  • Always exciting to catch something new and unexpected. I have not caught nor heard of this station before. It is Shan News radio, a clandestine station that targets Myanmar. The station itself is located in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
I received this during daytime, my lunch hour, when I was just aimlessly scanning the shortwave bands. It is on the Qodosen SR-286 with a 10 metre wire. The transmitter is in Al Dhabbaya, UAE, with azimuth of 90 degrees, so directly to the east from the UAE. Received in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Another super rare station seldom if ever heard here where I live. This particular radio receives very weak signals very well. The little “Q” works just awesome! 73 and have a great weekend!

Thank you! I agree with you, the Qodosen is a little wonder on weak signals. It works very well for that.

Congratulations, André. Great catch. I really would like to know more about this radio, what their stance is. Thailand has always had complex, changing, ambiguous and sometimes tumultuous relationship with their Burmese neighbor. The current Thai government tends to be friendly to the Burmese junta. So I don't easily see them being happy with a strong anti-junta movement broadcasting from their soil (I understand they don't) or even being based there.
They also face a constant influx of refugees and illegal migrants they struggle to cope with.
Sometimes the Burmese army even crosses over the border to attack rebels who took refuge in Thailand, and this always causes much tension.

Hi Alain, thank you so much for your comment. There seems to be very little information about this station, the only site I could find was for Shan News Agency, in Burmese. I used Google Translate and then found a link on that page to Shan Radio also, so I assume that would be this station. But there is almost no information on that site apart from words that sound like some kind of a song. Google wasn't able to translate everything on the site. So I really don't know what their relationship with the current Thai government is, or what their editorial policy and political views are. Really hard to find out anything about them. A bit of mystery is always interesting :-)

I am subbed tour channel. I have to say,, do you think you could actually listen to this station for pleasure?
I know it's a blessing that you can actually copy the station but wow. Thumbs up, my friend.

Hey there and thanks for your comment! Thank you also for subscribing :-) You are right, this is not something that I would listen to for pleasure, for sure. But it was fun to catch something entirely new to me. Another signal to add to my SW log.

I believe congratulations are in order, Andre! 📻💯👍🏼
Tried searching my old logs (using the Skywave Schedules app) but found no record of this station. Well, to be fair I don't listen to shortwave radio during the day and have exhausted looking for faint stations on the 16m band.
Clandestine stations don't transmit on fixed schedules, do they? That could explain why I've never tuned to Shan News last year. 🤔
All hail the SWL King! 📻👑🙇

Thank you! I was really surprised by this one. I scan the 16 metre band often during the day. I usually get good, even excellent, signals there. But I have never caught this one before. I don't even remember seeing it listed anywhere during my daytime scans. I often use something like short-wave.info, open on the 16 metre band page, while I scan, to see what I can look for. Maybe it started transmitting recently.
Some clandestine stations do seem to transmit fairly regularly at the same time, at least some that transmit to Africa. This one is listed as transmitting from 12:50 to 13:30, I'll try again tomorrow.

@@swlistening I just remembered that we're both in different time zones. Therefore what's considered optimal listening conditions for Johannesburg could be poor at my QTH. How do you find Radio Thailand on 7475 kHz? It's surprisingly better this year than it was the year before.
I like Radio Thailand as it plays music and news in English but it's only an hour's broadcast. I have to wait until 2:30 am local time to tune in unless I decide to sleep early. 😀

@@StratmanII Very true, we will not experience the same listening conditions if we listen at exactly the same time. This station will be on air around 19:00 your time, which might not be good for the 16 metre band at your location. Although, if it is targeting Myanmar at that time, maybe the signal might be readable there in Malaysia also?
I also like Radio Thailand, their transmission is a bit different, kind of like tourism marketing for Thailand sometimes. And I have heard ads on Radio Thailand, for resorts and for medical procedures, which I found a bit weird, ads on shortwave! I have caught them on 7475 kHz, relatively clearly. Here is a comparison on the Barlow Wadley and the XHDATA D-808: th-cam.com/video/IrIjBtCVbnI/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared

@@swlisteningI noted the general and medical tourism pitches too! I'm not sure whether advertising on shortwave is strictly forbidden by the ITU but it is certainly against the FCC's regulations for the United States.
I think cosmetic surgery (particularly gender change operations) are popular in Thailand as they're more affordable than in the West.
I've set my Tecsun PL-660 to 17720 kHz. Currently there's nothing transmitting on that frequency (the closest is 17710 kHz, occupied by Adventist World Radio in Chinese) so I hope I can hear Shan News by 1900 hours local time. 😄
Edit: Nothing on 17720 kHz and it's 20 minutes past 7 pm as I type this. Will try again next time.

@@StratmanII Not sure if you are still listening, it is 12:54 UTC now, I can hear Shan News radio again on 17720 kHz right now, much better quality than yesterday. It started at exactly 12:50 UTC. Not sure about the exact time on your side, I think it should be about 20:54 your side now? I think my previous calculation was wrong. Maybe if you try now, if you get this message in time 🙂

I'm curious how you know so much about this station.😊

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

Hey there and thanks for your question! Identifying the station was fairly easy, it is listed on short-wave.info and shortwavedb. Then I used Google :-) I found a website for Shan News Agency, in Burmese, which I translated using Google's translation function. There was information on that site about the radio station. Then I also found some information on Wikipedia. There isn't much available, to be honest, but enough to form a basic understanding of what this station is about.
