Tina Weymouth is the badass bassist for Talking Heads; you don't come across too many female bass players, even fewer this good. "Take Me To the River," "And She Was," and "Psycho Killer" have deep grooves and just _aren't_ like everything else out there.
Came to post this. Seriously. Watch it. Review it or not, you will love it. A major band at the top of their game with some of the best session musicians at the time. You will love it.
Talking Heads are a four piece band formed at the Rhode Island School of Design. David Byrne is the lead singer. They have a concert film called Stop Making Sense that’s considered one of the best live performances of all time. Byrne was possessed in those shows. Watch the version Life During Wartime from that movie. It’s spectacular.
And may I recommend (yes, I may) reading David Byrne's book "How Music Works" . It deals with form and influence of music in general, intertwined with autobiographical parts of Byrne's musical career with Talking Heads.
Imagine being an 80's teen and coming home buzzed after midnight, turning on the MTV... and watching THIS. Trippy as hell and too groovy to change the channel!
Dude, by the time you get to know this band you’ll be bowing to them. This is exactly the reaction they wanted; what the fu** am I watching? The geek squad or rock gods? Keep in mind this was experimental, early days of MTV. This group and formed while at Rhode Island School of Design-they’re visual artist too. The Talking Heads library runs deep!
@@mr.knowitall6440 Indeed! I mentioned somewhere else that he might want to check out the live version of Life During Wartime from Stop Making Sense. One of my all-time favs.
The Talking Heads are highly innovative, highly creative alternative rock. If you enjoy the genre of alternative rock, then YES, this is a very important group to explore. It definitely depends on what genres you want to delve into. The rest of their catalogue is in this same style. I respect the hell out of them, but I don’t have many of their songs on my playlist. This is one of them....I love watching them live though......so original and unique.
This Must Be The Place is another favorite of mine from this group. I can't say enough about this group I love how different they are from everybody else.
The Name Of This Band Is TALKING HEADS. David Byrne is a Bona Fide GENIUS. Check out their Live Concert Film STOP MAKING SENSE. considered one of the greatest Concert Films of all time. It has a brilliantly conceived staging process intertwined with the musical presentations, another layer added with each song. Important then to watch this Film chronologically from start to finish to fully appreciate the artistic intentions. "Life During Wartime" Take Me To The River" "Psycho Killer" " I Zimbra" 🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦🍁🇨🇦
This music video was literally one of the first ever played on MTV when it first became a channel truly a part of television and music history right here!
Dude -- Talking Heads is TIGHT -- some of the best grooves to groove to. Recommend: "Take Me to the River" and "I Zimbra" (which is FIRE!!!) BTW, the whole album "Fear of Music" is pretty freaky...... BOTTOM LINE: YOU MUST react to more Talking Heads -- they have several albums that will suck you in, but they always keep you off balance (which will sometimes put people off).
OMG lol who is this ? this is the talking heads and they are awesome and yes they are definitely worth checking out, one of my favorites is road to nowhere ...♡
Talking Heads came around at the best possible time. MTV. Experimental videos. Bands not tied down to any particular genre. It was an AMAZING time for music!!! The Talking Heads were truly brilliant! ( side-note: I'd met David Byrne several times. He was such a sweet, humble guy who rode his bicycle around NYC. A very nice man.)
Great reaction biz. I remember the first time I heard this song and saw the video. I was like what the hell is this. Then it got stuck in my head and I love it. I still have it on my playlist and I listen to it all the time. Other songs by the talking heads are(psycho killer)and (Burning down the house) to name a couple. Keep up the good work I’m loving your channel.😀👍❤️✌️🌼
The Talking Heads - The people who brought you "The 80's" Seriously, this band is among a few that started the whole "New Wave" movement that defined the 80's. Them and Devo, The Police, and others were totally underground in the late 70's. The only place they could be heard in SoCal was a tiny radio station, literally "underground", in a basement in Pasadena. KROQ was synonymous with New Wave and ushered in the 80's before MTV existed.
You have to check “Life During Wartime” from the live concert film Stop Making Sense. It’s brilliant. Fun fact, that concert film was directed by Jonathan Demme who also did Silence of the Lambs.
David Byrne is a founding member of the Talking Heads and a noted performance artist. Maybe you should start out just listening and work your way into watching their videos.
Biz, get a copy of their DVD "Stop Making sense" ...watch it... then tell me what you think... you can watch a few vids here but if you watch the whole DVD you will definately rate it as the best Music DVD ever made, I'm sure every reactor will tell you the same thing.
I will guarantee you will like anything from there live video concert, Stop Making Scene. I will suggest the live video performance of the song , Life During Wartime.
talking heads, tina weymouth/chris frantz - tom tom club, “genius of love” on of the best BOPS ever! i’m really shocked that you don’t know talking heads being that most hip hop heads give them such props. the lead singer david byrne released his broadway musical (concert footage directed by spike lee) of talking heads hits and his own last year. back on broadway this fall. one of the best concert films ever made. ‘american utopia’. this band and everything they do is golden. (and yes, it is a “conscious” song). i’m rambling because i’m high!
If you came of age in the 80's, being "cool" was measured by how different you were from everyone else. Rebellion was in. Counter-culture was in. New sounds in music. New ways to dress. New ways to dance. It was a reaction against the "fitting in" culture of the late 70's (the disco era). It was a very creative time.
Unfortunately this is the only song from the album (remain in light) that got any airplay.....FANTASTIC album. (i think this is the weakest song on there...but maybe because it's been played to death). Check out 'Crosseyed and Painless', 'Born under Punches', 'The Great Curve'....all amazing. also...as mentioned below 'stop making sense' is a great concert film...
That just seems weird to me. _Crosseyed and Painless_ even had a music video, but it just didn't get the airplay. As much as I like _Once In A Lifetime,_ I wouldn't expect it to have overshadowed the rest of the album to such a degree. Maybe the fact that this was the first time the band had any music videos released for an album factored into it somehow, and the arrival of MTV kind of changing the paradigm for singles.
There was this weird thing in the early 80s where it was cool to not be cool. I mean--there was plenty of cool shit--but it was OK to be an absolute fucking nerd for about two years, which is a great thing. Too many "cool" people are faking it.
They have a very different approach to their musical visuals. But if you close your eyes and listen they are great musicians. And their vocals are as good as anybody. I got to see them in 1979 and I couldn't sit during their performance. I'm a lifelong fan of the Talking Heads.
As a Rhode Island native you should know RISD students when you see them. David Byrne, the singer and Chris Franz, the drummer met and formed their first band at RISD
I take it as whatever the difference in our questions, we all got questions...and we are all right here....same as it ever was. This is a great band Live and Stop Making Sense is a force of nature....
Biz, you looked completely baffled 😂. Don't concentrate too much on the videos especially from the 80s. This was a huge group. I prefer and recommend "Take it to the river" and"Psycho Killers"
Talking head rule! Life during wartime, burning down the house, psycho killer, and she was, stop making sense, take me to the river, ck out stop making sense the concert movie.
When you get ready to head into the 80s you will find a lot of the videos were just..weird. The Talking Heads are a band. They have a huge catalog of hits. They were very big in the late 70s and 80s. They were quirky, for sure, but super talented. They have a live film called Stop Making Sense and if you really want to understand why they were so successful despite being a little out there, you really should check out some of those performances. They are no nonsense, kick ass excellent musicians. I would start with the live version of Life During Wartime. Also, I'm very excited about your further dive into the 80s. I have a couple of must recommendations if you're exploring the 80s! Please react to Duran Duran, Rio is a good start and INXS (pronounced "in excess") Need You Tonight/ Mediate. PLEASE dont forget Mediate!!
YES, Talking Heads most certainly deserve a deep dive. My own favorite is the song Houses in Motion, but the entire catalog is great. AND AND AND, you *must* listen to the bassist’s side project, Tom Tom Club-specifically, Genius of Love. My guess is that it’ll sound familiar. Fantastic female bassist
They are a freakin riot to watch live. Start with Life During Wartime. I also highly recommend the concert film by Jonathin Demme. It's called Stop Making Sense, I think, named after that highly acclaimed tour.
I know this reaction is 2 years old but I’m just now coming across it. Talking Heads were genius imho. This song has come back into my playlist after a couple of decades, especially after Covid. It feels relevant for me in this time.
Watcha man! Enjoyed your reaction. It's an odd one, but it's about those confidence tricksters of the eighties, those lifestyle gurus and those snake-handlers and those cult-leaders and those TV-evangelists who profess easy answers for those freaked out in modern life. It's about a midlife crisis basically and that moment when you look in the mirror, freak out, and are willing to believe things from anyone to explain away where you are right now. x
True. He was quite fascinated with different religious rituals. A lot of the "dance" moves in this vid are him imitating bits and pieces of rituals from around the world. (These days he'd be slammed by the "cultural appropriation" police.)
The Talking Heads are interesting and fun. Many hits. Artsy. Nerdy. Different lyrics with a groovy beat. 🎵👍 This is maybe a hard one to start with. A better introduction might be Psycho Killer. Life During Wartime is great. A band like this ... but not at all similar ... is the B52s.
"Wild Wild Life," "Burning down the House," "And She Was," "Psycho Killer," "Life during wartime," ... Also check out Tina Waymouth W/ The Tom Tom Club on "The Genius of Love"

I could name you far more female bassists off the top of my head than female drummers or guitarists.
@@BunniMonster Haha, have to agree, I think Tina is absolutely the bomb but even to this day, the "art-student female bassist" is in vogue!
