Yeah it’s just so wild. It was one of the first Floyd albums I got & was confused by it at first, but as the decades go by it’s become the most interesting cornerstone of any bands discography I’ve ever heard. A great colorful explosion.
It's always mind blowing to me that Piper at the Gates of Dawn was being recorded next door to the Beatles recording Sgt Peppers at the same time, and they hung out quite a bit and listened to each other's stuff, being an influence on each other. No wonder those are two of the top 10 albums ever.
Syd's "arc" was interesting; his first love was art, he then drifted into music, being responsible for two era defining singles and an era defining album, then drifted back into art. It's amost a legendary tale.
And just a few months later Norman Smith would bring the Pretty Things (legend has it they stumbled upon Ravi's sitar in a closet and managed to get some decent sounds out it for their track Death) into the same studio to record SF Sorrow giving us three of the best albums to come out of the British psychedelic era. 1, 2, and 3 in that order IMHO...
Planetary travel, cats, gnomes, bikes, I Ching, scarecrows, fairy tales, and flying by telephone. That's just Syd. Don't think there's been anything like it before or since.
@@edi99ish I saw the very last concert they played in the US... The Division Bell Tour. I was 13 and my first and still the best concert I've EVER seen in my entire 40yrs.
I'm so perplexed about this cat, I must write a song about it! And express my inability to be able to explain what perplexes me so. Genius. Utter genius.
I think Syd Barrett had the most unique style of guitar playing I’ve ever heard. During the break between the 2nd and 3rd verses he plays a few chords in a random, flippant way that doesn’t even stay in time and tempo, but he makes it sound fantastic! Ive been a guitarist for 40 + years and I wouldn’t be able to pull that off! 👍✌️🤘❤️
That bit you described reminds me of Monk's piano solo on take one of "Bag's Groove". Monk's playing was so rhythmically eclectic, Miles had to ask Monk to lay out on his solos.
If you listen to the guitar “leads” they sound like cat noises, moaning, meowing. And I think that the Bond style riff parts, are like a soundtrack of the cat, on its little cat missions. The scratching sounds, the maraca almost sounds like a cat tossing litter….
Absolutely, fabulous album, There was a radical change in the new vision of music at that time. Personally: it's part of my life. It is a fascinating universe that is always new. Good time for you
the first time I heard the album, those riffs didn't come out of my head, and neither did the weird clamor of "lucifer sam" which could be a wizard cat or a metaphor for Uncle Sam. i love syd.
It was definitely simply about his girlfriends cat, and how it got more love from her, than him “JENNIFER GENTLE, YOU’RE A WITCH” it’s pure simple genius songwriting
Lucifer Sam, Siam cat Always sitting by your side Always by your side That cat's something I can't explain...such an amazing song, Syd was really genius and this album is a masterpiece.

The intro for this song just randomly started going through my head... so I just had to give it a listen. The thing is I've only heard it a couple of times, but I still knew exactly which song the riff was from.
used to think this album was incredibly unique when i first heard it a few years ago. since then ive delved down pretty much all kinds of bands with diverse sounds from different eras, yet this album still retains an incredibly unique sound like no other. the little sounds in the background and the organ swelling in and out of the mix is just something u dont hear anywhere else really--and the structure and placement of the chorus is pretty strange too.
Piper still sounds fresh, original, and genuinely atmospheric over 50 years later. Light years ahead of anything else in late ‘66 early 67. I’d argue better than Pet Sounds or even Sgt Pepper.
Music is good but you are forgetting that the Beatles had three of the most versatile vocalists that no Floydian can hold a candle to. Besides, they experimented with many more genres within the same album, SPLHCB. Floyd's best was yet to come.
Imagine if he hadn’t suffered mentally & stayed in the group. Assuming Waters still developed his songwriting in a similar fashion, they would’ve been a 1-2 punch on the level of Lennon/McCartney. Plus having that contrast could’ve kept them fresh well into the 80s
I also like very much the prog era of the band. But actually the psychedelic period is fantastic. Furthermore, the two things blend spectacularly in at least two albums.
Nobody on here talks about how beautiful the outro keyboard sequence is. And also how fantastic Nick Masons timing is. Definitely revolutionary for it's time. Piper at The Gates of Dawn is my favorite Floyd album.

I've always loved this song. It was one of the first songs I learned to play. I did it in a Punk band where we were paid in beat downs during and after every show. I suffered more concussions than an NFL linebacker. The memories of an old man are the deeds of a man in his prime, as someone once said.
