      Despite the media focusing on Timberlake’s seeming “annoyed” demeanor after “the kiss”-he actually admired Madonna and in 2008 he collaborated with her in the video of 4 Minutes, they’d become friends, and he introduced her during her induction to the R&R HOF that same year.

    The reason they opened with like a virgin was cause this was the 20th VMAs and Madonna performed like a virgin on a cake like that at the first one. Also on last year’s celebration tour the 3 layered stage represented the cake and she ended up the show lowering her vale and going down when much of the world was introduced to her at the VMA performance lifting her vale

    I too remember seeing this on the front page of newspapers (the kiss with Brittany) the following morning.
    The best way to convey how good this entire live performance was at the time is to pay attention to the famous audience members uncanned authentic reactions on their faces. It was pure joy and ecstasy. I think it wasn't a technical performance, but a very generous spirited and lighthearted performance. Before people began calling Madonna the Queen, recently, she has always been humble and down to earth.
    No one probably can cover like a virgin, though. The song was actually written by two straight men, but only Madonna was literally born to record that song.

    As a Madonna fan, when the American Life album came out, I took the album as Madonna making a bigger 'middle-finger-to-the-mainstream' statement. Her song Hollywood was satirical. By the time this was performed, Hollywood was delivered as literal. It's like Madonna went over their heads, so she was screw it - give 'em what they want.

  • @derikcowan
    @derikcowan 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    I think the thing about this performance that made iconic is less about the performance itself and more about the moment it hit. Yes, Hollywood was Madonna's current single, and yes this performance was marking the 20th anniversary of Madonna's original Like a Virgin VMA performance. But also Madonna and Missy had just collaborated on a remix of Into the Groove for a Gap Commercial that has become the version of that song Madonna tours, and Me Against the Music was just about to come out/had just come out. And yes, Britney and Justin had broken up just the year prior, and having Britney and Xtina performing together when they were generally considered rivals was a thing. So you have so many pieces that were right up in the cultural consciousness tied into one performance. Then add that Madonna first offered Xtina's role to JLo but she declined it because the original Bennifer wedding was weeks away and...

      Christina wasn't even supposed to perform with them in the first place. Madonna had asked Britney and J.Lo, and J.Lo had to cancel last minute because she was filming "Gigli" in Canada. Then P!nk was asked, who also had to drop out. Christina was 3rd choice.

    Well her first performance on the vmas was controversial, 20 years later she does the same so I think it was a performance to reinvent that controversy. Another 20 years later she is once again at the vmas dressed as a dominatrix and causing controversy about her body, image, age etc.. there’s some calculation here imo but at the same time she’s instinctually making choices in the moment as well.

    There were lots of names, they say; Kylie, Jlo, Pink... In my opinion, Britney & Christina were the best names though. In general, "homages" are boring, 'cause no one can do what the original did, although in this case Madonna brought the sassiness, the subversion, the amusement. Madonna is the only one who has had Britney & Christina as backup singers and dancers and Taylor as her guitar player LOL.

    Madonna always wanted to be controversial. Her original live performance of "Like a Virgin" had her performing suggestive dance moves in a wedding dress and a belt that said "Boy Toy" which was considered somewhat shocking in the early 1980s. Twenty years on and things had changed, that sort of thing was now pretty mundane but gay rights, including same-sex marriage, was a hot topic in the early 2000s, so the performance was staged as a polygamous lesbian wedding with Madonna as a female groom marrying two brides. Another twenty years and times have changed again, I'm not even sure what you'd have to do to be controversial anymore.

    I agree the performance is high camp… it’s actually pretty corny in terms of the staging and performance, but what I did love was the message of female sisterhood and empowerment, that she could be ‘the boss’ but still love the new girlies who followed her and give them her blessing. A lot of female artists have talked trash about M, but by and large, she’s taken the high road and frequently performs with other female artists… the exceptions will happen when she’s really disrespected by someone or when someone is ‘borrowing’ a little too much from her playbook to the point of being reductive. 🤣 🫖
    Also, the audience reaction was hilarious. JT acting like the douche he is… he really let his mask slip that night. The original Queer Eye guys freaking out, Mary J was not having it. It was a mixed bag of petty and elation.
