I'll recommend to you what I learned in my home design classes. If you don't have a bedroom downstairs, make sure you have a room that can be converted to bedroom use and a have a bathroom on the sane floor. This is in case someone becomes ill or injured or an elderly parent to care for that cannot climb stairs. It needs to be easily accessible for a wheelchair and/or crutches. Believe me, you never know when this may be needed. 😊
Two stories of couple friends who moved to farms: 1. Bought a houseboat to live in while building their house on a lakefront farm, then sold the houseboat. 2. Built an apartment inside an existing barn, then rented it out after building their house. There are so many different ways to to accomplish it. :-)
We found our 100 yr old stove on Facebook marketplace also for literally a fraction of the price of a new one. People are just nasty and envious. She is wise!! We should have lived on property, but lots of things contributed to us renting for a year, which wasn't ideal but it's OK at least we learned a great lesson and our kids will have an easier time if they ever decide to do this. Love that they give out the floorpan!
Thanks Lisa for bringing Natalie on! I just found her 2 days ago. My husband and i are dreaming of living mortgage free and looking at different options. When i found Natalie i fell in love with her home. Its beautiful! Just the inspiration i needed.
The first home we ever had together when we got married (88) was 720 square feet until 2003 when we put a second story on it. At that time we had all six of our children, ages 3-13. I don’t think of a building that size as a shed, so much as a home. Of course throughout history many families have had homes much smaller than most living rooms of today.
I hope to one day live on some land and this would be such a great way to build a small home. I am about to graduate high school and then go to the community college for free. I have been thinking a lot about the future and I am planning to work for a couple years after college living like I'm broke while still living at home to save up enough to get a piece of land. I showed the shed tour videos to my mom and she loved this. I will hopefully do something like this in the future.
Just gonna say it... every time I hear that boys need their "privacy" all I can think is that these people are more concerned for protecting perverted habits that they deem "normal". Sorry not every family sees that as normal and its kinda gross when people tell other families that they need to think about their "privacy" and are genuinely bothered by it. Also, not everyone wants their teens to be "typical", locked away in their room.. living online or through video games. Those stereotypes are sad, so good for these moms that are more proactive in their family values ❤️
I agree. My husband grew up in one room with five boys and I thought that was so smart, we're doing it ourselves. We only have three boys, but they get to share a room.
Yes! My grandmother had 4 boys and 6 girls and my mother grew up in a one room (!) house (the outhouse and kitchen were outside). They all survived and back then certain things were considered sinful and unacceptable. All my uncles (and aunts and mother) got married and had successful lives.
I believe my kids are allowed to privacy, porn or “self exploration”has nothing to do with it. They do know privacy is a privilege though. No internet or devices in the bedrooms. We have 4 kids and they love each other but would go nuts if they had to be with each other constantly. Good for those whose kids can hang out 24/7, that’s just not us. 😂
We started out with a mobile home then we built a basement. We lived in the basement for 7 years before building the house on top. It was a great option for us. We did it gradually so it was easily paid for.
Perfect timing! We are about to move to my family farm that has just been sitting and have been planning to do a diy or partial diy build of some sort.. on a budget... Hopefully debt free 🫠 we are a growing family of 6, i think we are leaning towards a container home of some sort
My parents bought a $300 trailer in the late 80s to live in while they built their house. We lived in the basement while the upstairs was being finished. I don’t know if this is a good or bad sign but I was 6 or 7 and don’t remember this at all. And it was probably at least a year of living like this.
I took a peek at the shed and it is beautiful! It looks like more than 750 sq. feet. We have a pole barn, half is garage/shop and the other half is living quarters. Each half is 750 sq. feet. This is just a weekend getaway. We love it. No mortgage!😊
My dad built 3 apartments on our old farm property, many years ago, out of all the little outbuildings. We rented those apartments out for many years, until 2 of them were destroyed by Hurricane Irene. I still have a barn apt and half of my old Victorian house is an apt, and rented out. This is how I pay my bills, along with my Social Security, now that I'm 74. I'm definitely curious about checking out the tiny house plans, to build something out of the floodplain here on my Vermont property. Thank you for this video!🌻
Our family also always have a bunch in a row. I think having mainly boys is common in my family. I have three boys, but my mom had two boys and a girl, as did both of her sisters. Their mom had three boys and three girls. My great-grandma had 6 boys and 2 girls. Most of my cousins have three boys or two girls and a boy, two have three girls. I'll stop here since I have 44 first cousin (7 are step-cousins I've known my entire 41 years of life, but my aunt and uncle were married over forty years until my uncle's death so I consider my uncle's kids my cousins, but I only brought up blood relations above - they had a total combined 10 kids). This was an interesting conversation and I think it is unique to do what Natalie did. She brought great information to the table. I have only ever had one bathroom shared with everyone in my home, but the idea of having more than one bathroom would be lovely. I have never owned property at all, but this is intriguing.
I'm looking for the link for the calendar that Lisa mentioned in a recent episode (either here or on the FOB channel). It was made by one of her friends. Does anybody have the link? Thank you so much!
I'm pausing the video early in around the 10 minute mark to say this-little boys grow into big boys and big boys NEED privacy. (Saying this to you both as the mother of boys.) Pre-puberty is bad enough, but teenagers, 5 in one room-the smell alone would kill you! 😂. Ok, I'm being funny with that comment but, please know I am very serious about them needing privacy. It's important.
My six brothers loved sleeping in one room together, and their room wasn't stinky. My brothers also happen to not get as sweaty as some men when they sleep, which helps.
This cottage is simply stunning! We have been looking into our options for mortgage free living- I appreciate this chat! Thank you ladies!

What a fantastic episode! I just love the shed build and finding out some questions that I also had was great!
Great interview! Fun to dream about all the possibilities. Natalie, your home is so beautiful and peaceful!

Still in high school and making so many plans for your future. Very impressive!
That is such a great plan and you are so smart to think ahead!

LOVE this shed home. I could totally live in!
I’ve been obsessed with the shed to home conversion! For two years, I’m trying to warm my husband up too it.

In WY we call it a “shome”.❤

My grandpa lived in a shop building while establishing our farm and building his farmhouse. This wasn't uncommon in years past.
Great show, thanks!

Our bank gives personal loans. So you can get two, one per working parent and get it done faster.

How do you stay so small with all your pregnancies 😊
I think she must burn a ton of calories by being on the go every single day from morning to night :)
I don't understand the criticism! Yeah it wouldn't be for me, but if it works for you, fantastic!
Most michigan counties won't allow that😢
that is hard when you live in a highly regulated state

I'm guessing they need internet access along with this desperately needed privacy
@@ekatrinyainternet in their rooms? No way.
The kids grow and then they no longer love to sleep together.
