    Very nice and thank you for sharing. I have the same tank and the same filter setup, but I have a Fluval 207 which actually pumps into a disused and unplugged Fluval 70 hang on back filter, which I have converted into media box into a marginal planter and also has stores an anoxic BCB bag. I think I'll also use it to put easily replaceable carbon and crushed coral and filter floss as well. I would turn the entire 207 canister into a BCB. I ALSO have a disused pond canister filter (good for ponds over 1000 gallons!) which is 75% washable foam media and 25% bio pellets - I removed the bio pellets and put three more BCB bags. The tank is about 5 weeks old. I'm REALLy looking forward to how it performs!!
    (It's well planted 20 gallon long with lots of plants and a bubble wall. About a dozen green neon tetras (smaller than blue neon tetras), 5 zebra danios, a male betta, 6 pygmy Cory, a half small shrimp and some snails. it's overstocked but I was ready! Goal: no water changes at all!!!

    My take away, as a novice to anoxic filtration (wanting it to work) is that some fish died and plant growth was actually slow which is opposite to what I've listened to so far.
    Back in the day, UGF filters were never regarded as good for plants. I'm not seeing the change to that yet?

    You said it best- do the “anoxic” filtration yourself and measure the difference in nitrates (assuming you have the same fish and tank size and no plants). You’ll see like most people find out is that there’s no difference in the rate of your weekly accumulation of nitrates. Under gravel filters and kitty litter baskets work just fine for beneficial bacteria- no different than any other medium in my opinion. But the claims of significant measurable denitrification by Novak doesn’t occur.

    Would you please explain how anoxic filtration works? I don't think the Dr. Fully explains how it works or how to do it.

    • @ModMINI
      @ModMINI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nutshell: In normal filters live bacteria which turn fish waste into ammonia and nitrite before ending up as nitrate, which is less toxic to fish but still must be dealt with. Too much nitrates is toxic to the fish and can cause algae to grow as well. The only way to get rid of it is plants and water changes but plants by themselves can't handle all the nitrates. Dr. Novak found that a different kind of bacteria grows when there's not much oxygen in the water. They take the nitrogen out of of the nitrates and release it as a gas, which just slowly bubbles out of the aquarium. This is done by moving water slowly around layers of baked clay, which is where the bacteria would grow. So the remaining nitrates are basically turned into nitrogen gas or plant mass. If done well, it might be possible to maintain a steady state ecosystem.

      That's because anoxic bacteria take the oxygen from phosphate leaving you with phosphorus. Anoxic zones are only lacking free oxygen O2 but oxygen is still there in molecular compounds. The aquarium industry knows these things but it doesn't make money the same as selling filter cartridges. Water treatment plants have been using, aerobic, anaerobic, and anoxic bacterias to clean water to be potable again for quite a long time.

    The amount of plants compared to your stocking amount would make you think it'd be 0 nitrates without the anoxic. I haven't seen any one do an anoxic without a lot of plants to test if the anoxic is actually doing the trick.

      What matters is how many fish are in your tank, and how much they weigh. i.e. how much food do you feed them a day. If there are only a few fish in your tank, then what you say doesn't prove anything

    • @kamelladys

      @@football4.069 before i had the filter, nitrates would increase at 10 ppm weekly. After i added the filter and it started woking as it should, nitrates dropped to zero and stayed there. No other conditions were changed. Fish load, food, light, plants, all the same. I controlled other factors so only the filter was changed. It does work if you get it right.

      @@football4.069 a simple hang on back filter. It's a 10 gallon tank so didn't do anything fancy. When i tried the anoxic filter i put it inside a canister filter and used a valve to slow the flow down.
      The anoxic is not a cure all though. It worked well to control nitrates, but you can still get plenty of algae due to other factors. Size is also a factor. The filter that worked on the 10 gallon was not big enough to eliminate all the nitrates from a 30 gallon tank. The best it did was to hold the nitrates down. I since tore down the 30 gallon and put a plenum in the substrate to see how well that works. That was 4 weeks ago so I'm still waiting for the bacteria to mature.
