That belt sander launch just took me back to junior high school and the belt sander races we would have on the floor when the teacher wasn't looking. Giant old school 10 pound shiny metal monsters. I wish I had one like that today. Hell, they're probably still working.

I round over the trailing edge with my router before i run end grain through the planer. Quick, easy and never any tear out

Beautiful cutting board. I have your book and have made good use of it. Thanks for the guidance. BTW - Linn at Darbin Orvar has a circle cutting jig for the bandsaw. I made one and it cuts great circles of virtually any size. You might want to give it a look.

Just a tip, I wouldn't use oak for a cutting board unless its a closed grain species.

If you run a chamfer along the back edge before running it through the planner that would reduce your chip out too.

Instead of using the feet on the bottom, you could turn a concave recess on the bottom on the lathe, which would allow the board to always sit flat. (If you had a lathe which could fit the board) (which you probably do) (which I don't)
Nice cutting board! I’m just a beginner but would love to try an end grain cutting board one day. It’s going to have to wait for wood to come down in price as I don’t have any hardwood scraps lying around. I have one large chunk of maple, but that wouldn’t make much of an end grain cutting board by itself.
For planing end grain, I round over the back edge and take super-light passes. Works great.

I like your use of CNCs. Each tool is useful in certain situations.
As a mechanical engineer, I like to use CNCs, lathes, milling machines, 3D printers, wood working tools, metal working tools, and a lot more.
Have made dozens of cutting boards, both edge grain end grain ones, but never thought of doing a round one like this. It is fantastic, can't wait to make one. Thanks for showing this and for your techniques. Like showing that we can use a planer if we are going to remove the tear out edge anyway, such a simple idea but have never seen it before. Question, what is the diameter of that board?

You do a great job explaining and I have made a number of your boards from your book (which is fantastic). Do you know of a formula for determining how much wood is needed for a final board?
Hmm, I might have to give this a try, looks really nice! I am a novice and only have a miter and table saw, no router table or band saw. I'm not sure I could do a round one with that nice lip to it, but maybe start with a rectangle one?
You can do round with your table saw BUT will require you to drill in to your saw. Basically drill a hole at the radius you want. Measuring to the edge of the blade nearest the hole. Put a dowel or bolt in that whole. Then drill a hole center of your board (not all the way through).
Lower your blade completely then place the hole you drilled on the bolt. Turn on the saw and raise you blade just a little bit and spin your board towards the back of the saw. Once you've gone all the way around raise the blade a little bit more and spin again until your all the way through.
I'd suggest using 1/4" bolt and hole so your can glue a dowel into the hole when your done. Even though it's the bottom its nice to have it filled.
There is a lot of "waste" and takes a bit longer, but in the end it will look good. I used to do it this way before I had a router and circle jig. Still don't have a band saw.

Edit note: drill and tap the hole then either come from underneath or use a set screw type bolt and come from the top

awesome board! I was told its dangerous to run end grain threw a planner. I am guessing by all the comments about rounding over the trailing edge fixes chip out while planning end grain means I was lied to?? I use one of those "ridiculous" router sleds with a flattening bit that also allows me to make board larger then my 13" planer can take. Messy but works great. Great video and I think I will check out you book

Fantastic video, did you ever consider routing centered finger grips in the side? I’ve been wanting to but can’t figure out how to get the finger grip to follow the curve rather than a typical flat finger grip. Have you tried or know how?

Hey super job on this video... after making thousands of end grain cutting boards, I found a great solution for planning surfaces...
First take your router with a round over bit and round over your corner edges.
Second send your end grain cutting board through your planning...Taking micro amounts off !!!!
That should do it ! Have fun

A bevel up jack plane with a low angle blade is perfect for flattening endgrain cutting boards. They were originally made to flatten butcher blocks.

David, I purchased your book “Make Your Own Cutting Boards”. Just curious, on the Sushi Board (which I really like) why do you use 3 separate pieces of maple in the center as opposed to one piece 2.25” wide. I assume it has something to do with grain pattern, but I may be wrong. Thanks for your videos and the book. Enjoy both very much.

every butcher block is end grain
all knife throwing clubs use end grain targets naturally (please check out Olga Fedin, a daughter of the famous knife throwing Master Instructor Yuri Fedin, who named his system SKANF. now they alternatively call it NO SPIN)
so I guess long grain cutting boards are for kids, to make crayon drawings on them

If I'm using an oil based finish, do I need to water the board to raise the grain? I did that with my end grain and it warped to all hell
I've never worn steel toed kitchen shoes in my kitchen at home, but if I ever make a board this big I sure as hell will.

To plane my end grain boards I round over the edge slightly first and don’t get any chip out. Don’t recall which TH-cam I picked that up from.

Actually, the whole reason all professional chefs use end-grain boards is because edge grain stays open long after the knife cuts and bacteria can build up quickly, as bits of food can gets prest in the grain, unlike end grain which closes almost instantly after the cut. Also, a sharp knife runs better on end grain for faster cutting and has less chance of sticking.
