THT is a difficult watch, but you have to admire the skill of the actors. Elizabeth Moss is so compelling to watch, her facial reactions in the silent scenes are just mesmerising. She can project so much without words. All the cast are great. I think it's a must see.
I did not realize this, but Elisabeth got her start as President Bartlet's youngest daughter in "The West Wing". I did not know she even existed until I saw her in back episodes of "Mad Men" and "The West Wing". She has grown so much as an actor in the 20 years since it first premiered. Would love to see her in "The Handmaid's Tale", but don't have a subscription to HULU. Hopefully one day....
@Pam Alford Elisabeth was acting in movies and TV long before West Wing. She played Polly in Girl, Interrupted when she was 15 in 200 she played James Belushi's daughter in Separate Lives when she was like 9.
That line made me laugh, it was so needed. THT is such an amazing piece of work, very dark at times that I need to take a break from it while watching the series. Cannot wait for season 3.
I’m very impressed by his thoughtful intelligence. The world needs all men to be like this. When Offred hit Fred back, I yelled so loud, I scared my neighbor’s dog!
He is amazing in this show!!!! The scene where Nick is marrying Eden, the look on his face and the exchange of glances with Serena is the best evil villain look. They play so well together, and they’re so good that I just despise them when I’m watching it! I’m so glad he is up for an award, he absolutely deserves it. Not because the show is so great, which it is, but because he is incredible as an actor.
The scene that was so real was when Fred and Serena were having a domestic in the empty house. You wonder if that sort of emotion can have an adverse effect on the actors health over the long term.
It is still happening in the Islamic world. Look up the Talibans, Boko Haram or ISIS. Their practices may be even worse than what is happening in Gilead. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taliban_treatment_of_women
Sentient Being just read your comment. ‘The Islamic world’ is an extremely broad term, the whole world has extremist groups and so do Muslims, but the ‘muslim world’ does not condone any of this. Im a Muslim living in Pakistan and have any freedom that any women in the world has. Don’t stereotype
@@KristinaTheCoolGirl yes, he could have been (Voldemort) Tom Riddles brother in Harry Potter. They could have named him Jimmy! (I think only Brits will get this joke).
I met an Afghani’ refugee this past year. She had to change her name in fear of Muslim men finding or coming after her after she fled for her life to America. She was threatened (along with her entire family) for “blaspheming” and teaching women they have a RIGHT to be individuals and don’t need a man to marry. The Islamic leaders wanted her dead. This is happening RIGHT NOW and people don’t seem to care. We think we have it bad????
The same thing could very well happen under fundamentalist Christianity in this county, and indeed we are moving in that direction at great speed. The hard right wing is imposing their will and agenda all over the country, and currently controls the entire federal government. The extremists have taken over, and even worse is that many states are controlled by the same. :/
Just lina FOR THE 80 BILLIONTH TIME- the author, you know, the woman who wrote the book decided to put nothing in that hasn’t or isn’t happening right now!
I just started watching season one and this is a crazy!! I was crying, shouting, laughing. All kinds of emotions running thru me!! It feels like this is what the world could come to and is already happening in other parts of the world. I'm glad and understand the nominations!! Bravo to this show!!
Nvi Warren I binge watch the first two seasons I was so addicted. It was phenomenal it’s amazing how real it could be. Scary really. I cannot wait until season three comes out.
Interesting that The Simpsons are in actual church more than that any HMT episodes. In fact, I don’t know that I’ve seen a church “service” in a traditional sense on this show. It’s about power hiding behind religion..the religion isn’t so important. Power is
I'm really torn with his character. At the one hand he is a character to be despised on the other hand I feel the appeal of his demeanor, although it is a totally superficial way of seeing him...
Don't feel too bad about it. People give Serena a lot more sympathy than she deserves, and are partly, maybe largely, responding to Yvonne Strahovski's attractiveness.
I've seen some sympathy for Aunt Lydia in the moments where she's showed moments of sympathy and integrity, but people aren't rooting for her as they are for Serena.
The scale of evil that Lydia does outweighs the moments when she shows concern for people. She may have some maternal instincts (pushed onto fully adult women who don't want it, who she condescends to as "bad girls" and "good girls", but she's a person who kidnaps, tortures, brain washes and mutilates women and distributes them like products into sexual slavery. I have no sympathy for her.
Applause to Joseph Fiennes. He does such a good job at capturing Commander Waterford's miserable and evil personality, I can't even finish watching this interview.
That’s how you know he’s such an iconic amazing actor . I want to hang Fred on the wall BUT I DONT WANT TO ENJOY THE INTERVIEW BECAUSE ITS FRED BUT AT THE SAME TIME ITS NOT.
One of the greatest TV villains I've seen come in a long time. There is genuine hate for the character, and I'm sure we all want to see his comeuppance.
She was raised in it (so she is probably indoctrinated) and leaving the church would mean being cut off of all her family and friends. Watch Leah Remini's documentary series if you want to know more about how they force people to stay in the church.
A lot of Pentecostal and Christian radio shows (Revive Our Hearts) subtly promote the theme of women being controlled and fully ruled over by the “authority”.
gwen keto then that is false teaching. I am a Christian woman, women are empowered by Jesus Christ. If you read the Bible, especially the new testament there are many examples and instructions to respect and love women. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
Misogyny and the abuse that women are subjected to is repudiated by Christianity, it is not supported at all. Corinthians 13 "love is patient, love is kind....".
gwen keto I dated a guy who was “Christian” and also very abusive and controlling. When I called him out on his hypocrisy he would talk about how the Bible demands that wives honor their husbands and women are subservient to men, that a woman’s place is in the home, blah blah blah. He had Bible versus to back this up as well. And I do not believe that every Christian believes that, there are just people that take it and run with it to use it in the way they please, as with many religions. However, the versus listed in this thread are not specific to women. Besides versus about mothers, I’m not sure if there is anything in the Bible that is specific to honoring women. And if all the versus that Handmaids Tale uses are true Bible versus there are some awful ones.

She was great in "Mad Men" too.Similar situation with sexual harassment and sexism.
I don’t know how she could possibly get a good night’s sleep and not have PTSD!
You should watch her in Top of The Lake: China Girl too!!!

Joseph Fiennes and his brother Ralph do have a gift for playing villains....
Telluwide He who must not be named!
Amon Göth
Joseph himself has a knack for playing villainous religious figures as well
I didn't realize he was Voldemort's brother!
They kind of have evil looks about them huh lol
It's amazing that such a sweet man plays such a despicable character.
He seems so kind and even gentle in real life. Proves his immense talent as an actor, he's able to so convincingly portray the exact opposite!
The Fiennes brothers are absolutely gorgeous
They are *fienne* one could say...
They are eighth cousins to English royalty.
I must be in the minority.
I love them
Ja!
"I just binged watched the show". "What a constitution". That is the most British response.
what does that means plz?
Lobna Ajj I guess we’ll never know
If I had to guess, "What a constitution" is a British way of saying "Wow, you're emotionally tough".

Well, surely not the americans, though.
RM W. He's British.
