I value your opinion, I often LISTEN to your reviews first before making a purchase. I recently had a bad experience with a solar powered phone charger I purchased for my daughter to take to college. Basically, it was expensive piece of garbage. Then to my amazement I found your review on this E-boot Solar charger.. 30 seconds after watching your review, I made my on line purchase, and was pleasantly surprised with this product when it arrived, so much so I purchased a second one for my wife.

Just wanted to say thanks. Purchased the solar charger and it works like a charm. Great way to have self reliant power source available on the go anywhere for your essential electronic devices. I'm actually typing this response from my phone after charging it with the solar charger.
I notice that the "slow flash" that you mention is actually an SOS morse code signal.

Thanks for the review of these products. I order the 5000 m/amp just last week based upon your other video How Many Bags, and was very impressed. Going hunting and a lot of time you forget to charge your phone, this tool would be handy in your hunting pack. Just watched this video on your review of the eBoot charger and solar panel and I like the charger better. It is smaller, and dust proof and water resistant is the seller for me. The other, the solar panel, appears to be in cardboard, don't like that. Also, when you demonstrated the lights on it, I believe the slower flash is actually sending out morse code of S O S...you may want to verify that. It would be 3 quick flashes, 3 slow flashes and then 3 quick again. I only know this cause of being an Amateur Radio operator. Great channel, great reviews and some great products. Keep up the good work Sootch!!

I finally broke down and ordered an eBoot Solar Charger from Amazon. I saw this video when you first posted it, but I kept putting off getting one.
It's nice for only being $20 and Maxpedition will be putting out and Eboot solar charger molle pouch for only $180... So for $200 it's a nice combo.

The bag is $99 and worth every penny. I guess the $20 bag would be more suitable? Lol!
SensiblePrepper Usually whats in the bag is worth more than the bag itself but if people have 100$ to burn then giver! Although not as versatile having a few small cell batteries in your pack is a cheap and lightweight way to store power. For solar power nothing beats powerfilm flexible panels, although they are expensive they are more capable and don't require 100$ pouches!
betatalk357 Reassuring story. I've also heard about people saving wet devices by putting them in a bowl of dry rice which apparently will absorb the moisture from the device. I'm not anxious to have to try it but I'm sure I will eventually, lol.

I've been looking for a suitable solar charger in my prep for the Marathon Des Sables. This looks like a good candidate. Thanks!
If relying on solar 5 watts should be the bare minimum, but this would be better than nothing and the price is good, just makes the quality questionable looks as cheap as it is! If the battery holds 1000mAh then you're only going to get abot 75% upon discharge if that which is about 1/3rd of a full cell charge... There are numerous portable crank options that are more portable and are not limited to sunlight.
Moonshield23 There are many to choose from on amazon but I have yet to find one that really is marketed for its ruggedness. I have a flashlight. There is a version by coglans which has a 6000 mAh battery and generates via crank and solar for about 50$. They sell it on modern outpost website (great website btw). I have yet to find the golden cranker though!
It is made in the same Chinese factory from the same parts as the Levin brand which costs twice as much.
Hand cranks take so much cranking though. In theory it sounds good but once you crank for 2 minutes you realize it completely sucks ass and you don't get as much power as you think you would. Solar is nice because you can just place it in the sun and leave it there as you go collect wood and even charges on your backpack while you're hiking. I've found solar chargers are smaller and lighter than crank chargers as well.
JayXX88 two minutes of cranking will yield as much as 20-30 minutes of light if using a 1 -3 watt panel. There are some cranks that are better than others just like solar panels...

I have an Eboot with the battery as in the video and it's a great item. Charges my Galaxy S5 up pretty quick. I also use a PowerAdd 7.5 watt solar panel which can boost the charge in the Eboot as well as it charging from it's own panel. Fantastic idea to have power backups. Thanks for the video brother :D

One thing to pay attention to is the "output amperage". The 5v is unimportant! If you have a device like iphone6 or Samsung s4 or s5; those phones require 2A (amps) output from the charger on the usb port (less if you charge them when they are off). So if the usb output port on these panels is less, they wont be able to charge those power hungry phones. So let your subs know the output current (amps) on the usb ports of those solar chargers to be certain they are compatible with their phones and/or tablets.

They can still charge with less than 2A, just slower. Also, equally important is whether the USB ports follow the international standards for high power charging on USB or follow the Apple way. If you opt to get a phone that follows standards you can also stick with just one microUSB cable which you can find anywhere.
Thanks for the video. I just picked up one of these to try out. I can say that from a full charge, it will charge an iPhone 6+ from 12% to 100%... once. By that time the Eboot will be just about completely out. Charge time was 3~4 hours. I forgot to time it. Next I'll have to see how long it takes to solar charge.

Hey Sootch...question about the smaller charger. Once the internal battery is fully charged, could you hook up the Goal Zero battery guide 10 charger and recharge your batteries off of it? I'm looking for options to charge my batteries without having to buy another set of Goal Zero Nomad 7 panels.

I bought a different brand portable cell charger with a built-in solar panel. but it won't charge the battery by solar. if the towers are working a smart phone could be useful. if not then it will loose most of its capabilities but not all. compass app should still work and books that are stored in memory will still be accessible. maps would still work if you store them for off line use
Li-po's have been known to explode when being charged. When I change my RC ships remote control Li-po battery, its sitting in a large terracotta pot just in case.

Just for revision, so the one for $20.50 has to be charged by sun (can't be charged by electricity) and then when is charged it can charge other things, and the panel for $23.99 can store energy as well as charge the phone directly without firstly charging the battery. Am I correct in this statement?
Really great report Sootch! How is the cardboard packaging holding up on that flat solar panel? Adding some Sugru - a really handy adhesive, moldable silicone putty - as bumpers to the corners will make it wear better.
BTW, Sugru is a great addition to any prepper's tool pack because it's useful for so many things from water proof repairs to fashioning "hacks" for your gear. Epoxy glue or putty is harder and tougher, and sometimes a better option. But silicone putty adds padding and cushioning and has some give to it and can be removed. The 1-part Sugru seems to have more adhesive properties than the craft quality 2-part silicone putty that I've used. You could also use silicone caulk, but it's way harder to shape and the odor is tough to take. Unopened 5gram packets of Sugru keep up to 6 mo, or even 18 mo in the frig. If you carefully heat seal the edges of the foil packet it comes in, you can keep an OPENED packet for some months [haven't tried that yet]. Sugru cures fully from exposure to moisture in about 24 hs, longer if really thick.
Have one and it's been great. But, I hopped on Amazon on Firday Dec. 19th, 2014, and saw that they were on sale at just under $15 for the 5000 mah.

You said you can't charge your phone from the solar panel (I'm talking about the smaller one), but let's say the battery in the power bank is at 50% and I'm outside and I want to charge my phone. After I plug in the phone, will the solar panel still work, so I can charge the phone a little bit more with the help from the solar panel?
Or does it work in a way that if you plug in a device and it starts charging, then you can't charge the power bank itself at all? I have a similar power bank and I can use the solar panel to help charge my phone (the battery inside the power bank drains slower and I can get more phone charge out of it) but it's not waterproof and can't really attach it to a bag so I wonder if I should upgrade to this.

Has that black eBoot charger ever charged up to 100% in the sun light only? I have one just like it and the most ive ever gotten was a 50% charge from the sun. Kind of a bummer for me.

One thing I have RARELY seen mentioned about these little units is that if you want to charge them with ANY degree of rapidity, You need to so so fro an external source with SERIOUS amperage! I just bought a pair of Goal Zero flip 20 batteries. I charge them from my 40 Amp emergency system which can be charged from anything from a 20 Watt Panel (With a Charge Controller) all the way up to 300 Watts.
These tiny little battery/Panel combos ARE better than nothing, but I would not trust them in an SHTF situation.
Just my opinion....
The fuller a batery is, the harder it becames to charge more into it. Only during the best hours you will charge extra. However, charge it a USB-powersource to 100% and be happy it charges something while out there. Once you emptied it, it will charge again. Not to 100% anytime soon but at least it charges you smartphone.
Did the large solar charger blink s-o-s in Morse code in slow mode? If so, that's awesome!
Three questions;
1) have you charged your eboot device using only the solar panel?
2) I purchased one similar to the eboot and the instructions informed me that I should only use the solar panel to charge the device as an emergency situation. Does eboot directions say the same thing?
3) If you have used the solar panel to charge the eboot, how long did it take?

5V is the norm for USB, the current determines the charging speed. The values are usually from 0.5 A up to 2 A, usually 1-1.5A for wall USB chargers.

I use an Anker 8 watt panel to do a similar job but i also recharge my 18650 batteries as well using XTAR MC1 USB Lithium Battery Charger which charges 10440 14500 16340 18350 18650 26650 and the enegizer AA/AAA battery charger as well. I do strongly recommend that you only use protected lithium batteries for safety. Also do not only use the high capacity cells like the Panasonic 3400mAh as they take along time to charge, i carry 4 panasonic and 4 KeepPower 18650 2200mAh Protected Rechargeable Li-Ion Battery which uses the Samsung ICR18650-22F cell. I use the KeepPower most of the time reserving the Panasonic cells for when i need that extra high power runtime. Like when the dam fool dog runs off and gets lost.

It looked like the "slow flash" of the panel was actually an SOS sequence.
Apparently, the effectiveness of these solar charging devices are affected somewhat by the angle to and of the sun, and the filtering affect of windows and shadows. I read of a test with a meter that shows the optimum charging result is from DIRECT SUN, rather than angled or filtered through a window. So it will charge slower if hanging from a pack, etc. than if laying flat, facing the sun. I think the warnings are more about leaving the battery style ones it in a hot car or other extreme temp situations. Sometimes those batteries will expand and fail in those extreme situations.
+SkulpTools SkulpterAz Any solar panel including the ones one your roof have to face the sun square on for max power. Thes things dont have enough power to provide any useful charge from flat and because of the basic charging circuit, they could catch fire if you try to solar charge a pack that has been charged from the mains first. Mine takes over a week of direct sun to charge all 5 bars.
It say that it charge when the color turn green but its red instead and it doesn't charge at all. Please help!

To all the people saying this is useless in SHTF, what about when your hiking and get lost, then your cell phone runs out of battery. Then i would say this is very useful. Not every SHTF is grid down

And in a grid down situation, or in a remote location, a cell phone is useless besides taking pictures and a source of illumination.
I got one of those (creative edge chargers) last year. I still have more testing to do. but yes it will take a longg time in full sunlight to charge. I use it for hiking, with my phone off for days at a time. This will be useful. But it is more useful for a battery bank. My phone was nearly dead and i got a full charge on it with 1 or two bars left on the charger.
Charge it before leaving. Hook it on your pack, then use it when you need it. A couple days in the woods won't require you to put your phone on full charge more than once. It has dual ports,so if you wanna charge it in the wall and have the phone charge through it at the same time when in town . The carabiners suck though, they move and slide off, i use a zip tie to keep it from swinging around. #ghettorigged.
I need one of these every day. My phone battery lasts one day, and if I'm not home to charge it, I have to run my car battery to charge it when I'm out. This is a better option.
Like it but in a SHTF, i might leave my phone behind so i am not tracked.
I bought two of these products. Neither one will receive a solar charge. Is it possible that I ruined them from leaving them in the sunlight? Is it possible that the heat or direct sunlight destroyed the solar light receptor?
I read that these devices I meant to withstand direct sunlight without harming it.

Michael Jordon probably not for cell service. but the gps should still work since it works off of satellites as well as if you have saved music and movies for entertainment, downloaded ebooks. downloaded maps, downloaded survival books, family pictures etc. and you dont really have to worry about space necause you can buy a 16 gb micro sd card for 15 bucks pretty much at any electronics store. so download everything you need onto those, plus a good shockproof water proof case and 2 extra batteries. and you should be set

In this first charger there is accu li-polymer type "606090" (6.0mm*60mm*90mm) inside and this is only 4000mAh @ 3.7V (not a 5000mAh!), period. So even with 100% DC-DC boost-converter efficiency (to reach 5V at output) it could have 4000*3,7/5=2960mAh. But it's rather not 100% efficiency converter, similar powerbank had ~75% efficiency, so this one has probably effectively near 2200mAh. At best, depends on the quality and real capacity of "606090" accu... So maybe 1-2 charges of small 1000mAh battery in the phone. But kinda weatherproof, so maybe worth the $8 :)
I believe for the price and size/weight why would you not have it? I understand in really bad situations it maybe useless, but in many others it could help. I could see using this to charge an actual GPS that talks to satellites instead of towers. Great vid!
All GPS devices can detect satellite signals, that's what that stands for. Something that tells you your general area based on cell towers is NOT a GPS device.

In the product warnings from this company it says (and I quote) "Do not throw the solar charger into the fire.".. Which fire are they talking about? It sounds like they have a specific fire in mind.. Was this guy just typing what the voices in his head were telling him?

it takes 20 hours to fully charge your solar charger with sun,
Only 5 hours of sunlight per day is strong enough
One charge is enough to charge you phone for phone half day
You need to buy 8 to have a constant supply of electricity on your phone
When the SHTF truly happens, what makes any of you think your cell phones will still be working at all? When the power goes out, so do the cell towers etc.
