    Hey Jerad. Been watching you for years on my other channels. where I didn’t create anything. This is the one that I will be using for sharpening and other things. You are the one who has taught me the most. You’re on live now, got to sign up-can’t believe I haven’t done that yet! You’re the master of freehand!! I have learned more from you than anyone else, but you can always pick up little bits and pieces from different people, but you have put it all together the best for me to learn by, and I have been sharpening freehand for about forty years, first starting with a Buck 110 on a cheap oil stone. My grandfather taught me first and he was a master of all lot of things. He was a master plumber and self employed, he was also a carpenter and homebuilder, he painted steel on oil refineries high up in Galveston, Texas before moving to Alabama where he learned carpentry and plumbing and got his master plumbers license. He then packed up the family and moved to Alaska. He lived in log cabins in Anchor Point and Homer before homesteading a piece of land in Kenai, in a house he built himself-an A-frame that he eventually added on to. I remember you talking about your father and other family being in the trades too, and how that’s what you had done before your channel took off. And I think that I told you that my grandfather was a master at nearly everything but not knife sharpening! Although I do remember him telling me nope, I had rounded the edge! Lol Man, that was a long time ago. I worked construction and was a backhoe and heavy equipment operator before getting into plumbing where I messed up my back.
    Best to you and your lovely wife Kara,
    Rob, a.k.a., CatoctinPatriot , from the Catoctin Mountain/Blue Ridge Mountains

    Man, this is by far the single best sharpening tutorial anywhere on the web. I had trouble keeping my fingers from bleeding at first due to new diamond stones. Thankfully, that hasn’t been an issue now that they have broken in. I have used this technique for the past couple of week, and it’s made a huge difference in bevel consistency, thus sharpness. I’m still having to work extra hard right at the very tip; my finger wants to leave the stone (on pull stroke) and thumb wants to lay flat (on push stroke) when I get to tippy tip on knives with big bellies. But, overall, this is a game-changer on how to train yourself on getting a consistent edge from heel to tip. Really appreciate you sharing.

    To everyone here for the first time seeking a new voice after a lot of frustration; this video and his other complete guide to freehand are all you need. After years of accumulating a knife collection that was catching dust with a dull edge (extremely sad situation), I tried to learn 2 separate times over the years, and ended up throwing all the associated tools out the window after hours doing more damage than anything else on the knives that were my sacrificial lambs. With this above video and a single over nighter of almost non stop practice with my wife crappy kitchen knives while the kids were sleeping, and Inside the following 5days I had sharpened almost half my collection, all the kitchen knives and even put an absolutely perfect full polish up to 10 000grit on a D2 folding knife which is apparently a difficult steel for beginners to do perfectly.
    ✋ Stop looking, you have found the last video you’ll need to transform edges into mirrors!

    BEST FREEHAND TUTORIAL! Love the sharpie line trick! haven't seen that before with "copying" the marking onto thumb for reverse passes. I'm very new at this and just got my first of MANY knives (pockets, chefs, and general kitchen knives) to a polished, hair whittling edge after about 30 mins on 4 stone and a strop. It took so long as I was messing up my angles on the coarser grits when using a pyramid angle finder for beginning references. Excited to try this method right now actually on another one of my cheaper pockets. Cheers!

    I have guides that do the very same thing. Dial up angle clamps are brilliant and they also have rollers on bearings.
    But if you do not have the equipment this gentleman has the right idea.
    I myself sharpen with the original direction of the grind.
    If you are experienced enough you can try the Ken Onion designed Worksharp. I personally am not a huge fan of these type of sharpeners if something goes slightly wrong your blade will pay the price.
    Another personal favorite is Spydercos sharp maker ceramic. Spyderco makes great ceramics Japan stones also really can put on a very keen edge. Diamond sharpeners are okay in my opinion if you have just regular old knives or kitchen knives. Diamond removes materials fast. Where diamond stones work well is if you are using the knife for cutting boxes or rope. It sharpens and under magnification you will see a jagged edge.
    Ceramics can put a mirror edge on knives.
    How experienced you are can make or break a edge.

    I think I heard you say in another video that you did but aren't sure; do you do knife sharpening service? I just picked up the Lionsteel M1 fixed blade thatI want the edge reprofiled. Normally paying someone to do it would be a non starter, and this the second M1 I've owned as well as an M4, and I handled those myself. The difference in this case is that this was a limited run they did using CMP M4 Tool steel. They M390 is supposed to have an HRC of 59-61, while the M4 is 65-66HRC. The M390 was already a difficult steel to work with, but I also had access to a friend's equipment that made it easier, and I won't have access this time around. Plus the M4 is a bit more ambitious than I'm prepared to do at the moment.
    I figured that once I have the right edge on the M4-tool steel, stropping and cleaning up the edge now and then should be good for a while.
    Plus I've seen the edges you put on and you definitely do a better job than I can.
    (If you mention that you DO do sharpening in this video, I just haven't started watching it yet, I just went and looked for one of you sharpening videos to pose the question).

    Great technique, although you really want to keep a puddle (yes, an actual puddle) of krud kutter/something similar on the stone to lubricate and collect the metal shavings, especially on expensive stones like these. Can’t wait to give this finger marking trick a try today! I’m getting much better but still have some consistency issues from side to side, so hoping your method might be the magic I need. Question: Do the plates not destroy your marked finger and thumb as you continue to drag across those diamonds? I know I’ve torn my finger up once just by scrubbing it pretty hard to remove some grit. Didn’t know it was doing damage till it started bleeding!

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have definitely done that, but just let your finger gently go across the stone, when you put the mark on just set your finger there, but when you start to sharpen just let you finger glide without pressure. And this trick will most definitely make your bevels consistent. Just try to replicate the same movements, and with the finger guide it helps you feel the little movements you make like when getting to the tip

    • @MrEric0822
      @MrEric0822 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NeevesKnives Great, thanks! I just resharpened a kitchen knife. Found that the "thumb side" was a little more difficult to maintain, and I discovered that I laid it back a little more on that side compared to the other side. But both bevels were consistent from heel to tip, and the knife came out sharp. I think I will get better with more practice, but having your finger/thumb glide across while maintaining contact with the stone along the entire edge does seem like a really good technique in order to achieve consistency. I'm guessing if your finger or thumb comes off the stone at any point, then you have changed angle.

    Very good info on sharpening a knife. Would you do the same thing at bottom by plunge as the tip. Especially if there is no sharpening choil? Do you use any water or oil on the stones??

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do the back and forth motion at the heal of a knife with no choil just like I showed with the choil but watch it a little closer so you can make sure you hit it consistently. And I use these ones dry but you can use water, I have other stones that I use a soap and water mix as my oil and then I use just water on my water stones. If you want me to send you a quick clip on Instagram on how to do the heal on a no choil like spyderco, or email. Or tell me the knife and I will find my most similar and send a clip if you need it

    I really gotta get a few nice big stones. Right now I’m sharpening with a diamond rod, a piece of ceramic tile, and a piece of leather belt with a mixture of green buffing compound and toothpaste applied to it. No angle guides, or clamps. I just hold everything in my hands and eyeball it. I get razor sharp edges that I could shave with, but it takes me about an hour to fully sharpen a pocket knife (10-15 minutes to re-sharpen). A good set of stones would cut that time down, and a sharpening system with guide rods would make perfect edges, but unfortunately, I have more time to spare than money. My current “sharpening kit” cost me about $12.
    Thanks for the guide though, If I get a stone large enough to do this with, I’m gonna try it.

    Do you have to have a honing rod and strop or just one or the other? Do you just Hone and strop in between sharpenings? I’m ordering some stones tomorrow and want to know if I should order a ceramic rod with my strop as well.

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should have both, so if you barely used your knife then just strop, if the strop isnt doing justice then hone and strop, after doing that a bunch of times and its not doing any justice time to sharpen, it also works great for deburring an edge when sharpening, you always want to have very very light pressure almost none at all

      I agree with that so much, another guy said it perfectly, if your not still learning then your doing something wrong. And theres so much from different stones and steels, to even different grit patterns and edges, Ive even gotten into the differences in the way you remove your burr. In this video Im trying to show an easy way for people to get a screaming sharp edge, but I obviously do things differently depending on what im sharpening or the edge im trying to put on

    • @NeevesKnives
      @NeevesKnives  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If your having a problem seeing a shadow you can do one of two things, look for the edge to reflect back at you at the heal, or just pick an angle and dont think to hard about it, basically just attempt to match it up but it wont matter if your slightly off, as long as you stick with the angle you pick until its finished. And yes I always get a burr from every stone. Its ok to have a very small burr, that way your losing less steel. It will be way easier to get a burr on all the higher grits if you get a burr from heal to tip off your first stone, with each side you do
