Justin & Jamie look at very rare and unique EQD Overdrive

  • Hello Pedal lovers!
We're back with another episode of This Old Bench with your bearded and aproned host EQD builder Justin Seeker. In this trip to the basement, Justin welcomes back EQD founder, President, and Lead Designer Jamie Stillman to talk about an extremely rare pedal from his personal collection, The Royal Drive.
Enjoy the relaxed banter as Jamie and Justin highlight the pedal's unique hammered spray-paint coating, "hand sprayed in a garage, no mask. Which probably explains a lot," Jamie surmises about his early days as a pedal maker.
The Royal Drive is one of Jamie's favorites, and he and Justin ponder why it never made it to full production in the EarthQuaker Devices line.
Then listen closely as the pair open it up to reveal the Royal Drive's DIY, veroboard guts. Jamie whips out a Jazzmaster and jams a bit as we listen and learn about the Royal Drive's interesting internal dipswitch setup. The dipswitch allows the lucky Royal Drive owner (of which there are fewer than 10) to try out various combinations of LED, Mosfet, silicon, and asymmetrical diodes to sculpt their signature overdrive tone.
"I'm really happy with this pedal," Jamie says.
We hope you are happy with this fun look at one of EQD's early and most rare pedals, straight outta the basement.
Shot by Chris Tran, Dannesh Moosa, David Whited
Recorded and Mixed by Jeff France
    Hosted by Justin Seeker
    Music provided by Bensounds.

I’m down for a reissue of this with an accessible set of switches on the back for sure, that on the verge of speaker explosion tone @14:37 was killer

Have the dippers surface mounted at front, call it a BIG DIPper, some kind of mountain size wave graphic with surfer dude in front of it and the dip switch being the surfboard, thx, i accept payment in pedal form.

Jamie Stillman talks very quietly and softly, the exact opposite to the way he plays guitar. Love it! And yes, the Royal Drive needs a comeback!

LED 10 combined with asymmetrical clipping 1, is magic. Sounds fuzzy. Sounds awesome. I have a few songs I would use that sound on. It would be great to have this pedal in a platform such as the Palisades.

The paint job reminds me of a Charvel Model 3 I stupidly repainted back in 1990 using the green Hammerite paint, but didn't know how to put the guitar back together again. I was really stumped by the Kahler vibrato,as well. Took it to a luthier, and she commented that it looked like alligator skin. A melting alligator. I still have bits and pieces of that guitar. Love your videos. Need he Rainbow Machine to really annoy my bandmates.
