In the 1980s when I lived in Ottawa, Canada, I subscribed to the New Yorker so I would know from the On the Town section when Tommy Flanagan was playing in the Apple. I would then take the Greyhound bus to NYC (a 6 or 7 hr trip each way) and walk to the Village from the Port Authority, where, having a return bus ticket, I could sleep after the gig in the cheapest digs in the City (free). With most jazz musicians, it's always, "Here's so-and-so playing such-and-such a tune." With Flanagan it's always, "Here's such-and-such a tune, played by Tommy Flanagan." Still, in a blindfold test, he was instantly recognizable by his exquisite touch, and the inner voicings of his chords.
One of the greatest. World class. Tommy's style is so full of soul and passion. Very romantic. Just makes you feel so good to close your eyes and listen to him weave a beautiful story.
I had the great pleasure of meeting and working w/ Tommy Flanagan on "TALMAGE FARLOW", my documentary film about the jazz guitarist, Tal Farlow. Tommy brought so much to the trio Tal formed for the film, which also included Red Mitchell on bass. A formative and totally memorable experience for me, then a first-time filmmaker. RIP Tommy. Your music & the memories I and so many others have of you & Diana live on... Lorenzo DeStefano
Tal and Tommy sounded great together. Their album "Chromatic Palette" was a highlight of Tal's later years. I would have loved to have been in the room with those two and Red, spending the afternoon listening to music making at that level in such an intimate setting. Great film. Seeing it on PBS in 1987 is pretty much what got me listening to jazz as a 15 year old. Suddenly Rush and Led Zeppelin weren't the whole universe to me, and a couple of months later I was listening to Miles and Coltrane and headed towards Ellington and all the rest.
Tommy Flanagan was the first piano player I started listening to when I started listening to Jazz 26 years ago. I never get tired of his music, delicate, elegant classy. Bop with a very lyrical but personal touch. His trio albums are masterpieces (on Enja Records) + Jazz Poet on Timeless Records are really 'must haves' for any Tommy Flanagan fan.

His style is very spiritual. He is patient, taking time to let every note have its say.
While in NYC in the eighties, I heard, and even met Mr Flannigan several times! He was always elegant and kind, and always played perfectly. He always brings tears to my eyes!
Just so sensitive and soulful. They say that game recognizes game !!! This is beautiful And inspirational . Playing as such comes from a hole different place and awareness. God appointed. ..we are so blessed by souls such as Tommy Flanagan.
"Whith malice towards none".
So true. You can listen to Tommy all day long and never get tired of his style. "Jazz Poet" really was an apt description. The mix of swing and beauty, body and mind, both parts equally important.
I see what Ella loved now. Thank you Tommy For Blessing our world with one of your gifts. So Beautiful, Sincere, Humble. The patience in your thoughts preceded you. Love...,
Pure poetry and a supremely effortless touch. When I was living or playing in NYC between 1991-1998 I would try to hear Mr. Flanagan as much as possible; for some reason I'd also see him out and about around Manhattan quite frequently, saying, "God bless you, Mr. Flanagan" and getting a polite nod and wave in return. His album, "Together," with Kenny Barron, is still at the pinnacle of duo piano artistry.
OMG!!!!!!!!! 1981 is the year my darling husband and I married!!!!! I just accidentally??? came across The Fabulous Mr. Flanagan playing this the other day!!!!!!!! He is someone one would NEVER admit not digging him!!!!!! (Just like nobody would ever admit not diggin' Lady Day or Jazz!!!!!!!! I hate to admit that I had taken him for granted for all these years!!!!!! I AM LITERALLY ASHAMED!!!!!!!! AND HAVING HAD THE NERVE AND AUDACITY OF CALLING MYSELF A JAZZ VOCALIST FOR SO MANY YEARS!!!!!!! (AT LEAST I ONLY REFERRED TO MYSELF AS SUCH BECAUSE OF THE MANY GIFTED AND TALENTED JAZZ MUSICIANS I HAD THE EXTREME PLEASURE OF SINGING WITH) including Red Garland, Freddie Crane, Dick Harp, Dick Shreve, Jim Black and so many others! Thank You The One And Only Mr. Tommy Flanagan!!!!!!!!!!!! From Betty Green
I love the 'Together' album of Tommy Flanagan and Kenny Baron, both masters of the piano!!!..."Goodbye Mr. Evans" such a beautiful composition by Phil Woods.
"With Malice Toward None" by Tom McIntosh -- Always think of this tune as it was SUNG by Lambert Hendriks & Ross. To add this to his program is a genius idea. "With Malice Toward None", ingeniously arranged and and so skillfully played by one of the very very best! Never enough Tommy Flanagan! OMG!
I heard and met Tommy several times in Detroit (Baker's Keyboard Lounge) and Chicago in the 80s and 90s. I have learned so much from him. His solo on "Blue Bossa" is a master class. Someone once said that his solos are so beautiful and logical that they seem to have been written out beforehand.
The man that backed up Coltrane on giant steps, possibly the most important recording since Rachmaninoff recorded his own works, talk about a hall of famer if ever there was one.
Steven, like you, I hadn't hear of Tommy Flanagan before TH-cam suggested him, sensibly enough because I was listening to Bill Evans, one of my favourite VERY lyrical jazz pianists, and Flanagan is beautifully similar in his playing. So Thanks, TH-cam from me as well!
Before rock 'n pop captured the interest of the masses, a few, select jazz pianists used to fill concert halls around the world. They played masterpieces such as being played here by TF
My uncles music always puts me at ease! Thanks for sharing!!!!
+Nakeshwa Flanagan Thank you for watching ;)
+Nakeshwa Flanagan he's your uncle ?
Yes he is
that's beautiful !
+Nakeshwa Flanagan it is inconceivable that he played with many jazz stars, he is a star, and now his niece wrote comments in TH-cam =D

I love Tommy Flanagan, he's my fave jazz pianist of all time.
I will die in peace If I ever get to play like this. What a master!
A rare & humble Master playing in harmony and melody vs the usual show off!! What a pleasure and an honor to hear and see. BRAVO.

"taking time to let every note have its say" _ What a way to describe how music should be played! Yes, every note counts!
While in NYC in the eighties, I heard, and even met Mr Flannigan several times! He was always elegant and kind, and always played perfectly. He always brings tears to my eyes!
I had the good fortune to have seen/heard him play live In New York!

Never fails to amaze to see that there are people who actually gave this beautiful music a 'thumbs down'. There truly IS no accounting for taste.

@ bonjour Jérémy,
Dès le début,
belle écoute et belle journée.

Thank YOU for watching :) We are going to post as many other videos we have in our archive..!
Rather, "THANK YOU"! This glorious concert, for one great example, is PURE GOLD, nothing less!
So beautiful, so inspiring, so damn excellent.

Hal Tsuchida Hey, great, thank you.

🌾💚🌱🙄
Daisukiiiiii
Thats my uncle
My hope is that this famous man passed away as a wealthy man!
Jazz musicians rarely die rich. They leave behind the wealth of their music and they live on. The wealth Tommy Flanagan lelf is enormous.
