If anything, your review indicates that for users who are writing rather than drawing/sketching on the paper, the Successor Tomoe River paper is an improvement.

I think a normal review of this new paper would have been a lot of writing but I feel like your tests were much more applicable. TR paper was so unique that these tests were far more revealing to me than a bunch of written lines. Plus the descriptions of the paper and writing feel were invaluable. Great video!! I'm sitting on a quite a stock pile of pre 2021 paper. In 2019 I bought a whole bunch b/c I loved the unique TR paper so much and I felt so ridiculous but now me and my 200 sheets are having a grand old time waiting to see what comes of TR paper in the future

Thrilled by your video creation and to know that TR will live on from the 52 gsm to the 68 gsm to a 3rd generation level that will also use new machines or let’s say not the machinery used to date. I stocked up big and my main source are the Hippo Noto notebooks which are all the 68 gsm but I filled in with other resources of all types and sizes with other vendors as well with the both grades and even A4 single sheets as well. Greatest paper in the world. Thanks again.
It sounds like you are prepared for the paper apocalypse! Thought the new Successor is not exactly the same, it is a great paper. I don't know if they will be making a 68gsm or not, but I think you have it covered!
Glad you found it useful. Another blogger asked me to test Tombow pens on blending. They don’t stay wet as long on the paper so two (or more) colors don’t blend as well.

Yes, both are 52. I believe Yamamoto sells loose sheets now. And SAKAE still hasn’t made a journal of it yet either. Possibly at the end of the year. I haven’t heard of new 68 yet as I believe there is still old stock out there.
Your telling of how Jacob got his samples and then yourself was very funny. I'm looking forward to trying out the new Sanzen TR Successor paper. I wonder how long it will be before we get to buy it in the UK?
Thanks so much Joanna! The company Sanzen is mailing out to the wholesalers at the end of the month. Then I guess companies need to work thru their old inventory and then make whatever they are going to make of the paper (like journals or paper pads) and then it will go out to the public. We were thinking (me, Jacob and the "source") that maybe early spring of 2022?

Right now we don't know when the Successor will pop up in finalized products. The best we can guess is that Sanzen probably would not have bought the rights to TR unless they had some lucrative follow on. We still haven't seen, here in Japan, anything specifically labeled as Sanzen's version of TR.
I was sad to see Tomoe River disappear. I was lucky and got one of the last packs of A4 loose-leaf. I will make some books with it. Also found some little handmade notebooks of the 68gsm from Spain. Did a lot of research to find that. Not sure I will be trying the Successor. I will have to watch your videos on paper products before I decide.
I agree. The fountain pen niche is pretty small and it was a business decision. I believe there are packs of the Successor out now for sale. While not being exactly like the old TR paper, it's the closest to it compared to any other paper I have tried.
Another epic review. Love the inside joke between Jacob and you ;) As I told Jacob on his blog, the tactile aspect is very important to me. I'd already gathered from his review that the texture would be a little different. I haven't tried the "new" TR paper in the 52 gsm variant, but I have an Endless Recorder with new 68 gsm TR and although it's still very good paper, I really dislike how it feels, both to the touch and to write on. I miss the silky feel of the old TR. Hopefully this paper will be better than that and a bit closer to the old paper when it comes to the writing sensation.
I really don't know if it's closer to the "old" than the "new" was. There were some bad batches of the "new". It feels nice but there is the drag with dry and chromoshading inks. I think there will be a group of people that won't enjoy it, like with Cosmo Air Light.

Curious about the different aspects of both papers - you find Successor to be smoother/plasticky while Fudefan finds more texture/tooth. At the same time, you find a drag and ink-absorption that sounds like CAL?
hahaha! Pen trash talk is the best! Actually, I meant the "hand feel" was more plastic-y and smooth. I think Fudefan found the writing to be slightly more feedbacky and I found the writing with dry or chromoshading inks to be "draggy" (a bit like CAL). Thanks so much as always Inky!
Thank you for the detailed review. I was laughing when you explained how you got the paper, I guess the code was takoyaki! I've procured enough Tomoe-river paper that it will last me for about 3-5 years. Listening to the sound and seeing the inks, it looks very promising.
Like different nibs and different inks, each paper kind of serves it's purposes. I prefer the Successor with normal nibs and normal ink. It's crinkly and has less show thru with normal writing. Where it's different is with dry and chromoshaders. We'll see how this falls out. Thanks so much!

Great review thankyou, do keep track of those paper sneaks! And more farting around, as much as possible. I've been playing around with the Successor a bit since its release. My first impression was that it's a lot like the white 68gsm, but I guess it's a bit better than that, if you like your sheening as much as I do.
Yes, it probably just comes down to personal taste. No one paper can be all things for anyone. For me, it all comes down to how it feels when I write. Glad you like the new stuff. I do too! (And paper sneaks-they need to be locked in a room with cheap copier paper!)
Not sure why TR is being changed? It is not broken, so there is nothing to fix. Does this mean I have to start stacking up on the old TR paper? It doesn't seem that I will like the new TR paper.

Thanks so much Joanna! The company Sanzen is mailing out to the wholesalers at the end of the month. Then I guess companies need to work thru their old inventory and then make whatever they are going to make of the paper (like journals or paper pads) and then it will go out to the public. We were thinking (me, Jacob and the "source") that maybe early spring of 2022?

Do we know if the TR Successor paper will end up being used in the Traveler's Notebook "Lightweight" refills? That's my primary way of using TR.
Right now we don't know when the Successor will pop up in finalized products. The best we can guess is that Sanzen probably would not have bought the rights to TR unless they had some lucrative follow on. We still haven't seen, here in Japan, anything specifically labeled as Sanzen's version of TR.

I was sad to see Tomoe River disappear. I was lucky and got one of the last packs of A4 loose-leaf. I will make some books with it. Also found some little handmade notebooks of the 68gsm from Spain. Did a lot of research to find that. Not sure I will be trying the Successor. I will have to watch your videos on paper products before I decide.
I agree. The fountain pen niche is pretty small and it was a business decision. I believe there are packs of the Successor out now for sale. While not being exactly like the old TR paper, it's the closest to it compared to any other paper I have tried.

As I told Jacob on his blog, the tactile aspect is very important to me. I'd already gathered from his review that the texture would be a little different. I haven't tried the "new" TR paper in the 52 gsm variant, but I have an Endless Recorder with new 68 gsm TR and although it's still very good paper, I really dislike how it feels, both to the touch and to write on. I miss the silky feel of the old TR. Hopefully this paper will be better than that and a bit closer to the old paper when it comes to the writing sensation.
I really don't know if it's closer to the "old" than the "new" was. There were some bad batches of the "new". It feels nice but there is the drag with dry and chromoshading inks. I think there will be a group of people that won't enjoy it, like with Cosmo Air Light.
I really appreciate this video when I heard they were stopping production all together made me sad I didnt realise they sold the rights to Tomoe River

Curious about the different aspects of both papers - you find Successor to be smoother/plasticky while Fudefan finds more texture/tooth. At the same time, you find a drag and ink-absorption that sounds like CAL?
hahaha! Pen trash talk is the best! Actually, I meant the "hand feel" was more plastic-y and smooth. I think Fudefan found the writing to be slightly more feedbacky and I found the writing with dry or chromoshading inks to be "draggy" (a bit like CAL). Thanks so much as always Inky!
Thank you for the detailed review. I was laughing when you explained how you got the paper, I guess the code was takoyaki! I've procured enough Tomoe-river paper that it will last me for about 3-5 years. Listening to the sound and seeing the inks, it looks very promising.
Like different nibs and different inks, each paper kind of serves it's purposes. I prefer the Successor with normal nibs and normal ink. It's crinkly and has less show thru with normal writing. Where it's different is with dry and chromoshaders. We'll see how this falls out. Thanks so much!

I could listen to you all day, you explain and demonstrate paper, pens and ink ✍️ so thoroughly. I had to giggle at “fart” about, it reminded me of childhood rhyme where you would point to each person with each word and say, "ink pink pen 🖊 and ink 🖋 who made that dirty stink? I think it was you”, or perhaps,it’s your ink from hell /smell 😅,

Are they the same gsm? Do you know if the Sanzen will be offered in the 52gsm and 68gsm like the old ones?
The stuff I tried was like 52 (though none of it was actually labeled--it felt like 52 also). I don't know if they will be offering 68.

Great review thankyou, do keep track of those paper sneaks! And more farting around, as much as possible. I've been playing around with the Successor a bit since its release. My first impression was that it's a lot like the white 68gsm, but I guess it's a bit better than that, if you like your sheening as much as I do.
Yes, it probably just comes down to personal taste. No one paper can be all things for anyone. For me, it all comes down to how it feels when I write. Glad you like the new stuff. I do too! (And paper sneaks-they need to be locked in a room with cheap copier paper!)

Not sure why TR is being changed? It is not broken, so there is nothing to fix. Does this mean I have to start stacking up on the old TR paper? It doesn't seem that I will like the new TR paper.
The company Tomoe River sold the rights to Sanzen. Since the machines will not be the same, this new "Successor" is Sanzen's offer.
