areas who didn't have a basket until they nailed a crate to a tree. Through that time, they did as you said, dribbled the ball. The courts in the big cities were often highly populated, and kids would be dribbling the ball standing, walking, sitting off to the side until they could get on. It's crazy how much they are losing the importance of the basics.
Because of this, I personally think today's NBA need its own record books. It's just not the same game, if you call it a game. I call it a long TV series.
@@rocknjock872 yeah, i feel a bit like an old man screaming at the clouds on my porch sometimes talking about the "good old days", but the reality is this is a really fun and highly skilled game when played right, but watching the nba now is just like looking at someone diarrhea after they ate some taco bell. It's so jarring to me because when someone travels the whole play looks fucked. I mean you don't even have to be watching it closely to realize something weird just happened.
When the league added that "gather step" nonsense and harden started taking 3 steps backward every three he shot... All i'll say is i can't even type the words "gather step" without putting them in quotes. It's traveling by the rules of BB for it's first 100 years of existence. the league added that fucking gather step. can you imagine how unstoppable Manu Ginóbili would have been had he been allowed to take 3 clean steps on every drive to the lane? the king eurostepped with just a left hand was able to get to the hoop when everyone knew he was gonna eurostep there, they all knew he didn't have a right hand. and yet no one could stop him. Imagine if he was able to take one more step?
I miss post play, i miss the artistry of good post footwork like you could get from Kevin McHale, or Michael Jordan or Kareem. Heck i even miss shaq, and shaq played bully ball, but he played it within the rule. none of this elbow swinging football bullshit that LBJ does.
@@arizona_anime_fan I agree. It's horrible. I received a comment on another video of a guy who told me the step back isn't a travel. I said, How do you figure? They aren't continuing their momentum into two steps to perform a lay up or dunk. They're stopping along with stopping their dribble. Then stepping to either side or backward two steps (or some of them a jump). That is a travel just in the sense of moving the pivot foot. If a step back were not traveling, why wasn't it implemented by players when players began performing fade away shots? A fade away is a lot more challenging. Bother moves start with the player in the same situation - needing to create space. It's stupid all of a sudden they can perform an Olympic long jump in any direction after stopping. Imagine if any great shooter from the 60's through 90's were able to do step back jumpers. The first one I can think of is Reggie Miller. Gosh, if he and others could do that cheap move to create space, would Steph Curry have the 3 pointer record?
That step back move is the reason why I think there should be a different record book for them. Every shooting and scoring record would've been immensely higher if those guys were allowed to perform some cheap jump in any direction before shooting.

I knew that you were going to make a play by play on that 😂😂😂. I told my parent exactly that that travel was outrageous. We both are from europe and we can't understand that favour treatment by the refs to the US...
Yep, but they've been lenient towards non-US players as well, especially on first dribble, hand offs as well as one- and two count stops. The game has sped up in FIBA competition in recent years too and the refs have started to turn a blind eye on the rule or been applying it willy-nilly (also, basketball called strictly by the book doesn't sell well these days, I guess). Non-US players tend to travel way less on their lay up drives though. One of the worst offenders in that regard has been Dončić who I call a "travel agent" (among other names), he does it a loooot both in European (FIBA) and NBA settings.
@@dpw6546 when Doncic played in Real Madrid and in Euroleague he didn't travel. I guess he has addapted well to the NBA 😂😂😂
@@rakulnito I admit to not having watched pre-NBA Dončić at all. So I have taken a look at his EuroBasket 2017 highlights now which consisted of a few tens of plays. Not entirely representative this sample, still I've spotted a couple of cases of uncalled travelling: a few on dribble initiation, one stopped lay up drive, two bullcrap step backs (not as ridiculous as the one by Ant here, yet very clear violations), plus a couple on a one count stop and a time where he just took two little steps far out on the perimeter after he stopped dribbling and was looking to pass the ball inside.
It was surprising to see he was slender and quite quick then. So even greater adaptation he's made overseas might've been to American cuisine.
ALL THOSE STEPS
The nba is a travel circus
Was thinking about David Robinson drives and hakeem footwork since i'm compiling footage of both.I came to the conclusion that david with his agility and drive which is faster and more coordenated than LeBron who is Just a Bull with no orientation and Small hands and bad handles,i can say Robinson would be 40/20/8BLO Just in driven.Hakeem would be like 38/21.I put the higher rebounds because it's a dead art today, both were great rebounders and hustlers around the rim.It amazes me that Luka and Westbrook can get 10 rebounds in the 90s If they went for a rebound they would end on the floor.
They're Instagram models/celebrities, not athletes. Sure, they're athletic, but they prioritize how they look and do anything to get that clip.
I knew there would be some out of this world travel. NBA stars can't change direction without carrying the ball. Luka is the worst I've seen. He will actually stop mid dribble like he's waiting for a bus before changing direction.

At least when The Dream Team beat their opponents, it was by sheer skill, these guys are beating their opponents because their opponents have to deal with illegal moves.
The only thing keeping sport afloat was the announcers grilling what the sport has become and now they're all replaced with "yes" men.
R.I.P real basketball
The US would have no chance if they called actual fiba rules.
It would've been legal if he didn't drag and move his pivot foot. It would be hard to see in real time though unless if you are specifically looking at his feet.
I would be the first to call out all these travels shenanigans but tbh the steps before the pivot move are legal, at least in the nba, they are 2 steps back that are allowed as long as the player has not stopped his dribble, ie gather the ball with his 2 hands. I don't think this rule existed in the 90 or 2000s but now everybody uses it in order to easily create separation. The next move, the up and under is a travel because the pivot foot is not set all the way to the ground, but they never call travel for that anyway.
Wasn't 7 steps. He established his pivot with his 2nd step (the leap back). You could rightfully argue that he sloppily dragged the pivot around but there were not 7 steps.
This analysis is a classic
