Hi Sandy - have followed your channel since I retired three years ago. Never felt the need to comment before, but this was really thought provoking. I've been running for 37 years and never been more than a middle of the pack runner, never placed in a single race and my PB's are far behind me now. With work behind me I hit the trails every single day and when I set off today, in a still semi dark northern English morning, I remembered your words and thought I find real joy in running. I am a winner, a different kind of a winner, but nonetheless a winner. Thanks for giving me some perspective.
So sorry to hear you and Sage lost your home and possessions to fire. Glad you and Sage are physically ok. Grieving the loss is part of healing. I hope your network of friends will be give you the support you need.
Success is very different to everyone. As you get older so does the success. Now in my sixties a diabetic and multiple bypass operations just finishing is success. Accepting getting old is also critical.
At 64, I can truly relate.
I took about a forty year break from running, but have come back to it, albeit at a much slower pace, and love the feeling of discipline it takes, and daily accomplishment.
I know that the day will come when I can no longer run, so I try and enjoy every day that I can do it.

@@thomasmichaels6850 oh wow -- this is the "old guys" club -- I'm a lot younger at 56, but hated to run, now 37 or so years later -- from couch to an hour of running now --but it took me a couple of years to get here (take 2 or 3 rest days between workouts)

I'm extremely grateful for every morning I get to run. I would not be a happy runner if I had to compete in any way. I am plodding along, enjoying being outside, not giving time one thought, not training for anything. I admire those of you who push it and are continually improving, but racing would take all the enjoyment out of running for me.
Thank you for this simple but profound message. I'm in the middle of my most difficult marathon training block yet, trying to run a 2:45 marathon at 52 years old in December. I have to say that the workouts are getting to be a grind and I've been losing focus. After watching this video I'm happy to get to the track and enjoy the experience!
I sympathise with that. I used to run exactly what I had planned as long as my body allowed, not an inch more or less. Recently I started being more flexible with distance and pace so that I can do more interesting runs and run with friends. It’s been a wonderful change.
I really like that you discussed long term sustainability in running. I went through a long period of time thinking "i must run every day that i must get 85-95+ miles per week and i gotta be always focused on numbers". It led me to being so anxiety ridden and over trained with just showing up to races burnt out and sometimes injured. End up doing poorly and get so angry and frustrated at failing. Thankfully I found a way out! So much happier getting my time in but making it so much more fun!
Salida is such a special place. We never miss the Friday after Thanksgiving, downtown, taking it all in. Very encouraged to see you and Sage pouring into our incredible community.

100% agree with you re: joy. You touched on so many things that I relate to here. Music, as you know, plays a huge part for me - finding that one song that amps me up for big races and the training that goes with them. I've found my joy again after having to adjust to a new running routine. From group runs to solo runs. From runs out of town to out my front door because of commitments, I took it all for granted and didn't see the positives for a while I think. I do now, especially after periods of not being able to run at all. The joy is back baby! :)

Totally agree on the joy of doing. I stop competing in the 100 miler now, just do it for fun and actually doing much better than before. I visited Salida for the 1st time this year and love that area!!!
I have noticed you have worked on the delivery..love it...not near as many "ums" in the vids....great job!
Thanks for these insights, you are really inspiring me (both you and Sage)! I also have a joy-oriented mindset I think.
I believe that living in east Africa (Zanzibar) really helped me with that, because the Swahili people I got to know seemed to enjoy life a lot, live in the moment and at the same time they could be really tough and resilient when life demands it.
I especially enjoy hilly easy runs in the forest, so I'm currently doing a lot of base training and increasing volume. It might not lead me to fast race times as quickly as more intense training, but the rest of my life as a musician is stressful enough already. And by including double days and going beyond 100km weekly, which is my plan (currently at 80km average with 1000m vert) I still think I can get really fit. Maybe I'll transition to long mountain races like you and Sage, I live in Austria the middle of the Alps.
I come from a sprint and mid distance track backround (not very serious though :D).

I am curious about that combo. I m going to run easy flows just for fitness. Do u use a packable kayak?
@@Pinhead101 I have a packable but I use another...I think it is 9ft...easy to carry and has decent tracking. WA State (It was @ a country park with Lake and also 2.8 trail-calm and serene waters.

Watched the video and very nice of course. Evens with all of life's problems...running with Nature is always interesting with the changes of seasons and helps to keep me (us) well...grounded. As a Vet, when I go to the Doctors and see those who are less fortunate in regards to movement...it is Thanksgiving each and every day!

Your calves are incredibly strong and well shaped👍 still struggling with mine and weak ankles and feet, I wonder how I'm supposed to load those muscles when I'm running, since I feel my hips and upper legs are stronger

without watching the video, the key to success is to run easy and not injure yourself. I keep putting my body on the line and end up getting injured, taking weeks/months off

Been a grinder all my life in all I do, including running, and in my later years I have learned to try have a more joyful outlook.
