- With only 2 days left on our walk on The West Highland Way today we finally come to Devil's staircase. We've heard of this from other walker's but have, oddly enough, been looking forward to the climb. We like a good challenge and the views from the top are spectacular!

The toughest part isn't the Devil's Staircase but the climb out of Kinlochleven. Not to be underestimated!
I don’t want it to end either. Lovely cinematography and enjoying your journey so much. Love hearing both of you viewpoints and it’s so calm and beautifully respectful between the two of you.
I think you will love the Great Glen Way which will be next! :) We actually enjoyed it more than this trail though both are spectacular (Scotland is such a treasure). See you soon :)
Feeding my memories every step of your way. I agree The Devils is not the most difficult but definitely the most stunning section with Rannoch Moor not far behind. The hardest remains Rowardennan north to Ardlui. Congrats on your fantastic shoot and editing. Beautiful 😍
Absolutely gorgeous cinematic masterpiece my friend. These b-roll shots are somehow full of emotion!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for the sweet memories. I started that stage from the mountain resort, leaving at 7:00 am. It was cloudy, but peaceful. The staircase wasn't half as bad as I thought it would be, and the feeling of being alone in "real" nature, after it, was awe inspiring I'd say I found serinity there
Another great episode! I think Brian said what I’ve now concluded, that it’s not the climbs that are hard, it’s the rocks underfoot! Definitely was a section where the challenge in our head of the Staircase could play games with our body’s ability to complete the walk. FYI- We averaged 4-5km/h on The Way. I like your open, thoughtful, reflective moments and this has helped me relive the experience as well as stay more active since coming home from Scotland. I had exactly the same feeling of sadness going into Kinlochleven, that the next day, the walk would be over. I am privileged, however, to live in a small Ontario town, Fergus, settled by Scots, which hosts one of the largest Scottish festivals in North America, held this weekend. With pipers and Gaelic and Celtic music everywhere, and great memories of this walk, this part of North America remains very peaceful, just like the Highlands. Looking forward to the last episode!
Oh my...so majestic! I think I just added Scott land to my bucket list! My hear literally lept from the views from the staircase! Yum yum! ✌️
I remember a moment long ago in the Scottish highlands when I felt filled to the brim with all that rustic beauty and I could barely take it in. A moment of pure happiness that made my eyes well up. You brought that back to me ! The soundtrack was perfect ! Thank you 🙏💕🌷
We are glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome videos guys, you two are a fantastic team , thanks for all the hard work you have done , I am doing it next week for the first time ❤
Best of luck!
I discovered you about one week ago and you are both in inspiration for me! You inspire me to get out of my confort zone in many ways in my life and I want to thank you for that. You have so much positivity no matter what happening and that’s the road I want to take to. I wish you the best for the rest of you’re trip! Thank you ❤❤❤❤ from Canada (Québec)😊
Yay, thank you!
Scotland belongs to us all 🏴🇺🇸💯
As a Scot i agree with you Billy we truly love the beauty of our Country so why not share it with the rest of the world..
Yes 👍🏴🇺🇸💯💥
Nearly there. Woohoo. You must try a cold glass of Iron Bru. You will love it. Especially after a long day.
What a beautiful day! That was one of my favorite days, too. The Devil's Staircase is really not bad and the views are amazing! We took our time, took lots of pictures and chatted with other walkers. Unfortunately, when we got to the top it was VERY windy and we couldn't stay up there long. I loved the charming little village of Kinlochleven.
The best!
Makes me want to book a trip there soon! I really appreciate all the tips you give. I am a novice & find them so helpful! Blessings to you!
You are so welcome!
We leave for WHW in 1 month. Your videos have been very helpful
Glad they are helpful!
Have fun 😀
Love the vids. What are you carrying though your bags are huge?
Glad you like the videos!
We each had:
1 pair of breathable shoes
1 pair of waterproof shoes
1 pair of flip flops (sandals)
Packed lunch
3 liters of water
Rain coat
Fleece
Long sleeve shirt
Matches/lighter
Flashlight
Knife
Foot care supplies
Toilet paper
Plastic bag for used 🧻
Trek poles
Extra socks
Pants/ shorts
The weather changes constantly and you sometimes have to make multiple wardrobe changes during the day.
Some times our days are 12 hours long depending on what we’re doing.
You have to be ready for what Scotland’s weather throws at you!
As far as drying sweaty shoes goes: put a tea bag inside- it will draw the moisture out of the shoe. Probably won’t help with wet shoes though 🙃
that is a great idea! I think I remember hearing someone talk about that. I think if we put in a very aromatic tea we would also have really nice smelling feet too! #highhopes 😆
@@vanhallaadventures The wonders of tea never cease to surprise me 😉
B is really getting the hang of long distance hiking! 😊 he was cruising on the devils stairs passage! Well done 👏 💪p.s. I echo your thoughts on the US.
Thanks 👍
Great video, I’ve done the west highland way twice now. I’m from Edinburgh and we did it north to south. The climb from kinloch to the top of the staircase is worse than going up the staircase. The part I hated the most both times was the east side of Loch Lomond.
Thanks guys. I haven’t done the walk but pick walkers up from Glen Coe ski centre and constantly tell them the Devils staircase isn’t that bad. It was lovely to walk it with you. I totally understand the feelings you have in the area. I’m loving this series 🤗
Thank you 😊
This looks nice Crystal better than the Camino however I never see you drinking water actually now straight up I no do in fact im not unto hiking lol but loving watching you
We both drink a a lot of water!
You could extend the walk onto the Great Glen Way and then catch the train to Elgin to join the Spey Way.
Oh we are going. (not to Elgin) Great Glen Way episode will be released in 2-3 weeks. 😀
Love last episodes purchase a van idea, that's our next step...
oooh! Let us know if you do! Will you be doing it in Scotland?
@vanhallaadventures so retirement plan as we are UK, hire to try it out and UK tour, then if we do build and northern Europe, Denmark, Sweden, Norway. If more cost effective then ship van to USA for west coast tour. So several months over a couple of years...I was 60 this year, so have a couple of years to try before we buy 😀
I take an empty ice cream bucket with its lid when I go hiking in the backcountry with my husband to use as a mini-toilet then empty it in the outhouses along the way. We used to share but now we both bring our own. We can also use it to beat it to scare any dangerous wildlife away so we don’t surprise them and scare any cougars that may be stalking us. Wild animals, except rattlesnakes, have better hearing than us so making a lot of loud noise hurts their ears so they vamoose. I’m not saying that there’s bears and cougars in the Highlands because I’ve never been although I’ve been to Scotland.
Are midges similar to mosquitoes?
Midges are very tiny tiny mosquitoes.
Then can fly through most traditional screens. Also known as “no-see-ums”.
It’s a shame you didn’t recognise Ben Nevis from the top of the Devils Staircase - I believe you can see it in your video! It’s a shame because, on average, Ben Nevis summit is totally clear of cloud just twelve days a year! Never mind, you did capture it for posterity! Loving the videos, on to Fort William! (That descent into Kinlochleven is a bit of a trudge as I recall…).
P.S. The Devil’s Staircase got its name, not from the challenged hikers slogging up it, but from the poor souls tasked with building it in the first place!
Oh that's a great piece of information! Thank you for sharing Ian :)
Hi there! What app are you using that shows your progress along the trail? We're going next week! Let me know. Thx and thx for the videos!
Alltrails! You have an option of downloading the entire trail or by section. I personally liked the day by day so you had an idea of time per day, miles, etc. HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME! 🏴✌🏻
What’s the app you keep using for navigation, if I may ask? 🤔
Alltrails. It worked perfectly for this trek. Thanks for watching!
@@vanhallaadventures thank you 🙏🏻
