It's interesting to see their work now that they are solo artists and what they each brought to the band. Personally I prefer Lee's albums over Thurston's but I like the both.
All of them are icons. Without thurston’s guitar playing SY would sound like a complete different band. Both are two of the most original guitarists in the history of rock music. They completed each other.
I absolutely love these "Whats in my bag" videos. They help me when im at the record store just like the grocery store and have no clue what to get. And Lee is cool too
I had the pleasure of being stuck in a Post Office line with Lee many years ago when I lived in NYC and got to talk with him for about 15 minutes or so about music and touring. This was when the WTC was still standing (I worked in Building 5) and Sonic Youth had their studio not too far away (Thurston also stopped in my store but I didn't get to talk to him other than to thank him for coming in). Pretty nice guy; I miss that band.

I have seen Sonic Youth I guess 6 times playing in Vera Groningen. I was a stage builder in Vera Groningen and we were often allowed to talk to artists upstairs. A friend and I were sitting at the table with Lee Renaldo and Thurston Moore once and Lee asked me what I had in my bag. It was an LP from The Wipers.
I remember walking into Parrot Records in Colchester, England, and my mate Nigel saying you have got to listen to this as he thrust No New York into my hands. I still have my imported copy I bought that day, one of the best LPs ever.

I had the chance to talk to Lee once at a meet and greet after the Atlanta show on the Murray St. Tour. He was such a nice guy, and very engaged with everything I had to say!
Lee’s comment about the people on the back of No New York looking as if they came out of an insane asylum to me summed up that era out the punk scene in general. My first encounter with punks here in Hollywood just blew my mind! They looked absolutely psycho … and threatened to cut off my long hair! But instead of detesting them I wanted to know more about them. Within months I cut my own hair off and was going to as many shows as I could. Simply because I had never seen or heard anything so different from what was “normal”. And you were instantly labeled a weirdo for admiring punk. Sign me up!
Met him at 3rd St Jazz & Rock(R.I.P.) in Philly along with Thurson. They were there for a Goo record signing & played the Troc that night. First time i saw them. Myind blown, ears forever altered. Thurson said thanks for coming and signed the lp card/poster. Lee did too but was also smiling and nicer. He also signed the poster "Goo to you. Lee." I had that on the wall at my folks until i moved out full time ten years later. SY forever! 🤘😎

For some reason I used to give more attention to Thurston, probably just because he presents himself that way - but Lee is the real icon.
