Underground Tunnelling for Power on the Tongariro Power Development

There is no more rugged breed of man than the New Zealand tunneller...a tough phlegmatic individual devoted to his life and craft and dedicated to the task of digging into the earth so that people on the surface can enjoy the benefits of modern science.

I started as Heavy Plant Fitter for the MOWD in Turangi Workshops then moved onto Rangipo North before going onto shift work in the Underground Power Station as a fitter.
Once the project started to slow down moved over the New Zealand Electricity as a Operator at the Tokaanu Power Station.
A lot of good memories.

I was at Tongariro High School from 1971 to 1977 I remember the Italian kids at our school some were friends.
With the hole thru Dominion Breweries produced a special beer which every family in Turangi seemed to have several crates of big bottles.
