  • My name is Xanthe Wyse.
This video is some of the thoughts in my head, mainly to do with impairment vs disability, identity, autism and auditory processing difficulties.
My late Dad's voice is in the clip at the beginning from over 25 years ago
My primary diagnoses are bipolar 1 disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Clinicians classify me as having an impairment of a 'mental injury'. (I forgot to mention this is different from organic disease or a traumatic brain injury from impact).
I have spoken before about my autism spectrum features vs my son's (I keep him anonymous). He was noted in childhood to have an auditory processing difficulty. He wasn't deaf yet sometimes it seemed like he was. I have some similar difficulties from time to time. My hearing is super sensitive, yet sometimes, I can seem like I am deaf. Yet I am not. My brain sometimes has difficulty processing speech and other noises.
When I am severely shutdown (mainly from PTSD), I temporarily can't hear, see etc even if someone shouts at me close range. This is not any loss of functioning within my ears, so not 'deaf'.
There is a threshold of clinical significance before diagnosing a 'disorder'. I am diagnosed with several 'disorders'.
Yet, in advocacy circles, especially those who promote identifying as 'neurodivergent', some are offended by words like 'disorder' and 'impairment.'
I give some examples such as how my needing to wearing glasses is not considered to be a disability.
