I was scammed a few yuan here and there in Sanya, but nothing major and I was expecting this. Since my visit back in 2005, I've seen videos of Hainan beaches ankle-deep in rubbish from filthy Chinese tourists who don't take their crap home with them and there don't seem to be any beach cleaners. Most of my Chinese friends can't stand the place and complain that they'll never go there again. The commentator was right to point out how Southeast Asia is a more 'pleasant and affordable option.' I returned from Hainan with an ear infection from the hotel pool.

This September,2023 I drove 2700km back forth to Hainan, with two ferry trips. I cannot confirm the waste issue. No beach had piles of trash. But Chinese in general don’t pickup their,trash. Very disturbing.

Yes the price gouging in Sanya is truly horrific. I remember being quoted 10,000 kuai per night for a hotel room back in 2015 during 春节. Absolutely ridiculous and I vowed never to go there. Forget about the added parking charges at each of the resorts. I know you have to pay extra for tourist hotspots but now they have all sorts of hidden fees. I don’t mind paying but I find it really upsetting get up charged. Unfortunately, there are so many places have adopted these hidden fees. I booked a hotel room near the fisherman’s wharf in San Francisco. The advertised rate was 139 a night. I thought that was really cheap. After checking out, I ended up paying 300.
For Hotels in the US, you've got to call the hotel and ask about local taxes (not advertised) as many cities and counties charge hefty taxes on things that the locals won't necessarily feel in their wallets (to get pissed about); hotels and alcoholic drinks usually have hefty taxes attached.
Its prices are luxurious while the facilities and services aren't, if you're just a middle class earner don't go to hainan and sanya island if you don't want to get stressed, it was built for the rich people

Everything was cheaper than expected - like catching a Didi the cost never went beyong the 11rmb call out fee for a 10 minute ride. In reality Hainan's GDP growth is booming at 9.5% this year and tourists are flocking to the island again.

Im not chinese and went to sanya in 2023. It was amazing. There was never issues and never scammed. Everything was cheaper than expected - like catching a Didi the cost never went beyong the 11rmb call out fee for a 10 minute ride. Its funny how this propaganda channel talks over them so mandarin speakers cant disprove the source videos as unrelated.
Alantis is the only costly place there, and its part of an international chain.
Seafood by weight we never gor cheated. We were having lobster and crabs for under 300rmb so the first video is either an idiot or its a lie. They dont cook it until you agree to the price and they write down the agreed cost for you before cooking so you dont get cheated.
