OMG Z , I bought this Black Ice preamp after seeing this video, haven't even tweaked it yet, IT"S AMAZING out of the box, I just dropped it in place of my Denefrips Athena , the SOUNDSTAGE is AMAZING, & only have front two speakers on it so far, will connect two more on the weekend, cannot even imagine what that will be like, ...thanks for reviewing it, bringing it to my attention, this absolutely ROCKS even as a two channel preamp, four must be mind blowing. WOW

I bet a Quadraphonic Who or pink Floyd vinyl would sound amazing using that. You should def seek out a Quadraphonic cut vinyl and test it out. I bet it would be amazing. You would have to do some searching but yea they are still out there...Hard to find but they do exist.

    • @evanars1
      @evanars1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If a quad mix is good you would want to listen to it in quad, and not go quad to stereo and then back to quad. All bets are off if the quad mix isn't good.

For the quad records, i think they were for dedicated amps, i think one could also buy a decoder at the time, but this amp only accepts stereo so its a synthetic quad upscale......
Sorry guys.... maybe they might bring a dedicated circuit out for a quad encoded record for the phono circuit on another switch lol, im sure the designe is still floating around somewhere and would definitely add alot of uniqueness to this amp being the only one, plus maybe a dbx? circuit for the tape recorder which added extra fidelity, and i think for records.... it was a long time ago, technomoan did videos on quad records and dbx if i remember?.....
Aqesome piece of kit, lets see how the price goes....?.....

In the mid 1970s quadraphonic sound promised concert hall realism. I watched it evolve from 1964 when Stereo Review Magazine published an article suggesting connecting a rear speaker between the two hot legs of a stereo amplifier. David Hafler connected two speakers in series that way and quadraphonic sound was born. In the 1970s the industry took the process to the preamplifier signal level with all kinds of tricky phase circuits. Thee was also four track four channel tape and the RCA outband for the rear channels in their CD4 process.
So I built one and it stank. That's when already an experience engineer I knew everyone in this industry was full of ^%*%$&$&. I'd been to many live concerts, heard lots of live music as well as recorded music, and quadraphonic sound wasn't anything remotely like the real thing. Neither is 5.X channel SACD/HT which I view as son of quad, and its derivatives like Dolby Atmos and others I consider grandsons of quad.
As an engineer I took on the challenge and solved it. It's not an easy problem. I even patented one variant of the solution. There was no interest in it and it might be impossible to turn into a commercial product. Having met, or read, or seen, the top gurus in this industry I've concluded that they are all clueless.

I guess you watched whilst utube encoded the video, they gwt so many uploads, and they have to upscale content and voice match...... im luck tho, i watch on phone as i have a slow internet service where anything above 480p locks up,..... so i watch at that level and on my small screen lol.....
Regarding your exploits, i hope you patented your designe, and maybe it might be worth it now with the "resurgence" to contact this amp manufacturer, and wxplain as much to them....... im sure there would be interest, and if your hardware could correctly decode those records, i guess with todays parts and engineers, something could be worked out?...... i know there would be huge interest, or even we might see products with your name on them as these records still exhist, and would be the next step forward in the vinyl resurgence..........
In any case, thanks for the info, and good luck, if not for you then the money would be usefull to your family and those that you love.......
Take care, and all the very best....

@@mohammedisaa9952 Thank you for your comments. Yes my design is patented. It is US Patent 4,332,979. If you read it ignore the first three figures. They relate to a different invention and should have been deleted. It is written in a kind of techno-legalese typical of patents. I invented the idea in March 1974, 49 years ago and I've been experimenting with it ever since. The patent was issued in 1982 so it is expired. There's a lot of math behind it but I'm going to give you the gist of it.
The signal from the main speakers is adjusted to have flat frequency response all the way back to the recording microphones. This is necessary for this invention because all deviations are multiplied. So the main speakers generate the sound that would arrive at your ears first at a live performance. What amounts to a computer generates the necessary signals such that when they are amplified and sent to a perimeter array of small loudspeakers around the room that bounce their sound off the walls and ceiling they have the same mathematical relationship to the sound from the main speakers as the sound from the walls and ceiling in a concert hall, cathedral, opera house would have to the first arriving sound. Everything is completely adjustable. The system is first tuned to the room, about 90 adjustments which remain where they are permanently and then to each recording, about a dozen more.
Despite all of the math, all of the adjustments were made by ear using my memory of hearing many live concerts and being very familiar with the sounds of acoustic instruments heard in many places. In ways it is exactly the opposite of the way audiophiles see the problem. Audiophiles think that what's in the recording should be reproduced faithfully and that would be good enough. This invention assumes that only part of what is necessary is in the recording and the missing part has to be reconstructed from what is in the recording. Audiophiles try to eliminate the effects of the listening room. This invention uses the listening room as an indispensable part of the system creating the reflections and diffusion needed to reconstruct a sound field similar to what you'd hear live.
I have a working demonstration of concept prototype and it performs to my complete satisfaction. I'm not one for hyperbole so I'm not going to use the words that advertisers have used up for their small insignificant improvements over the decades. My main interests are classical music, jazz, and some pop and fold music if it is pleasing to my ears. I do not like what most of the market, especially the audiophile market likes even though this system works with any type of music. To the untrained eye the design is a maze of time delays, mixers, equalizers, amplifiers and speakers. They all have a purpose. Each component was chosen to perform a particular function. Once adequate for its purpose the idea audiophiles have improving performance by endlessly tweaking the designs of what they have in their systems would make no improvement to this invention so the cost was ridiculously low by audiophile standards for building the prototype. OTOH, the education that made it possible would cost probably half a million dollars if I had to buy it with today's money and four of the most grueling years of mental work studying mathematics, science and engineer I ever did in my life and worth every second of the effort. I have never worked in this industry so this is just a hobby for me. I'm too old to think about any commercial possibilities anymore.

You could run a double speaker switch backwards.....
Like normally, you can choose 1 amp and speaker set a, and speaker set b,
How about amp a, and amp b, to 1 set of speakers, now twice because its quad..... 1 doubles.....
I think emotiva sell 4 channel amps as do crown, or you could keep it at line level because its just a switch right?.....
Im already planning how to integrate this into my HT setup lol...... 🤔👍🏻👌

I used to love Marantz in the Early 2000s, not so much in the last 10 years or so but their newer stuff they seem to have found themselves again (unlike Sony) with the Cinema "XX" line. A lot of mainstream units don't even have analog mch bypass anymore so that's nice to have, especially to bring out the 7.0 for some fun. I still have mine in storage. For me the Citation 7.0 and the Proton/Aphex units were the pinnacle of analog stereo/surround logic processing. I still have my Proton SD-1000 hooked up to the analog 5.1 bypass of my Meridian 861v8 when I'm in the mood for a passive quad-like listen, with dimension control on the remote let's you turn off the center and enhance for music instead of movie logic decoding. The raw sound quality is certainly a lot nicer than most massmarket AV products with junk off the shelf chips and DSP. Similar results can also be enjoyed with old but gold stuff like the Carver H9-AV and a Rane digital delay for the rear pair, but until recently (the new Schiit product) only the Citation or Proton did it all in one box and a remote.
It's just sad how watered down DSP wise modern Atmos/DTS:X units are now a days. Big reason why I probably won't move from channel based especially since my main system is dual music/cinema use and I also care about period accurate decoding for legacy content. Not to mention total lack of music or generic content specific modes, just DSU and Neural:X now. Jack of all trades, master of none. The 7.0 is the perfect fix for that on something like a 7706 with an 8ch analog bypass. And yeah, RIP indeed. Fosgate is a legend.

Perfect surround processor for people who want to integrate their 2 channel into something like a living room. It absolutely does not replace an atmos receiver, BUT it’s for more easy to use. It’s simple and knobs are fun.

The preamp itself, in my opinion, could retail for $3500-$4000 and no one would question its value and quality. This is a bargain at $2500 for what you get. Are there better preamps? Absolutely. But I can’t see myself looking for another pre for a long time…if ever.
