Hi Wayne. I just wanted to tell you I finished my R2-D2 today. Everything worked first time as yours did. I am so chuffed! I have followed your Channel right from the start. So I collected all 100 issues over 3 years (It took longer in Australia) and built him right along with every one of your episodes all last week up to today (21/01/21). I just want to say THANK-YOU for your wonderful videos. Yoo may not think it's a big deal putting these videos up but this Project actually meant a great deal more to me than just me being a Star Wars Fan. You see, in 2015 I lost everything including my house to a bad business deal. It's taken me 6 years to come back from nothing including buying a new house. This Project (And your company in the videos) helped me a lot with my depression and reclaiming my confidence to make things again. Upon firing up R2-D2 I had the same emotions as I'd watched all your videos even before starting the Project. So I just want to say, thank-you for being a dedicated modeller, for your charm and humour in these videos and (unbeknownst to you) a real companion (mate) as I carefully built each part. Thanks once again for your help with all these videos. Also thanks for getting me messed up by putting together part of the body frame the wrong way and making me double guess myself 😂. After that, I started to follow the books to make sure you were doing things right. I haven't had the chance to connect to the app as of yet since I haven't received my batteries. I was able to test him out with the power adapter. At first he wasn't working the way he's supposed to. Like when you first power him on , he does that little studder. He didn't do that for a while until I finally moved him a in a different direction. I guess I was to close to the sofa that it sensors was detecting it and didn't want to move forward. I have him in the living room, and he now has all the space to move around. Hope to get the batteries this week so I can prime them and put them in. I didn't read the booklet to see all the specs on the batteries so I got the 5000 mah one. It say that it ok as long as it's 3.7 amps. It will just take longer to charge and R2s run time will be longer. That's ok by me. Latter on I'll get the batteries with in the range of what the booklet say. Once again that's for your help.
Mine worked first time, was with you every step of the way Wayne, great tutorials, will miss the monthly builds, so much so that you have inspired me to carry on with the Arduino project, looking forward to that :-)

I just discovered your channel a few weeks ago, it is September 2019. I've watched many of the beginning videos, and boy oh boy, how frustrating getting only a few parts per issue. I had to skip ahead to see the final outcome, and I have to say it was very satisfying! I always wondered how the subscription models work, so thanks for your efforts in this build. I need an R2 unit, so I'll be starting one soon. Be expecting a lot of 👍 from me on all of your builds. Wonderfully entertaining videos.

Looking really nice Wayne, I just finished mine last night was up till 5am n yeah my lightsaber ejector motor died so had to take it all apart n replace it, thank God I bought some spare parts but didn't think they would go out like this even before using the thing. Also I've noticed the sensors don't do too well around chairs. Let the thing loose in my kitchen n kept bumping into the tall chairs and some corners. Hope there's a decent app for diagnostics to check the sensors are all functioning properly and if not we get notified in some way.
I just had to adjust the rack on my lightsaber tube and it worked fine afterwards. Everything else is good and it charged the batteries to full which is good but God I need that app. I need this bad boy to take selfies of me lol
I can see what this meant to you mate - congratulations. It looks good quality. A shame it wasn't to scale with the real thing, but I'm sure that would have been even more expensive, and a lot more difficult to justify the space taken up in the house!
These DeAgostini kit builds look great! I just can’t justify the £££ and I wouldn’t have the patience to wait for every issue!! I’d love to build the R2 and BTTF Delorean!
Hello Wayne, finally remove the head and reconnected the red and white cable and effectively now it works What I can not fix is the opening of arms look and the connection is fine. When I press button 2 or from the app arms r2d2 whistles but does not open arms. The motor does not turn you know what it can be? Do you think it could be the M-C cable that was used as a test? When removing it from the test plate, the cables are straightened a little. thank you very much for your help greetings
love that robot soooooooooo much. even more than the t-800 which is near the top for me. the only thing this needs in my opinion is a cinematic paint job. it basically needs to be aged, dirtied-up and scuffed.
to prime the R2 before turning it on. you have to leave the bottom switch off, connect the charger to the wall and to R2 for a few seconds right? Wasn't sure if it was just to connect to charger without having the AC plug in the wall. Thanks! we have two more left here in America
The head on mine sits too low, I see everyone's R2D2 dome is separated by a milimiter from the body, mine just sits on top of it and rotation got stuck for the same reason... Anyone got an idea what to do? :(
At least it works! I watched all 100 issues. I hope next year I will have my unit finished. Here in Russia I will receive parcel with 46-49 this month.
i started collecting these issues every week and unfortunately had to stop as i couldnt really afford it, looks really really cool, someday i might order the rest and finish building
Hello Wayne, Tim here. I know, this is 3 years on, but as I write, 12 July 2022, I finished the DeAgostini version.. I am now subbed to the FanHome, which I expect is the same. Anyways? MY R2 worked for about 10 minutes, then? I took care of the 18650 Batteries properly...I fly R/C models, so I know about Li-Ion batteries, Ni-Cads, etc. However, NOW R2 will power up, self-test, but do nothing. Any thoughts? BTW, watching the 1960's "Time Machine", you, Lou and "Sprueverse" is it Phil? Anyway, you blokes are great, all around. I know that you, Wayne, visited the USA recently, even came to LA, where I live. Next time I fly over to the UK, perhaps I could look you up? No promise, just a thought. Cheers, mate!
Bloody hell. They've had 100 weeks to get the App sorted and ready to go. How incompetent can you get??? That's worse than me finding out in issue 100 of the Millennium Falcon build that the remote doesn't take bog standard batteries and I'll have to order one before I can use it :/

Would have thought there would be rotor and stator system to facilitate power conduction from the body to the head like there is in a tank turret. This would allow the head to turn round and round without wires getting snagged, stopping the head from turning in the same direction continuously. It's been an interesting build thanks buddy.
Oh I almost forgot to add wayne there is a couple of funny videos on TH-cam called what is R2D2 saying that you should check out please note these are for adult viewing only which will become clear when you see them ☺
Unfortunately, after a year of building mine, then going through the correct start up process, checking, everything was were it should be, NOTHING! Absolutely Nothing. After the waiting another 8 months for a replacement GPU board that came with issue 94, then stripping the R2 down, refitting the new GPU, checking again, making sure that the start process was correct, yes, ZERO, Nothing, Dead, Absolutely Zilch!!! So any ideas Wayne?? I’d be happy to visit anyone who has got there R2 working, otherwise all I have is an expensive model 😤😤☹️☹️😢😭

Hi Wayne. Finished the build, got the batteries, etc and when I went to switch it on, nothing. Do you knwo if there is a guide or way to check all the wiring/boards. Can I disconnect all the wires and reattach them, with the batteries in place to see if the all work?
Im not really a star wars fan but for some reason I have watched every one of your videos for this build, I have to say I've loved every minute of it, I now wish I started this r2d2 build when it was first released. Looking forward to seeing the app video soon. Now where is my delorean 😊

I really would like to know your honest opinion regarding the completed droid. Does it really worth the prize? What is your opinion about the cheap parts and electronics? I'm from Mexico, and here we are on the 29 issue. But I'm thinking carefully if I continue acquiring the next magazines or not. Even though the body is plastic the appearance is up to you. Remember most full size build are either styrene, aluminium or wood. It certainly is heavy so you can feel that is is not just a toy but it could really have done with a remote control rather then an app to link through a phone. When I do the showcase video you will see all the features of the unit. I can't demonstrate them without the app unfortunately but I am happy with the little droid at the end :D
Will you be doing one more video of building the R2 D2 when the APP if ready and running? I hope the APP will still be there when I finally get my issue 100.
So did this take 100 magazine issues to complete? I just looked up the cost of the magazine.... £35?!? Did you really spend £3,500 (£3,996 for the premium subscription) on this partwork? I have to say as someone who used to work as a modelmaker scratchbuilding consumer goods before it all became rapid prototyping it is a nice piece.
Hey Wayne, very nice job, it looks good. I'm a bit sad to hear that some of the lights don't come on and camera will not work unless you have that stupid ap. thing. what if your phone can't down load aps.? you got to go buy a new phone? And when it comes out you have to pay to use it? I don't think so. If there is a way to at least make the light and camera work I would keep building this thing, but right now, I am thinking of canceling it and selling the parts. disappointing.
Loved watching all your video's, I followed issue 100 step by step, everything worked as it should till I pressed button one, it goes backwards not forwards. I wonder if there is a trouble shoot page somewhere ?
The lightsaber isn't quite right... Going by what we actually see IN THE FILM ROTJ, it didn't have the nipple in the center of it. The HERO version of the lightsaber DID but not the version of the saber (the Stunt; there were at least 3 versions of the "Luke" hilt in the movie) catapulted by R2. You see that at least one hilt (or another; not necessarily the stunt blade R2 threw) DOESN'T have that nipple (flat emitter head like Obi-Wan's lightsaber in the first Star Wars movie) in it, either, as Luke climbs the side of Jabba's sail barge.

Yes it is very cool 😎 & I love that it comes with a real half Scale Luke’s light saber nice BUT! There is no reason for all the lights not to work from the start you should not have to wait for an app to make all the lights work & let me tell you why ,,,,,,what happens if u never get the app or the app gets discontinued not your stuck with a R2D2 that has only half his lights working just like you are now & then ull have to find a way to hack the lights to get them to come on but they may not strobe in and out properly How could they go to all this work but leave out the last 2 lights lol sorry that just seems wrong after you’ve spent so much money
Cant believe the App is not ready. Very unprofessional on their end. But on the good side. At least we have something else to look forward to yet again.
Aye. Theoretically it takes 5 days to 2 weeks for the app to be propagated to the app store and it can take 5 days every time they do an update. This could drag out a bit I think.
It sounds like a plug is in the wrong way. As I have suggested to others, disconnect everything , check all pins in mcu then plug back in ensuring the line down the side if the connectors match the slot in the male plugs of the Mcu

Hello World of Wayne. Another excellent video, lucky you with it working first time. I hope that either you, or anyone else can help me. After the initial power up I get the initial judder and red light comes on at front and amber at back, however the dome is not turning. When I power up after that it just turns in a circle. I know I must have something wrong with motor but I don't want to be taking apart just now until I know what or where to check. Any help would be much appreciated, or any links or pointers to other sites. I have trawled DeAgostini website but once again about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. Thanks @@@WorldofWayneUK , I have kind of guessed that. I'm just disappointed in DeAgostini that there is no FAQ's or troubleshooting section. The fact that one of the legs doesn't work concerns me, I really don't want to have to dismantle and re-assemble the whole leg. If anyone knows of any troubleshooting sites or FAQ's please let me know.

I remember seeing these magazine as a kid, must be pretty old. More that 10 years ago.

Hello Wayne, Tim here. I know, this is 3 years on, but as I write, 12 July 2022, I finished the DeAgostini version.. I am now subbed to the FanHome, which I expect is the same. Anyways? MY R2 worked for about 10 minutes, then? I took care of the 18650 Batteries properly...I fly R/C models, so I know about Li-Ion batteries, Ni-Cads, etc. However, NOW R2 will power up, self-test, but do nothing. Any thoughts? BTW, watching the 1960's "Time Machine", you, Lou and "Sprueverse" is it Phil? Anyway, you blokes are great, all around. I know that you, Wayne, visited the USA recently, even came to LA, where I live. Next time I fly over to the UK, perhaps I could look you up? No promise, just a thought. Cheers, mate!

My issue is in Argos waiting to be picked up on my way home from work. Then locking myself in the garage tonight to complete him.
Bloody hell. They've had 100 weeks to get the App sorted and ready to go. How incompetent can you get??? That's worse than me finding out in issue 100 of the Millennium Falcon build that the remote doesn't take bog standard batteries and I'll have to order one before I can use it :/

Would have thought there would be rotor and stator system to facilitate power conduction from the body to the head like there is in a tank turret. This would allow the head to turn round and round without wires getting snagged, stopping the head from turning in the same direction continuously. It's been an interesting build thanks buddy.
It is interesting but the Y shaped stop in the dome stops it going to far around.

Unfortunately, after a year of building mine, then going through the correct start up process, checking, everything was were it should be, NOTHING! Absolutely Nothing. After the waiting another 8 months for a replacement GPU board that came with issue 94, then stripping the R2 down, refitting the new GPU, checking again, making sure that the start process was correct, yes, ZERO, Nothing, Dead, Absolutely Zilch!!! So any ideas Wayne?? I’d be happy to visit anyone who has got there R2 working, otherwise all I have is an expensive model 😤😤☹️☹️😢😭

Hi Wayne. Finished the build, got the batteries, etc and when I went to switch it on, nothing. Do you knwo if there is a guide or way to check all the wiring/boards. Can I disconnect all the wires and reattach them, with the batteries in place to see if the all work?
I think the first thing to check us the power output from the battery pack and how it behaves when the charging cable is in
Im not really a star wars fan but for some reason I have watched every one of your videos for this build, I have to say I've loved every minute of it, I now wish I started this r2d2 build when it was first released.

I really would like to know your honest opinion regarding the completed droid. Does it really worth the prize? What is your opinion about the cheap parts and electronics? Even though the body is plastic the appearance is up to you. Remember most full size build are either styrene, aluminium or wood. It certainly is heavy so you can feel that is is not just a toy but it could really have done with a remote control rather then an app to link through a phone. When I do the showcase video you will see all the features of the unit. I can't demonstrate them without the app unfortunately but I am happy with the little droid at the end :D

So did this take 100 magazine issues to complete? I just looked up the cost of the magazine.... £35?!? Did you really spend £3,500 (£3,996 for the premium subscription) on this partwork? I have to say as someone who used to work as a modelmaker scratchbuilding consumer goods before it all became rapid prototyping it is a nice piece.
No £35 is every 4 weeks. The mag is €8.99 so it's about £899 complete. Slightly less as the first issue was £1.99

Hey Wayne, very nice job, it looks good. I'm a bit sad to hear that some of the lights don't come on and camera will not work unless you have that stupid ap. thing. what if your phone can't down load aps.? you got to go buy a new phone? And when it comes out you have to pay to use it? I don't think so. If there is a way to at least make the light and camera work I would keep building this thing, but right now, I am thinking of canceling it and selling the parts. disappointing.

Loved watching all your video's, I followed issue 100 step by step, everything worked as it should till I pressed button one, it goes backwards not forwards. I wonder if there is a trouble shoot page somewhere ?
The lightsaber isn't quite right...
Going by what we actually see IN THE FILM ROTJ, it didn't have the nipple in the center of it.
The HERO version of the lightsaber DID but not the version of the saber (the Stunt; there were at least 3 versions of the "Luke" hilt in the movie) catapulted by R2. You see that at least one hilt (or another; not necessarily the stunt blade R2 threw) DOESN'T have that nipple (flat emitter head like Obi-Wan's lightsaber in the first Star Wars movie) in it, either, as Luke climbs the side of Jabba's sail barge.

Yes it is very cool 😎 & I love that it comes with a real half Scale Luke’s light saber nice BUT! There is no reason for all the lights not to work from the start you should not have to wait for an app to make all the lights work & let me tell you why ,,,,,,what happens if u never get the app or the app gets discontinued not your stuck with a R2D2 that has only half his lights working just like you are now & then ull have to find a way to hack the lights to get them to come on but they may not strobe in and out properly How could they go to all this work but leave out the last 2 lights lol sorry that just seems wrong after you’ve spent so much money

Cant believe the App is not ready. Very unprofessional on their end. But on the good side. At least we have something else to look forward to yet again.
Aye. Theoretically it takes 5 days to 2 weeks for the app to be propagated to the app store and it can take 5 days every time they do an update. This could drag out a bit I think.
HI WAYNE FINALY PUT TOGEATHER ,GOT A PROBLEM ,ON START UPTHE HEAD DOES NOT TURN AND ALL LIGHT FRONT AND BACK LIGHTS FLASH ANY SURGEST.
It sounds like a plug is in the wrong way. As I have suggested to others, disconnect everything , check all pins in mcu then plug back in ensuring the line down the side if the connectors match the slot in the male plugs of the Mcu
have tryed what you have surgested but with no luck 3x infact,have noted if l put the charger on and push button 6 it will got though the start up.

Hello World of Wayne. Another excellent video, lucky you with it working first time.
I hope that either you, or anyone else can help me. After the initial power up I get the initial judder and red light comes on at front and amber at back, however the dome is not turning. When I power up after that it just turns in a circle.
I know I must have something wrong with motor but I don't want to be taking apart just now until I know what or where to check.
Any help would be much appreciated, or any links or pointers to other sites.
I have trawled DeAgostini website but once again about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike.

It really sounds like a connection issue rather then a board issue.
Thanks @@@WorldofWayneUK , I have kind of guessed that. I'm just disappointed in DeAgostini that there is no FAQ's or troubleshooting section. The fact that one of the legs doesn't work concerns me, I really don't want to have to dismantle and re-assemble the whole leg.
If anyone knows of any troubleshooting sites or FAQ's please let me know.
