1.5 months ago found spider mites, mealies, and 1 thrip, took 2.5 days to treat my whole collection, last week, found green aphids, whiteflies and more mealies, another 3 days of treating rinsing and cleaning… sigh, my collection is all in one space, my body aches lol I hear ya girl!!

Yes sadly. It’s really been the only pest I’ve had bad. The thing that finally stopped them was a homemade mixture of Castile soap and water, dish soap, essential oils. Fern made a similar mix recently. It can damage sensitive new leaves, I did lose the odd plant because of spraying my whole collection but honestly worth it. I also obsessively would check my entire collection and squish any thrips I saw. It’s not fun, good luck

I will say there is life after thrips and I’m seeing beautiful new leaves now 💚🌱Whew that is tough! Yeah I went through this a few years ago when I just started collecting and it took out like 10 plants fast! I didn’t learn my lesson bc a few months ago I got them again… someone said look for “rusty” looking spots or whole leaf and that’s exactly what tipped me off! Its terrible and I’m still just spraying down my each week just to make sure it’s so labor intensive but worth it to use systemic I learned my lesson Mother Nature 😊

Hi Joy. I can feel your pain and frustration through my phone screen. This was me a few months ago. I was so gutted. Like you I wanted them gone what immediately what worked for me in 2 days was Cutter flea and tick spray that you use to treat the lawn. It was a very non traditional approach. The plants have ALL bounced back with most importantly NO THRIPS. As well, I was very aggressive with cutting off affected leaves. Best of luck, as one other viewer said “there is life after thrips”.

Uuugh, I feel for you.. thrips are the worst! They are the pain of my planthobby existence. Hope that the treatments do their job well. Looking with a flashlight for thrips is my favorite way to spot them, the larvae can hide very well.
On a side note, may I ask which mic you are using? ☺️

I got thrips for the first time a couple months ago too! I found the similarly to you and they were in every room that I have plants. 😝 I ended up getting them gone in a month! Added systemic to all of them and cleaned them like crazy with insecticidal soap. I treated every plant in the shower and left them there for 2 weeks and cleaned them once a week. I check every day now because I’m scare they’re not gone, but haven’t seen a single one in a couple of months now! Good luck! You will get through this!

They are the worst so sorry! I’ve stopped buying monsteras since thrips have taken down some of my beautiful large specimens. They love philodendrons as well. Personally I wouldn’t bother keeping the dark lord 😢 the infestation looks too far gone, hopefully the albo is salvageable… I had some adult thrips popping up randomly back in the summer and I started using Doktor Doom thrip killer and I think it helped a lot, I never got any larvae after that. Sending you strength! 🙏🏼

Oh noooo!!! I feel so bad for you!!☹☹ I can only imagine....I have never had thrips either in my collection and just thinking about it is overwhelming because I have a lot of plants too! I appreciate so much how you stayed calm even though I can tell you are upset. You just rolled up your sleeves and got down to business!! Also thank you for showing so clearly what they look like...if I get them I will know how to identify them. Don't get discouraged, you got this girl!! You'rer staying calm and doing what you have to do!! I know you will nip it in the bud and come out on top!! This too shall pass!!( I may have missed it but where do you think they might have came from? A new plant?)

I have them right now too. I've had some thrips problems with some specific cacti and I thought I beat them, but I just spotted a few again. I just don't have the bandwidth to deal with them so i'm treating with isopropyl alcohol, and I have an order of beneficial mites coming in a few days. That way the mites can hopefully keep them away for awhile.

I had thrips too this summer (haven't seen any for a while now). I bought thrips predatory mites, nematodes and treated the plants with a pesticide and leaf coat. Thrips loves a dry environment at around 27 degrees celcius, so try to avoid this. Also if the affected plants are not unique or special to me, then I will just throw them away. I have also read that thrips have a larvae state where it lives in the soil for a while, so if you grow in hydroponics or pon, you will stop the circle much easier aswell.

so sorry this happening to you! esp at this time of year. a pest outbreak is not fair lol. I've never battled thrips, but my collection isn't too big (only around 60 plants). I have dealt with spider mites, which is why I don't keep philodendron around anymore. 😂😂I've also had scale, but they are pretty picky about which plants they infect and don't usually affect the growth of the plant or spread that easily. It's so awesome that you're willing to share your struggles. Now I know what signs to look for and at least the first few steps to take if this ever happens. Good luck!

i just recently got my first bout of thrips as well i treated w 90% alcohol diluted in water (3 oz alcohol to 12 oz of water) and treating daily to every few days and it has definitely gotten them under control. i’ve seen a few here or there since but just spray every time i spot them and haven’t had any major damage or losses

OH NO!!!that is the worst. I JUST yesterday found out that my GIANT monstera has them too. It is in my bedroom and i have over 50 Anthuriums and 20 monsteras in my living room. I could cry and have a panic attack.
i hear the they grow in the tissue of the plants, last time i had them they decimated my monsteras.... Go for the chemical products first. GOOD LUCK to you. I am with you in this 🖤

I order 2Xs beneficial mites 2 months ago …. $200 later. This week I had to replanted all plants (75approx) most in pon self watering pot to soil and new Canadian Tire green plastic pots. Caught up yesterday with everything. You need a good microscope to see youngins. All the best. Thrip get used to what you use repeatedly.

Yea I’m going through it also on my syngonium plants. Had to order predatory mites for them. They are $$$ plus a shipping charge. Also put on my Thai plants and my also for precaution. Had thrips on them before. I see black thrips not white. I don’t even know if the bugs are alive in the packets. Good luck with your plants.

Yep. I also recently battled thrips when I saw my Monstera Albo leaf looking brown like yours. Captian Jack's concentrate mixed with water is what I used. And over the long run, it's SO much cheaper! And systemic granuals, too. How's it been since you treated?

  • @lilyypotter

I dealt with thrips this summer and I was able to treat them the same way you are doing now: cut off all damaged leaves, put systemic granules in soil, wash the leaves with water and spray captain jack weekly. It was a lot of work but I'm happy they I saved my monstera and it's thriving now. Good luck!! 🙏

I know thrips suck, but they can be beaten!
What I did when I had my big infestation is I washed all the plants with dish soap (using my hands and getting into all the crevices), left it on for 10 minutes and then washed the plants with hot water, this will get rid of a lot of them, then I used some hardcore chemical treatment, I even put it in the soil, washed the furniture they are on, washed all the cover pots with soap and thats about it. I did this in parts, every day I did one plant corner so it’s not that overwhelming. The chemical stuff gets into the plant and they should die when they bite into it. You probably won’t see them after, but you should definitely do this whole process once or twice again (after two weeks I think) to be really sure.
I really recommend doing this to ALL of your plants to get rid of them as fast as possible..
I hate to do this because I try to grow my plants in as eco way as possible, but I find it effective and then I can continue growing them peacefully!
Sending lot’s of energy and luck! 🤞🏻🍀

Captain Jacks dead bug brew. My queen anthurium got thrips and I soaked her with that every other day for 6 weeks and now she’s “fine”. Do I have thrip damage on my first perfect leaf? Yes. Is there a new leaf finally emerging? Also yes. It takes time but it’s not going to destroy your collection if you work hard.

I have a question - when you get thrips on a plant that is on a moss pole- are the thrips also in the moss? I’m just wondering if you will have to destroy the moss poles?

So sorry about the thrips! They are such little b*******! I’ve had them several times and always get through the outbreak okay, but it’s nerve wracking and a lot of work! My advice is to throw away infested plants, especially if they’re replaceable. Good luck! 🍀

😢 so so sad to see your favorite plants so sick!! Thank you for showing us what to look for… I had no idea, other than hearing people talk about how bad they are. 😞
And maybe it’s fine, I don’t know what’s in the insecticides but maybe wear rubber gloves as you continue to spray them down? … would hate for it to affect you physically in some way! 😬

I have not dealt with thrips in the house but I have dealt with them on rose bushes and other flowers. Don't wear anything white or light colored outside when they are flying around. As I was watching your video, I was afraid that they would get in that sweater you were wearing. Thrips are one pest that will get on you too. If you feel like something is biting you and you can't see it, and you itch, it is Thrips. We were outside not long ago and I felt them biting me and I was like OH NO. And my daughter was wearing a white shirt. They loved her. Well I put them in hot water when we got our shirts in the house. They demolish white flowers. Could never have white roses.

Hi Joy, just a friendly reminder to please remove your kid’s bath toys, any loofas or washcloths, etc. before you spray pesticides in the tub. Don’t want the kiddos being exposed to that.

I also want to plug gloves, a face mask and eye protection. I know it seems extreme but the less exposure to pesticides the better. Personal protective equipment helps keep you safe from the negative side effects of the chemicals which are not meant to contact skin and mucous membranes.
      Stay safe! 💛
