In Germany, Hinduism has over 100,000 followers. In North Rhine-Westphalia alone, over 40,000 believing Hindus are counted, most of whom, but not exclusively, are Tamils. Our Sri Kamadchi Ampal Temple in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Hamm has been since completion and inauguration on the 7th. July 2002 the largest Dravida temple in Europe and, after the North Indian Nagara-style Neasden temple in London, the second largest Hindu temple in Europe. The center of the Tamil Hindus was founded in 1989 in Lange Str. in Hamm. It is the only temple of the goddess Kamadchi outside India or South Asia. The temple is not only the religious center of the Tamil Hindus, but also the central meeting place of the German Hindus.
The annual temple festival, in which the statue of the goddess Kamadchi circles the temple as part of a procession and at the same time blesses the city and the people living in it, visits over 25,000 believers and visitors from all over the world. The NRW Hindu community includes over 5000 people, about 60,000 Tamil Hindus live in Germany in total.
The temple building, which costs about 1.5 to 1.7 million euros and is financed solely by donations and loans, was designed by Hammer Architect Heinz-Rainer Eichhorst, who strictly followed the model and style of the Kamakshi Temple in Kanchipuram in southern India. The foundation stone of the building with a floor area of 27 x 27 m (729 m²) took place in March 2000. Several temple builders from India were employed for the construction, especially for the many sculptures and ornaments. From the outside, the building is characterized by red and white longitudinal stripes, the impressive portal of the Gopuram (templar tower) is 17 m high.
The temple is dedicated to the goddess Kamadchi ("Sri Kamadchi Ampal": Sanskrit: kama-akshi; Sri = respectful salutation, Ampal = goddess, Kamadchi = derivation from the Sanskrit name कामाक्षी, K Overall, the building is adorned not only by the large granite statue of the eponymous goddess, but also over 200 other figures of deities. You are cordially invited to visit our temple at any time.
