    The guy playing Frank Pick is another TH-camr called Geoff Marshall. He makes videos about railways in the UK (with a particular focus on the London Underground) and actually does collect old tube maps. On a completely unrelated note, its nice that we now know why the chicken crossed the road.

    Driving a train is a lot more involved than you might think. A driver is expected to know every inch of the line he drives, including the locations of every signal, every set of points (every switch, for you Americans), how long every tunnel and bridge is, the speed limit at any given point on the line... Then he has to drive the train, and that's far from easy. Yes, as you said, trains do have automatic brakes, but only as a safety feature in an emergency, such as a driver not paying attention and passing a signal at danger. In normal operation, the driver is responsible for controlling the speed of his train, including slowing for turns, stopping at stations, and adjusting to the local speed limit.
    It's a lot like the Knowledge. Everyone thinks driving a taxi is an easy job, but in London, it's anything but. Every black cab driver has to be able to hear a passenger's request and immediately formulate a route without tools like maps or sat-nav. He's expected to memorise 320 standard routes, called "runs," through London, covering some 25,000 streets in central London, as well as several major arterial routes in and out of the city. He's also expected to know all points of interest along, and within half a mile of each end of, every run. "Points of interest" include streets, squares, clubs, hospitals, hotels, theatres, embassies, government and public buildings, railway stations, police stations, courts, diplomatic buildings, important places of worship, cemeteries and cremetoria, parks and other open spaces, sports and leisure centres, places of learning, restaurants and historic buildings. *Gasp*
    Applicants to become black cab drivers must first meet strict requirements regarding criminal records. Then they take a written test, where they must, without a map, identify two points of interest selected by an examiner and choose the shortest route between them. They must recite every road used, when they cross junctions, use roundabouts and make turns, and identify other points of interest along the route.
    Taxi driving is a lot harder than it seems, and the same is true for trains.

    The London Tube map is known a topographical type of mapping, which although accurate insofar as the order of place names, it doesn't include the nitty gritty of every landmark/street/statue etc that a cartographical map would contain.
    And yes Connor, I too like to hear of people and their obscure hobbies. The guy who came up with the definitive style of what we know now as the Tube map was passionate about his work, which is why he carried on with it (so glad he did) even though he'd been given the heave-ho.
    Great video Connor, thank you.

    On most tube lines you have 'train operators' who open and close the doors and who start the train moving. They are trained to drive the train fully manually and still have to have route knowledge, traction knowledge and training in emergency procedures. But most tube lines use a system called 'ATO' or 'Automatic train operation' under normal circumstances. Basically the operator starts the train and the train then drives itself to the next station, with the operator being there to intervene if anything goes wrong.
    I believe the subsurface lines (Metropolitan, District, Circle & Hammersmith and City) and the Piccadilly and Bakerloo deep level lines are still fully manually driven.
    All mainline trains in the UK are also completely manually driven with the exception of the core sections of Crossrail (Elizabeth line) and Thameslink.

      The Victoria line has been automatic since it was built in the late 1960s. Currently the Jubilee, Northern and Central lines are also automatic. The DLR (Docklands Light Railway) doesn't have a driver, and you can get a good view at the front or back of the train. The network began in the 1980s, and has since been extended.

    Charles Tyson Yerkes is a recurring character in Jago Hazard's videos. Yes, the London Underground does now have an overall corporate identity, but each line does have its own feel, and remnants of the history and the rival companies that formed the network are still there. Jago Hazard covers a lot of them.
    I'm not sure that Jago's videos would be good fodder for reaction content. He's informative and has a dry wit I rather like, but he's not flashy the way Jay Foreman is. Still, you may enjoy them for your own viewing.

    You noticed how the spelling for color changes in the UK. The Americans write and say it in its original ancient Latin form (color) whilst in the UK we use the approximate French spelling, which came from the invasion by them in 1066. Same with harbor and harbour. You have a great laugh mate, I love to see you laugh!!

I'm sure if I used the Tube regularly it would make more sense. But I've tried and tried to understand it over the years and it remains unfathomable to me. So much so that every time I've been in London I've either used a car or got some one I know to drive me around, instead.

    • @gregoryclark8217
      @gregoryclark8217 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would try to think about the Tube map as some sort of children's game. Find the start and end stations, and then try to get from one to the other whilst keeping line changes as few as possible, but also not going too far out of the way.
      It's fully integrated in to google maps, so you can just set your location, destination, select public transport as the route type, and follow the instructions.
