Hey boss, love your synth videos and great sense of humor. I have one addition about the RAM4, it can in fact hold FKS (fractional scaling data). There were several commercial banks made for the DX where you needed a RAM4, formatted only as FKS. If you were loading the patches from floppy, you had to load 2 banks, one to internal for the patches/perfs and then a second, directly to cart for the fractional data. In this case, the cart has no sounds on it at all (if you press the cartridge button you get an error) but you need it in for the internal patches to play correctly. Also, some firmwares have a legit factory reset: Press and hold [EDIT] then press [16] and [32] simultaneously. Release and you'll see the firmware displayed, then it will reset and you will probably lose all your patches so don't do it unless you have a cart! PS the aforementioned procedure does not seem to work on E! units.
Yes, edited that out as I felt things dragged on some. Also thought that the concept of using a memory card for fractional scaling alone was somewhat underwhelming. Most of us just tried to stick as much voice and performance data on these things as we could. Yes, have a few VRC100x cartridges knocking around and was going to do another video. Sadly never got around to it. Traveling a lot and don’t even have my old studio anymore.
Hello, thank you for loading this. Could you please clarify two points: 1. What's the difference between loading with or without system? (2:34) 2. Since the cartridge was set to Bank 1 at 2:30, is it correct that "Load" puts the 64 voices and 32 performances from Bank 1 of the cartridge into Internal memory? I'm asking because I didn't realize you could use this shortcut to fill all the performance and voice slots with one command. Thank you.
Bricago 1. Loading without system simply means you only load voice and performance but not the System data. System data is stuff like all of your MIDI settings, LCD contrast, Control Assigns etc. 2. Yes, loads all 64.
Hedge 777 Thank you! If you have time for a follow-up question I’d really appreciate it. I noticed one problem today that I’m trying to troubleshoot: a few voices only play on about six notes per octave. Other notes in the octave don’t sound or are very low. This occurs for both versions of the voice: Internal and Cartridge. Any ideas on how to correct this? Thank you.
Hedge 777 I found the answer in an online forum. Another user was reporting the same issue with voices 46 SilvaTrumpet and 54 SilvaBrass. It appears that they were intentionally assigned complimentary fractional scaling to allow them to combine as Performance Memory 14 Multi Brass Ensemble, and retain polyphony. With the ROM cartridge removed, both voices operate on all notes, albeit with a "t" next to the name in the display to indicate fractional scaling, which the Internal Memory does not retain (p. 63 of the manual). With the ROM cartridge installed, not all notes of the octave play for these voices in Single mode.
VRC108 cartridge for the DX7. Head to Dexed GitHub page and download Dexed Cart 1. In the Original Yamaha folder. VRC cartridges. Full tines is in bank A. And BTW guys I’m done posting links to sounds. I can point you in the right direction but please do your own research. ~Hedge
Short answer is no. DX7 and DX11 are not compatible. And we don’t have the factory banks for the DX11 (nothing that works). If you ever find them. Shoot them this way. :p Any other DX questions come up. Please see FAQs: facebook.com/hedge777/posts/124799085893714
Depends on what you mean by ‘restoring’. Copying patches from cards should work. However if your E upgrade went bad. Different story. Please see FAQs: facebook.com/hedge777/posts/124799085893714
@@Hedge777 thank you! Was hoping to reset banks 2-4 on E!. Just bought a DX7IIFD with (what was stated) "factory" E! Bank 1 has seemingly good patches and matches ROM cartridge. Banks 2-4 each patch is garbled in name and sound. It has a new battery. E! version is 1.19.
SysEx dump ought to work. Link to patches either in the description (or FB page, pinned post). I don’t remember menus for E for MKII but it’s the same stuff basically. Turn off men protect, make sure your RX channel/ID is set to 1. Then make sure that SysEx receive is on. A bit of menu diving but you’ll figure it out I’m sure.
Hi and thanks for using DX7 synths !! Just need a ask U a tech. My Dx7 II FD floppy went bad years ago. I previously installed and removed the E! board. E! went bad too....blew some caps. Ok the problem was I wanted to remove and I did removed the floppy unit and keep using the synth like a model II D. But when i turned on the unit the, synth died and,all was,on INIT with no sound !! Is ,this, synth dead? Is it,design to look for the floppy disk unit to properly work ?? Or maybe,a restore just like this video will make it work again without the floppy drive unit ?? Did I kill it ?? And which floppy drive I can use to replace this ? Maybe a USB to floppy universal thinggy will work too. I heard about a universal USB that works for 800k floppy units!! Thanks in advance and keep up this awesome !! ps. Post that movie intro ...yeah,the White horse intro !!
BTW voices and performances going to "init" after some hardware problem is common. A factory reload should do the trick. Just restore from SysEx. Get a RAM4 cartridge to double the memory and forget the floppy drive. No need honestly.
Hey love your videos! I have a question you may answer. When I turn on my DX7, I have the A note doing some morse code randomly without me touching it...and after it jsut stops...do you know where it might come from? Thank you
Hey just found the problem, disconnected the keyboard and found out it came from it. It’s actually a little diods that’s dead and need to change it..thank you :)

CAN I PUT DX-7-FD-II SOUNDS INTO MY MOX-SF-6 YAMAHA KEYBOARD,LET ME KNOW
I NEED A CLEAN DX-7 FD-II,WHERE CAN I GET ONE,NON -ABUSED
hahahaha should add 'mission impossible' theme (when you are inserting a cartridge) Epic!
What do you think about the Hcard 702 from Hypersynth? You can store up to 100 banks (6400 voices, 3200 perfs, 200 tunnings, 100 setups)!
I don't really see the need for these things in a studio environment but if anyone uses their DXs standalone. INDISPENSABLe.
WHY NO DX-7-FD-II ORGAN SOUNDS ON MOX-SF-6 KEYBOARD..??????????
hi the cartridge works for dx11 too?

Have a DX7II FD with dead drive and it works without issues. As long as the RAM battery is good and the rest of the board is intact it should work.

Could be anything from a flaky key contact to something shorting out on the board. Impossible to tell from here :-)

Well as long as it wasn’t the French resistance. :-)
