- This one is a really big rant. You won’t believe what happened with this 2017 Ram 1500 that came into the shop. It’s quite the story, but when you hear how everything went down you will be stunned. Why is there so much animosity between shops nowadays? Why can’t we just get along and work together? It’s quite frustrating and there’s really no reason for it. Have you encountered something like this before? If so, let us know in the comments! We hope this helps. Enjoy!

The world would be SUCH a better place with more people and businesses like you and yours.
I was that other tech early in my career. After being humbled a few times I’ve learned to be thorough and to not get defensive when I’m wrong.
You are correct sir, I tell people that I work with that you always work with facts and training.
Agree and if you mess up, own it, be honest, and fix it. We all make mistakes but it's how you handle it that shows true merit.
So I just had a boo boo yesterday. Well it was 2 years ago just came back yesterday. 2013 terrain or 2012 I can’t remember installed a used engine 2 years ago and never locktighted the flex plate bolts we know where this goes from here. I own my mistakes and I’m taking care of the customer for zero dollars even though it’s out of my warranty period. Customer said I could have told her anything but I’ve found honesty is the best policy. It’s on my table got it all apart before I went home for the weekend will get it fixed money
The first time I went to my current shop was for a. Second opinion about a slipping transmission. A dealership told me I needed a new transmission. I dropped the car off and about two hours later they called to tell me they fixed my transmission . They said my bill wasn’t written up yet but they wanted to let me know it was fixed .expecting the worst but a little relieved that it wasn’t a transmission replacement I went to pick it up . The owner told me it was just a clogged screen cost was $50 . I told the owner I was shocked and thanked him for his honesty. He told me it was sad I had to thank him and said that by doing the right thing he knew I’d be back . Over 30 years later and at least 10 referrals I still use that shop .
great story, it must have been years ago a trans filter and fluid is about 250 today
My ex-father-in-law was driving his Toyota to the store when the engine stopped at a traffic light. It wouldn't turn over so he had it towed to the local dealer who told him that the engine was locked up and would require a replacement. He called me and I told him to have the car towed to a nearby shop that I had delt with before. The owner there looked under the hood, unwrapped the broken fan belt from behind the crank pulley and then started the engine. He wouldn't even charge for the service. I brought him a case of beer just to say thanks.
I'm hoping you went off on Toyota. I hope you drove it there and said Wow!! can you believe how fast I got this fixed. Then ask them why did you say it needs a new Engine.
@@stevekirby5546 that won't do any good. I'd put in a yelp review instead. You'll inform more people about this crooked shop (a DEALERSHIP no less!)
@@stevekirby5546dealerships replace things, not fix them. They're always looking for the easiest path with the highest FRU because that's how they make money
@@RiqueRacing What dealership have you been going to. I have had dealerships fix problems without actually having to replace the entire part.
@@stevekirby5546 I haven't been to one, I work at one. Most parts are replaced upon diagnosis rather than repairing where possible.
You are never wrong when you do the right thing.
No truer words have ever been spoken!
Now what are you going to do with the new engine on the pallet?
If a shop can’t tell the difference between us is danger and a dead battery that they should not even be in business it’s a shame
Absolutely, I remember an old service tech (im in the HVAC industry) told me in situations like the one your describing the first one to start screaming and complaining is guilty.
Sounds like that mechanic was mad he just lost out on a profitable windfall for him and he was exposed for padding the repair!
Sometimes shops see $$$$ only. You did the right thing by sending the tow truck and getting that truck back to your shop. Everyone wins when you do the right thing.
I'm a retired mechanic and you have a first-class shop. Make sure all your employees know the full story so they can be proud of where they work.
I was a tech for over 50 years and you're absolutely correct. Too many times another shop will throw your shop under the bus.The so called tech in the other shop likely assumed that because the water pump was leaking and wouldn't crank, that the engine must be seized. It's possible he was having a horrible day but it's still no excuse. The thing I learned over the years is to understand what the customer is saying. They are the ones who have to pay the invoice. Some are honestly struggling financially, and some are embarrassed that they can't pay, but others are just cheapskates who will argue for hours to save 10 cents.
I had a woman one time who cried her eyes out because her tires were down to the steel and she had no money. We found a set of almost new takeoffs for her and we all chipped in enough money to pay for them. We gave the car a quick once over and gave her car a free oil change since it was overdue. We took care of her because she was down on her luck. Six months later she came back and gave us each a box of beer, a huge hug and a heartfelt thank you. I think all of us just melted on the spot.
beer and a hug, that is payment, sometimes you need to just help out someone in need god bless you!!!
I've done things like that when I had my dealerships and independent shops- and more often than not I'd see the person we went to bat for had traded the car we fixed (that they couldn't pay for) for a brand new one, or enjoyed the social media posts trashing us despite taking our generosity- usually followed by vacation pictures.
I do construction and I've got a hundred stories. I've got time for one. I bought a new fan motor for MY NEIGHBORS AC. They had kids and it was 100 degrees. God is watching so make it good
You're a good man, Sherwood. It's a damn shame your shop is so far away from me!
I will try to make this short, I had a similar issue. A Chrysler dealer told a young couple that we had just sold a car too that the vehicle needed and engine. They were 500k away, I felt so bad for this young couple with a young child. it made no sense, the dealer told them that the engine was bad but was unable to give feedback on any details or a reason. I felt it was strange so I got a car dolly and drove to the dealer, paid 700.00 diagnostic fee and picked up the vehicle. I got it home and looked at it it needed a starter motor. all that for a 120.00 starter motor. the Dealer in my opinion was just a thief. Great job of looking after the customer and good video.
I’ve been a Master Tech for 40 years and shops do drive the bus over other shops along with fellow mechanics in the same shop, it’s unfortunate but EGOS do play a huge part combined with a whole lot of testosterone. Great video and you have every right to go on a rant. Take care and take a breath.
Definitely call that service advisor and offer her a job and an opportunity to see how a real shop works!
If you say a motor is locked up and it runs perfectly you need to get out of the business
Agreed 100%. If that other shop, who stated that the engine was 'locked-up', given your findings upon receiving the vehicle, could arrive at that conclusion then whoever that tech was needs to have his/her license revoked.
This video and L1 Auto’s recent video really makes me appreciate good shops!
That video was insane, well worth a watch for sure!
Wasn't your fault but god will multiply your good intentions
Not good intentions but good deeds.
Thats not necessarily true.
First off, not everyone believes there is a God. Second, what if its gods… or which God.. can you demonstrate there is a god and if so which one and how many?
@@mikesabin8568 I think a penetrating question about whether there is a God is this: can intelligence, consciousness for that matter, arise from the absence of it? I personally answer that question with a no. And so for me, God, a foundational intelligence must exist. Hopefully this doesn’t upset you. I wanted to try to answer at least a part of your question the best that I could.✌️
@@jeremyah78 ok the problem with that is you are making the argument that something cant come from nothing. Problem is, we have never had a nothing to examine so how do we know there ever was a nothing. Also, even if there was a higher intelligence, just where did that derive from? That intelligence itself had to come from somewhere, correct? Where are the materials that this supposed intelligence used to “create” other intelligence come from? Magic? Also, even if it came from a higher intelligence, that does go any further proving its the intelligence you believe in. What if its a different god, or gods? Can you demonstrate its the specific god you believe in? And if so how? Hope i dint piss you off either
@@jeremyah78 if there is a god and he had the intelligence consciousness, just where did that derive from? If consciousness cant come from just nowhere, where did his just pop up from. How do we know its god and not gods?
Firstly, a good service advisor is hard to find. This girl needs a job with you where, undoubtedly, she'll see what working for a professional company looks like.
Also, this is the second time in 3 weeks I've seen you take responsibility for something wheres it's gone wrong!! Well done, we've all had other garages slag us off 👏
Good luck, I tried working as an honest tech, and all it got me was ridicule and being shown the door out for not being profitable enough.
99 percent of shops will fail that advisor. Toxic toxic buisness. I truly hope that she finds a good place to work
I am dreaming of finding a shop that wants to do the right thing and not just rip off people here in Bulgaria. You are the perfect shop I would be a regular customer if I was around you.
There is a high standard here! You guys are great
Not many shops that would have stepped up like you did Sherwood 👍 you guys are the real deal
I like your mentality of everyone helping each other as a bigger picture to ultimately help the customer. I wish that others shared the same mentality. I work as a field service tech for a dealership and I have tried to install the helping each other mentality with the other techs. I know of a different dealership where the service tech are bad mouthing each other of the same company.
I’m compelled to comment on this video
I admire your candor.
Your customers are very fortunate to have such a knowledgeable, ethical mechanic.
well done.
I have to say your shop went above and beyond to satisfy the customer.Too bad there are some bad apples out there. Also, your shop looks awesome. That's another indication of how professional you guys are!
That's the way businesses should treat their customers! I sure wish you guys were here in my area!
I can honestly say after almost 9 years of working here that this is still one of the biggest factors in the pride that I have of being an employee for this shop. We go above and beyond to take care of our clients.
That tech that worked on that vehicle is a real shitbird. He should be flipping burgers at Micky D's
another guy who missed the point
Sherwood - I’m moved by this video deeply. I live in Jacksonville and fortunately have a good mechanic. In the event that changes, I would not hesitate to contact you.
One day all of us will face final judgment. I believe you’ve likely passed that test. ♥️🙏
This guy is down on his luck, and this could have caused him to lose his truck. There is no way he could afford a motor and he probably would have scraped the truck because of this misdiagnosis. You guys are amazing for taking care of this guy!
You folks are a class act with your integrity and business ethics-I wish I was close to enough to utilize your services. Your community is lucky to have you-cheers.
In the end, good wins over bad everytime. Amazing work and compassion. Like always
I have had a very overheated motor lock up. Then cool down and run great when cooled down and got coolant back in it. It was not a modern motor. Not sure a modern motor will do that. Much tighter tolerances.
Nice to see the decency in our field.
We could do so much more if we worked together.. Blame is not the answer. Integrity is.
Well said. Finally someone who gets the point of the video
I've had my own unpleasant experiences with shop owners in the past. It's a part of every business and not just the auto repair industry. Good shops will always survive; bad shops will fail every single time.
I own a mobile business working on foreign and exotic cars
I agree there is a lot of “drag-you-down” mentality in the auto industry, I saw someone else call it crab mentality. Where all the other crabs in the bucket will always bring you down when you try to gain freedom
I always tell customers “we encourage a second opinion” whenever I am not 110% sure about a car
I bet you guys have a ton of applicants. I would personally love to work with you Guys
Send in an application! We are hiring!
Way to go Sherwood - real integrity and decency!
Fan clutch
Water pump
And
New battery
😊🙏🎉
Have a 2001 firebird 3.8 that my wife bought new, and had a coolant leak that i couldn't find. You could definitely smell it. I replaced the radiator cap which didn't help. We took it to a shop which is 5 minutes away that we worked with before, and was told it had a blown head gasket. Was quoted a price of $6500 for a rebuilt engine. All scheduled maintenance was done, and the dex cool was removed years ago. This shop was recently sold and had a new manager and techs. We ended up taking it to another local shop, and it was just the intake manifold gasket. Has been fine ever since. I'm happy she decided not to proceed with the engine swap lol
Sherwood, I admire your integrity and wish we had a shop like yours near me. Keep doing the right thing.
The industry has gotten really bad, not just with the shops but your fellow Techs will do you wrong.. Terrible.
I can totally relate to this situation, in 1974 I became an apprentice mechanic and an excellent shop on Chicago’s southside. The shop had an excellent reputation in front and alignment plus we were known as the shop that would make it right. I learned the correct wayto repair cars and trucks and also a lot of hacked repairs! Keep up the good work Sherwood
I would test drive it back to that shop and toss him the water pump 😂
I’d ride shotgun!! 😂😂
just bad techs. too many of them in this trade. my mom lives 2 hours away and she had a toyota sitting. tried to boost it it wouldn't start. tow truck came and took it to a shop. she calls me because they said her engine is seized up. i said how can your engine seize up for 2 months of sitting, get your car out of there. she towed it back home. i drive up to take a look, they broke the starter trying to remove it for who knows what reason. i turn the engine over by hand. the starter is seized to the engine so that is a project for me. i go home, drive back another weekend to remove the starter, 3 hrs later its out. i drive home and next weekend come back with a starter. put it in and it doesn't start. im like wtf i know i turned it over by hand. so i turn it over again, and im like oh no... i take the belt off and it starts right away. alternator was seized up. misdiagnosed and damaged components for no reason other than incompetence. i had a baby at home at the time and driving 2 hrs one way was not ideal. what a mess. i see so much bad workmanship at work from other places. just have pride, be honest, respect the person paying you, and do your best. i work hard to always do my best and change the perception of technicians in this trade. i hate when i see lazy crap.
i have a 2009 personal vehicle that was planning of fixing up but found engine is actually locked up not sure is i will fix it at 67 years old not as eager as i used to be
You are more than a car shop. When you're on a negative streak like your customer ushally your bad luck hits you more than once. So Sherwood and team are rescueing more than just this truck. Hopefully your costomer gets his life back on the sunny side of life thanks to your service(s).
As a shop owner I can relate to you 100%. I’m part of that “warranty network” I’ll help any other independent shop out there. We all need to work together, so much gets done when we get along
Doing the right thing is always rewarded maybe not right away but it always will be good in return. Not matter what you believe even yin & yang would agree
Sherwood you are a cut above, I wish we had a shop like yours in WACO, TX.
Good on you for taking the opportunity to help someone when you don't have to. Real meaning of "charitable". I am sure that the way you conduct your business with integrity and compassion reaps many benefits. I wish you continued success, both with the shop and the channel.
Very NOBLE Sherwood I’ve found the inlet tube at the pump rust thru and start to leak before the pump goes I live in the rust belt By that time just replace pump CHEERS
that is so awesome of you to do that. That is what will keep your business growing. Keep the great videos coming
Who knew that a bad battery could cause a leaking water pump😂😂. Honesty, integrity and empathy is an unusual combination these days. Keep it up.
Mediocre Shops and Tech's will SOON Be GONE!! Perhaps Tech's Lack of Training, Lack of SOP'S . Yes on Hiring that S.A. Girl 🙂
Its not your fault no need to buy him an engine you heard the old saying no good deed goes unpunished its your shop which it might help your channel and rep but be sure anything goes wrong with that engine you put in for free blame will fall on you. Im a 8 year mechanic. Even if you didn’t need engine my opinion still stands respectively
So a shop sad the engine is seized, but it was just a dead battery 😂😂. What is the shops name?? Save others from this place!! Bad shops make the best shops look bad.
I’ve learned so much to approaching vehicles thanks to you guys. Doctor, I would love to meet you and if I had the means, to make the move and such, work for you. Definitely could agree that the tech needs some education when it comes to testing basic components. I hope there is an update to this one soon.
The tech is either totally incompetant or a scam artist . Pick one . As a DIY you could put a socket on the crank and at least see if it seized . That would be the starting point of a diagnosis . You should put that shop on the s#it list ! If fact , some places target customers that break down from out of the area .
Character is doing the right thing when no one's looking, you could work on my car and I'm OCD
Good intentions are always returned may it be direct or indirect. The karma bus always comes around. I always go the extra miles and it has repaid me well in life . 🤘👍
Hey thanks you guys ROCK brother the thing is you all stepped up and they didn't plane and simple
if u have an external coolant leek it dont matter if the engine is locked up or not u will see it
Even if it's locked up you can still pressure test the motor and see if the radiator is leaking a year after putting a radiator in a car normally isn't the shops fault it might of been hot when they got it and things swelled up and locked up and cooled off and the parts went back to normal and was able to crank
Most shops would have told him to go pound salt. Great job. Taking care of your customers. 👍👍
I agree with wanting to take care of the customer, but by process, wouldn’t you want to diagnose the vehicle yourself before ordering any parts (let alone an engine)?
Those are universal words of wisdom. Principles to try to live by. We're all flawed. It's difficult not to be crazy. Just try. I've seen people that can do it. It can be done.
The lack of pride in the industry if you mess up it’s not the end of the world be wise and learn but never forget the lesson
Take care for your health. My heart is destroyed from idiots.
Karma is real. This is why you have multiple profitable shops, because you are loaded with good people. God bless you.
High praise to you guys. And Sherwood you are 100% correct about other shops throwing other shops under the bus. BTW do you have to eat the cost of the engine?
Since moving from the “Midwest” I’ve learned one thing in Florida; there’s only a few reputable shops. I’ve been there, done that and got the t-shirt too! I guess I’m saying there’s a lot of “tech’s” but too few mechanics!
Good job had shop try to sell me motor when the cam belt tensioner was bad I replaced it runs great ?? 19:20
he is yelling because he got caught and he knows it, wanted the sell that man a new engine, and have a used one to sell what dirtbags and it would do good to name drop
With the cost of a new engine that would’ve put that owner in a pretty bad spot. I’m guessing he probably would have had to abandon that truck and find a beater to drive. The other shop is a disgusting example of just how incompetent or crooked auto repair shops can be. You on the other hand showed the best of repair shops by being both professional and decent in handling that issue. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Never take other tech word before you make your diagnosis. That has bit me in the ass a couple times. Always double check before doing the repair. Just a lesson we all need to learn at some point.
Shop owners need to be wise with their charity - lots of people will take advantage of other peoples' kindness.
The really sad aspect is that there is little recognition of good shops and good techs in the industry. Pay is low and working conditions are harsh. Before the internet, a good shop like yours would be virtually unknown outside of your area. You have read my other video comments, so you you know some of my story. I'm glad there are still some folks like yourself who have the situation and resources to keep on going.
That's why i try to fix everything i can on my car.
I’m am a 3 hour drive from your shop and I thinking how would I get my vehicle to you if it was broke and not drivable. Awesome customer support.
Hell I’m in RI and if I ever have a module/electrical issue I can’t diagnose…. I might just trailer my car down to Georgia!!! 😂
At the minute 17:37 he said to call the shop and offer the service advisor a job. That was my exact thought. Great job guys!!! It's good to knownthere are still reputable, honest shops oit there.
And you sleep better at night knowing everything is well.
No tech can ever make everything well
Communication is key. As far back as 40 years ago my mom broke down & I asked the right questions, got details from those questions & got her home without a tow truck.
It's competition that the customer is the one that gets caught in the middle of it.. having a shop that is doing everything right gets a bunch of 💩 from a shop that doesn't know what they are doing ridiculous. I have had a few of my oldest daughters friends that took their car to 3 different shops every estimate was different I ended up putting in a thermostat and radiator that was the whole issue .
If people don't speak up, those shady shop will still be in business doing more harm than good
I’m glad to see someone else understood the point of the video as he stated it. I stated this in my own comment but since you understood what he said I’d be interested in your take. This is a really ironic video. He says the whole point of the video is not to bad mouth shops because it hurts the industry’s reputation and he wants to stop that. Then he spends the whole video doing exactly what he says not to do. I know he didn’t say shop name but that is irrelevant anyways because his point was the industry. I’m not saying you should or shouldn’t expose bad shops or speak on bad practices but he said it. He just told everyone about a shop that said the engine was locked but nothing was wrong. It doesn’t get much more jacked up than that. Did he misspeak or what cuz this was a tutorial in what he said not to do at the beginning of the video and what he says the video is based upon. What’s your take on this again taking out how you feel about what should be done.
At 12:33, what kind of employer employs that kind of employee?
God Bless you Sherwood of Royalty Auto Service. You definitely are someone who many should look upto and admire. After hearing the breakdown of this client's vehicle issues and the way the other shop was handling the problem, I can see clearly why many look to go to your shop. Kudos to you and all your employees for making someone's day brighter. I definitely have a more brighter perspective for that reason and do my best to help others out as well in certain situations too. So big thank you to you Sherwood, your shop, your employees and all that are out there like yourself. Keep up the inspiration and motivation for others out there beyond yourself. Good job to all of you.
Get the Advisor a new job yes, then call em out. So glad I'm out of that industry. Think about it, let's say the tech with the bad attitude gets fired for whatever reason, when another shop calls to get a reference, they always lie and don't tell the truth that the guys a hack. They all cover for each other.
You are a great man sir. Period. You blew it on the BMW diff,,in a great way!!! But you are such a great man!!!!!!!!! TY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well tell me about it...i go through on daily basis this situation 😅 being good at diagnosis always brings rain on us😅all the hypocrisy cone pours down on the guy who is noce and know the job...thx for sharing sir
I can’t say enough about not only your integrity but your HEART!! The world could use more like you in EVERY profession. Many happy returns !!
It's great u feel about your customers the way u do. U are right. To bad other shops can't be like u guys
Good on ya mate.Keep up the good work etiquette!!Cheers from Sydney, Australia.
If you decide to give him a new motor, thats great. BUT, how can you not diagnose the car yourself first, before ordering a motor (and likely other parts). I hope you can return the motor atleast
Especially after the tech told you what he did about not being able to find a coolant leak.
Buying a Ram was the client’s first mistake.
Good job Sherwood, looking out for the customer first. You always take the high road and that's what I love about you and you're business model.
I've seen concerns like this time and time again, and it's embarrassing to the automotive industry.
Step 1 for any diagnostics, VERIFY THE CUSTOMER'S CONCERN.
The saddest problem in the automotive industry is the toxic work environment; too many shops say it's part of the norm.
It sucks they wanted to sell a motor and they are in the network. We have a network group that we are in as well and have had to use other shops. We have also had to do repairs for other shops. The fact the technician tried to pull some crap us dishonest. It's bad for this industry and that shop. Hopefully the owner finds out and handles that problem.
awesome
Sherwood your awesome you will be blessed and prosper for your actions while that other. Shop, we'll, ILL leave that comment blank. Your running a great shop due to your strong ethics,God bless...Don
This is truly a organization. I wish I had worked for years ago but we can't go back and change time.
Thank you. I agree that we all need to do better. I have been in the industry for over 28 years and never throw others under the bus, as it helps no one. I have repaired others' shop work and find it better to work together, as we can all learn from each other. Second opinions sometimes are the best. I have repaired and replaced many locked-up motors, and it is not hard to check for this at all on gas or diesel. we never go wrong when we help others!
I've seen it a bunch of times over the decades. People don't stop to put a wrench on hermanic balancer and see if it turns over.
geez what a spotless shop!
