Forestry Mulcher day 1: Turning Brush into pasture

  • Brush has taken over the farm. I clear land to rebuild the pasture but find a sink hole which sucks the ASV in. This is trouble. The weight of the head keeps pulling the machine in.

The ASV 75 is a beast! I haven't run one with a mulcher head but definitely on my list. How did it do on fuel? If you can get ahold of some knives for that loftness you would be surprised how much faster it will eat material.

If you like this stuff and think you want to give it a go, search for Cat 299 burning .. there should be a few mulchers in flames out there somewhere. Carry a few fire extinguishers (Halon) and keep her cleaned and blown out and pray for no hydro leaks and that you can lower the mulcher and escape when the time comes. Counterweights on this machine to keep the nose down and help it not get stuck so easily and to lessen wear on the undercarriage components. And teeth not carbides on a mulcher are the trick to getting a lot more work done, and a lot cleaner finish.

@@Dirtmonkey if you start from the top, never tilt the head too far forward, otherwise you might have plenty of stuff being thrown at the cab... and not just there... running it like a mower does make two things tho, first of all lay down all stuff you want to mulch and then make the machine more stable because the heavy attachment is closer to the ground
and don't hurry when driving forwards and backwards... you just overload the mulcher and it gets slowed down too much until it stalls out
the way I have seen several mulcher operators do their clearing was loader arm down and then tilt the head all the way back so the rotor is a few inches off the ground... slowly drive forward to knock down all the vegetation (and on larger trees and brushes push them forward while mulching by tilting the head forward)
and once you got a part knocked down, tilt down far enough to still not hit the ground and drive back slow enough to knock down all the sticks in the ground standing upright, then on the last pass forward get the head actually touch the ground a bit and drive forwards and backwards slowly in the "third pass" to actually "mulch" (and there still don't rush it but take it steady but slowly enough)

Agreed 100%. Depending on terrain, (maintenance vs. reclamation,) one good sawhand, with an hour’s headstart, can “Lay Out” in front of a machine, to the point where the machine is just mowing and mulching. These machines can certainly fell trees, but just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Once you’ve paid for a set of bearings, maybe a set of teeth, and a re-balance, you will understand what these machines are meant to do.

Man, all I can think is that it would be cool to have one of those. There are millions upon millions of acres of the west that need treatment like this, so as to reduce fire risk. I'd personally like to see, as a start, every forest road have something like this done for 50' on either side - that way every road is a decent fire break, hopefully slowing and / or limiting the spread of wild fire until such time as the rest of the forest can get treated. Question for ya: So, now that you ground it all down, would you burn off those areas as well, at least once its safe and able to do so, then re-seed? Or will the pasture come back of it's own? "How Farms Work" has a vid every year it seems where they're knocking back the brush on the edges of their pastures to either keep it in check, or reclaim additional area for forage for their cattle.

Mow it keeping your forestry mulcher head close to the ground is the most efficient & safe. The brush grows back. That is why John of Upstate Brush Control recommends to pull the brush out by the roots first with the excavator. Pile in rows & then forestry mulch the brush. There is still a lot of work to be done to get this back to pasture.

You should use it to push a large tree over as you cut it.

Don't really like the mulchers, I think you are better off getting a shredder/wood chipper and pulling the root system with the brush.
In Missouri a lot of cows and horses break their legs because stumps, stobs from 2" + brush are left after clearing the surface.
After a few years they rot out and leave holes that cows will step in or a horse will be running around and fall into an old stump hole, snaps their leg right in half.
