So we setup our tile saw for the first time and ran our matric material attached to some calcite clams (Ruck's Pit, FL) - we made mess... I'm like there has got to be a better way to all of this: and in like 3 videos I'm watching you show one heck of an entry level answer. Thanks man.

I built my flat lap out of two 5gal buckets. Pop the motor out of that rig and suspend it from the floor of a 3 to 5gal upside-down bucket with the arbor pointed up through a hole you drill. The other bucket gets chopped down to build the upper water catchment system. It's a little tricky finding all the extra bits and fitting them together, but that's the fun part.

perfect. ive been ordering opal to work, and had planned on doing most of my work with a dremel, because i cant quite afford a genie just yet. i was thinking about converting a bench grinder, but this is a much better option. i have used tile saws in the past to cut agate, and jasper. never thought to dismantle one, to make it horizontal, and adding lap blades. this is awesome! thanks! liked and subscribed.

@@lapidarydave hey I thought I was the only one who ever thought of doing it like that, and the blade for cutting makes a good grinder, you can shape your stone before you start doing the finishing work.
I use the same water jug but what I did was drill a hole on the bottom of the water container and placed a water drip system for plants into it and used the e 6000 to water proof the hole and it’s great thanks for the idea
I have learned a lot from watching. I've got a 12 speed bench press drill that has a 1/2 inch arbor shaft. That shaft runs flat lap, cab shaping blades and some polishing. It runs 200 rpm to just under 4000 rpm. I need a new trim saw. Digging around, my trim blade fits my bench grinder, might give it a try. The arbor shaft wore out on my lortone
@@ubarukenchi3559 you can definitely do it just be safe. They’re so close to power and the water goes everywhere. Sometimes you can buy an arbor attachment for a bench grinder to hold that blade out a little bit more than super easy to build something around the blade to house water.
As with anything else..the real satisfaction should come when you think "I didnt spend megabucks to get this thing off the ground" and with a little more handiwork plus scraps and repurposed scrap you'd have a real good setup running that even LOOKS GOOD! (I think Lapidary Dave wanted to demonstrate that it takes hardly much time, money at all to get "something that works" off the ground! Thats the spirit!

Thanks for the great idea Dave! My 10”tile saw has a 5/8 shaft and I’ve not been able to find a flat lap disc with a 5/8 hole. At least not in a 6,8,or 10 inch. They’re all 1/2” holes. Can you drill out the hole a little and use it like that?

Just looking at it, I'm curious if you couldn't get the same use out of it just replacing the saw bale with a diamond lap, then raising the motor so that you would have more surface than you would get on a standard saw blade? It would be more of a 'side lap' than a flat lap, but still similar functionality?

4:47 i built myself a sharpening station for my water stones and how i setup my drip system is i found this tiny 50gph water pump 1.5”x1.5” cube that has a variable speed built in and came with the correct hose, it was designed for a fish tank and i got it for $8…. later i realized i have a junk coffee maker i could have sourced for a pump but $8 is a great option. after that i spent $12 on an electric pedal to turn the pump on and off. then i spent $8 on an adjustable water spout but the little npt threaded hose connection was another $12. i spent $40 total but if i didn’t want the adjustable spout it only would have cost $20 and if i used the coffee machine it would have only cost as much as the foot pedal which i can also use for other things like running the lapping machine

I have a nice tile saw that’s pretty much set up for me to convert it to a flat lap it’s by skil cheap base model.my question is can I use hard disks up to 3000 grit to polish and or make cabs from agate, jasper ect
Absolutely my friend they make flat lab discs that go up to like 50,000 or 100,000 I’m happy to hear that you’re going to give it a shot enjoy and let me know how it goes
@@mcclarnon1974 yep you can use the back side of the flat lap disk as a backing plate and use spray adhesive to stick the paper to it Also to cava little bit better you might want to put some kind of foam backing in between the sandpaper and the disc which would give it some cushion and allow it to contour to the stone you can chop up an old yoga mat or buy some thin foam padding from the hardware store

Been waiting for this one! I have that exact saw and the arbor is 5/8”. So far my research has only produced lap discs with half inch arbor size. Any ideas of how to get around this? And what are your thoughts on using a 6 inch or 8 inch disc as opposed to the original 7 inch? I live in an apartment and with this set up, could easily use it in my shower and make cabbing a reality. Excited.
What size wheel are you using in the video? I can only find 4 inch discs with a 5/8 arbor. Might you have a lead where I can score a bit bigger discs or have you tried just boring out the hole in the disc from 1/2 to fit the 5/8 arbor? Can you tell i'm jonesin to get this bad boy tore apart and start working my rocks ;-)
I really enjoyed this video as I do all your utube vids, My problem is, where do you find a lap disc with a 5/8 " arbor. all I can find is 4-5 " . all the 7 and 8" seem to all have 1/2" arbor hole. Anyway, keep doing the great job you are doing.

Hello there my friend thanks for watching and thanks for reaching out if you took apart the tile saw to where the arbor is no longer in cased by the plastic which was the reservoir that held the water in the tile so then yes you can use six or 8 inch discs if you were using hard diamond laps then no you do not need to back it with anything but obviously when you want to do some final sanding you’re gonna need a hard lap for sandpaper or diamond pads whatever you decide to use in my case I just apply silicon carbide sanding discs to the back of my hard laps and I use the hard lap as a master lap I hope this helps please let me know if you need any more assistance it’s always my pleasure to help anyway I can if you haven’t done so already please consider subscribing it really helps the channel
I was wondering, could you use the tile saw without chopping it in half, would be a side lap lol, you could still have your water in the bottom and only be able to use half the blade but still keep it as a saw.
I would say no In my opinion I don't think it's any more dangerous after I modified the way doing this video a tile saw was intended to be used with water and in fact I think the water is probably less likely to get to the motor by the way I am applying water to the flap then it is the way it comes brand new it is a wet tile saw after all :)

i stick my garden hose in it with a valve and a short length of drip line to even out the flow and cut on a white plastic 6foot table. works awesome.
2 days after viewing this video, I found a used 7" tile saw on craigslist $20. I might have found a new hobby. Thanks Dave.

I wound up using his other idea of using a drill press and a 1/2 inch diameter bolt . It works great!

@@mcclarnon1974 maybe 60-80-180-220-600 hard flat laps for shaping and pre polishing and then you could sand with silicone carbide from 360-600-1000

You could also put a disposal in the drain like Kramer did and make salads while you shower and polish rocks.

Maybe it is a dumb question, but being a musician, do you ever worry about injuring your hands/fingers on the tile saw?
Not really :) diamond tools for the most part are safe and even though it’s not impossible it can be difficult to find ways to hurt yourself

In my opinion I don't think it's any more dangerous after I modified the way doing this video a tile saw was intended to be used with water and in fact I think the water is probably less likely to get to the motor by the way I am applying water to the flap then it is the way it comes brand new it is a wet tile saw after all :)

Continuous diamond wheels are fairly safe
Yep continuous diamond tools can be a lot safe then traditional steel tools
I use one for both saw and 6 inch lap. Same 7 inch ryobi. With a silicone tray I made.
