  • Tests of Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) in UK Hyundai IONIQ Electric - rural roads, motorway, day, night.
    LKAS is not autonomous, self-driving tech. It holds up OK as a driving assist safety backup for varying road types and conditions.
    The UK version does not 'ping pong' between lane markings...
    Also mentions new Lane Following Assist (LFA) Bjorn Nyland reported is in new Hyundai KONA Electric. With permission I've used a screenshot from his TH-cam video:

    Bjorn has a demo video on KONA's LFA:
    • Kona's LFA when not ho...
    Hyundai's press kit suggests LFA works from 0 mph, not just from IONIQ's LKA's 37 mph threshold:

    Thanks for putting in all of that time and effort, Duncan. It's very informative. If there were more Ioniq's on the used car market, then we'd be happy to buy one. It is clearly a very economical car; rivalling the Renault Zöe, but without the silly battery lease scheme. With the ranges that you're achieving, it would be ideal for most of our needs. It's rare that we travel more than 150 miles in a day, so there would be almost no need to use public chargers, and the LKAS would give that useful extra layer of security whilst driving.

    Thanks for testing! I found that narrow lanes are one of the problems with LKAS. Wider lanes like on the motorway are okay.

      Thanks. Agreed. LKAS seems best suited to consistent motorway conditions.

      It's exactly the same I've experienced with my own Ioniq Electric. If the road is narrow, LKAS turns on and off, but most off and LKAS is therefore not suitable under these conditions. If the sun is against you and the light is reflected in the road, LKAS also has difficult conditions and often strikes. I have only had the car for 3 months and I have intentionally used adaptive cruise control as well as LKAS very diligently - namely to explore and know the limits of the systems - which I find very important to know. In addition.
      I do not know the reason why LKAS only works at speeds above 60 km / h. There must be a reason for that.

    I've done a few experiments myself and removed my hands altogether. But ready to take wheel. Lasts about 10-12seconds before it beeps at you to take the wheel. Didn't know about the speed activation level though. I think the 2019 Ioniq has the lane steering as mine has that icon in it and handles curves quite well from my experiments.

    Thanks for the video. I have a question not related to the LKAS, but it shows up in the video. The air vent reflection on the windscreen seems to be very obvious once you see it. Give the camera angle looks to be about head hight, is this reflection annoying, or does it not show up?

    • @ZeroTailpipe
      @ZeroTailpipe  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. The camera is above my eye-line but I think it is visible when driving into bright light. It's not distracting though. More of an issue is the three charging status lights. They are brighter plastic and show up in the middle of the wind screen. Fortunately they are small. A bit more thought about this from Hyundai would have been good.
      By the way, I went back and watched the #15 Scenic Drive video. The conditions were brighter there and the air vent is even more visible in the footage. Again, I don't think it distracted me at all...

    How does it feel to steer manually when LKAS is activated?

    • @ZeroTailpipe
      @ZeroTailpipe  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn’t feel much different. LKAS makes lots of small movements. Sometimes you can feel a larger move. Infrequently it might also steer you towards a lane marking when you don’t want to. It’s easy to override it with a small hand turn though...

    it doesn't recognise the kerb. mostly there are no white lines on the left. Only good for motorway if you are in the middle lane

    Thank you for this video. I am following the Kona features very carefully and if it improves on this, which is still good, then I think it will be very good. One other thing, at 14:30 you showed 106 miles left to go with 66% battery left. That works out at 163 miles range. Was I reading this right for the 28kWh Ionic?

    • @ZeroTailpipe
      @ZeroTailpipe  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks. I have been seeing up to 172 miles estimated range in the past few weeks. The UK has had a heatwave which has helped this. I expect the numbers to fall soon. In winter the numbers were more like 115-130, I seem to recall.
      My driving is on a mix of urban, rural and highway/motorway. This may help the numbers.
      I did do a 120+ mile round trip, with about three-quarters motorways, last week. That took about 75-80% of the battery. I'm still yet to do a proper range test...

      This warm weather sure does help. I have been getting 140 in my 30kWh Leaf. But 170+ is exceptional. Thanks again for the Lane Keeping test. It is an important feature to me in my next EV.

      Many reviews describe the Ioniq as one of the best power efficient EVs on the market. The battery is 30KW but Hyundai hold it back to 28. I get the sort of figures waterstink talks about , it not always about having a bigger heavier battery, and because of its size the battery fast charges in about 18 min

    Do you have to keep both hands on the wheel?

    • @ZeroTailpipe
      @ZeroTailpipe  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The wheel kind of moves by itself in your hands. But if it doesn’t detect your ‘grasp’ (some tug or resistance) it will beep an alert after about 13 seconds. After a while of that LKAS disengages...

    Dude you were literally steering the car by hand for the entire video. Showing a hands-free demo and only taking over when it gives up is not only the best test of the system, but also the best demonstration. I've test driven an Ioniq, I threw some edge cases at it, and it demonstrated that Active LKAS *is* self driving on most roads under most conditions.

    Have you considered testing comma.ai openpilot on your Hyundai Ionic?

      Fascinating! Not heard of this. IONIQ doesn’t seem to be on the supported list of vehicles. How would someone test it...?

      @@ZeroTailpipe I've checked discord.comma.ai/ channel #hyundai-kia-genesis and found that:
      "ku7 Last Friday at 6:10 AM
      For anyone watching, the ioniq is going!"
      So it means, it's working on Hyundai Ioniq.
